Another follow-up: I tested on my son's Windows 10 laptop, and when using the scrollwheel (on his physical, external mouse), the selector (brushes, magic tools were what I tested) does not scroll properly. It seems to jump immediately, and get basically stuck at, the bottom. I have been unable to replicate this on Linux, however! I confirmed that the scroll wheel acts as intended when using the New dialog, and in other apps (e.g. a web browser), so it doesn't appear to be a driver or hardware malfunction, but specific to that bit of code in Tux Paint. I'll investigate. Can others out here with physical mice (or trackpads that offer scroll functionality) please give it a try, and see whether it's acting incorrectly for you as well? Thanks! -bill! Quick follow-up: The Android version (at least on my Pixel 7 phone) is not showing the new "Kaleido-..." Magic tools. I'll post a follow-up once we get that sorted. -bill! Tux Paint 0.9.28 has been rebuilt as 0.9.28-3 for Red Hat Linux, too. (For EL7, EL8, and EL9; the SDL2.0 variation of Tux Paint. Note: SDL2_Pango has also been updated.) Learn about Shin-ichi's repository, or directly download the RPM package files, at: https://tuxpaint.org/download/linux-rpm/ Tux Paint 0.9.28 is also being updated in Fedora Linux (now at 0.9.28-4). Learn more at: https://tuxpaint.org/download/linux-fedora/ Similar to the Windows and Android builds late last month, these updates apply a patch to mend a crash bug affecting the Fill tool's 'Brush' or 'Radial' modes if you drew off the canvas. Thanks to Shin-ichi TOYAMA here in our project, and Gwyn Ciesla from The Fedora Project, for these builds! -bill! |

Tux Paint 0.9.28 has been rebuilt for Android as well. It's available in F-Droid, and as a direct ".apk" download. Lean more here: https://tuxpaint.org/download/android/ As with the Windows builds the other day, this applies two patches: one mends a crash bug affecting the Fill tool's 'Brush' mode; if you drew off the canvas, it could crash; the other addresses jaggedness that can occur when running Tux Paint in fullscreen mode. Thanks to Pere Pujal i Carabantes for handling this. -bill! |

We actually discovered this recently, and Tux Paint 0.9.28-3 for Windows (and coming soon for Android) addresses this bug. Issue reproduces stably, though I'm not 100% clear the minimal step. 1. open a new blank board(white background) 2. select floodfill on the left, and Brush on the top right. 3. select color 1(e.g. black), 4. move mouse rapidly, randomly, as if trying to fill the erea 5. select another color(e.g. red), redo step 4 6. redo step 3~5 in about 1 or 2 minutes, tuxpaint freezes and crashes. version 0.9.28, os win11 x64 |

Tux Paint 0.9.28 for Windows (both 32-bit i686, and 64-bit x86_64; both installer .EXE and portable .ZIP flavors) has bene rebuilt as 0.9.28-3 by project volunteer Shin-ichi TOYAMA. This applies two patches: one mends a crash bug affecting the Fill tool's 'Brush' mode; if you drew off the canvas, it could crash; the other addresses jaggedness that can occur when running Tux Paint in fullscreen mode. You can download them from: * Installer EXE: https://tuxpaint.org/download/windows/ * Portable ZIP: https://tuxpaint.org/download/windows-zip/ I'm hoping project volunteer Pere Pujal i Carabantes can apply the crash-fix patch and rebuild the Android version soon, as well. (I confirmed it crashes on my Pixel 7 running Android 13.) Enjoy, and happy holidays! -- -bill! Sent from my computer |

