irc.blackened.com was the biggest IRC server in the world, and it ran off of a 486. But it had a buttload of RAM. It can _easily_ take that much - >especially Unreal3.1, which is delayed to 14th-16th atm :P Hehehehe, now that is good. Just make sure your servers can handle the number of TCP sockets required. I notice that in the Linux world the concept of "minimum system requirements" is almost a moot concept - after all I have a 25MHz 486 with 'only' 28Mb RAM acting as an extremely functional server, with quite decent performance, for the bunch of about 10 computers that myself and my flatmate own. It has even run Unreal and IRC Services in the past (with an almost zero user-count, and it took a few seconds to establish a connection with it, but it worked fine). I wouldn't even consider trying to run Windoze NT on that system, let alone any kind of server on top. The high performance under amazingly heavy load (thanks for the example) using up-to-date hardware is simply the result of combined scalability and efficiency. irc.superonline.com, 5500 users. Works fine and isnt incredibly lagged. I tried making a network with 250.000 users yesterday. Used 100 MB ram and had a process loop on 14.7% CPU. It can _easily_ take that much - especially Unreal3.1, which is delayed to 14th-16th atm :P --------------------------------------------------------------------- Carsten V. Looks like your machine doesn't have a DNS hostname. If you're on a LAN, this is unavoidable unless you set up a DNS server on that LAN and have your IRC server reference that. -------------------------------------------------------------- from: Jonathan "Chromatix" Morton mail: ch...@cy... I have got Unreal IRCd working perfectly, but when the daemon performs a host name lookup on a machine it waits for ages then says -nightfever- *** Received identd response - -nightfever- *** Couldn't resolve your hostname; using your IP address instead - -192.168.1.3- *** If you are having problems connecting due to ping timeouts, please type /notice 22FC215D nospoof now. How would I go about setting up a crontab for Unreal? I got crontab working fine with our eggdrop but when the box reboots, Unreal does not automatically restart. All I can find on the Web is information for setting up crontab tasks for automatically mailing logs and suchlike. ----------------------------------------------- FREE!