Done! (And thanks for mentioning that I misplaced the issue under 'macOS' on the Known Issues page -- I always work on this project far too late at night!) Hi! According to the Apache log, only one person has downloaded the test build so far, and no report has come. # This makes me a little bit disappointing to me though. Anyway, as far as I can confirm on my PC and some Virtual Machines, the symptoms reported this time occur always and only when running the x86_64 version on "Windows 11 22H2". I could not pinpoint the cause of the problem as there are many updates in the latest build environment, including the compiler, but considering that the application of 22H2 are going to be phased in, I think it would be better to release the new builds of the x86_64 version and mention it on the "Known Issues" page as well. Thanks. Shin-ichi of our project was able to reproduce this issue, and by rebuilding Tux Paint 0.9.28 seems to have addressed it. However, it'd be helpful if people could test this, especially if you're observing the issue with the version of 0.9.28 built in June. EXE installer and ZIP 'portable' versions, each for both 64-bit (x86_64) and 32-bit (i686) systems, have been posted to his site: https://z1.plala.jp/tuxpaint/testing/windows/0.9.28-2/ Below is his most recent post to the 'tuxpaint-users' mailing list: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hi! Three people have reported issues typing some characters (i, j, and s) in Tux Paint's Text tool. One opened, and another commented on, ticket #264 over on our SourceForge project. Another emailed me directly, but didn't provide detail of their system, Tux Paint version, etc. (I asked, but they haven't responded yet.) Has anyone else out here seen this behavior? I cannot reproduce it under Linux. Pere tried under Windows 10 and cannot, either. The person who commented on the ticket mentioned that it seemed to begin after a Microsoft Update to her Windows 11 laptop. With what seems to be an imminent collapse of the Twitter platform (which is sad, because it's been pretty rewarding and there's been high engagement, despite having about 1/15th the number of followers as our Facebook page!), I've been adding accounts to represent the Tux Paint project on more social media platforms. The Facebook page has been around the longest (and has accumulated over 19,000 'fans'): https://www.facebook.com/TuxPaint The Twitter account has been around for about 4.5 years (with over 1,100 followers): https://twitter.com/TuxPaintTweets We have an account on Tumblr, which I believe has been around less than a year, but I can't recall (and they make it hard to tell!) https://www.tumblr.com/tuxpaint I created a user account on Reddit, and promptly forgot about it, but am trying to revive it: https://www.reddit.com/user/TuxPaintDevs/ I've finally looked into Mastodon (which is the most similar to Twitter; a microblogging platform, though it's federated rather than centralized): https://floss.social/@tuxpaint And I just hopped on Instagram, which appears to be the most difficult platform to use, since it's photo- and video-oriented. (It looks liek can't simply say "A new version is available, go download it!", I need to upload an image to go along with it. Thank goodness Tux Paint is art software! :-) ) https://www.instagram.com/tuxpaintdevs/ What you'll mostly see on these accounts are newly-added gallery images by people who have submitted them to me directly, or that I found on one of the sites, and asked permission to share. On Twitter, Tumblr, and (presumably) Mastodon, you'll also see us reposting things that are relevant (hopefully!) to our audience: so things about art, other art software (especially open source), other educational software, etc. Twitter made these kinds of interactions very easy; most of the other platforms don't seem to be designed for that kind of 'hobnobbing', and I feel a lot more like I'm shouting into a void. (Even on Tumblr, when I ask a artists whether I can share drawings they've made on Tux Paint, it seems like the majority of the time I never even hear back.) Anyway, if you feel like following the Tux Paint project on any of these social media platforms, please do! But if not, you'll hear from us here on this 'tuxpaint-users' mailing list. The website is of course always updated whenever anything new is released. (And gallery artwork is being added constantly! https://tuxpaint.org/gallery) Take care! Hi! I created dnf/yum repositry for RHEL7,8 and 9, which significantly make it easy to install binary packages of tuxpaint family. For RHEL7: http://z1.plala.jp/tuxpaint/el7/repo/ For RHEL8: http://z1.plala.jp/tuxpaint/el8/repo/ For RHEL9: http://z1.plala.jp/tuxpaint/el9/repo/ Now, you can install the latest SDL2 based tuxpaint, tuxpaint-config and all the stamps as follows: EL7: sudo yum install http://z1.plala.jp/tuxpaint/el7/repo/tuxpaint-release-7-1.el7.noarch.rpm sudo yum install tuxpaint-0.9.28 sudo yum install tuxpaint-config sudo yum install tuxpaint-stamps-* EL8: sudo dnf install http://z1.plala.jp/tuxpaint/el8/repo/tuxpaint-release-8-1.el8.noarch.rpm sudo dnf --enablerepo=powertools install tuxpaint sudo dnf install tuxpaint-config sudo dnf install tuxpaint-stamps-* EL9: sudo dnf install http://z1.plala.jp/tuxpaint/el9/repo/tuxpaint-release-9-1.el9.noarch.rpm sudo dnf install tuxpaint sudo dnf install tuxpaint-config sudo dnf install tuxpaint-stamps-* Please give it a try, if you like. Hi Tuxpaint users, My 3 years old daugter likes this app very much, and especially open the default templates(starters) and do floodfill with different colors, such as TuxPaint\data\starters\jigsaw_5x5.png. But there are only several templates by default. Where can I find more interesting starters like the 'stamps'? I've read some document such as 'Coloring-Book Style Starters' section of https://tuxpaint.org/docs/en/html/EXTENDING.html. But randomly downloaded file isn't as suitable and well designed as the default ones. Is there collection made by the community to download and install? Best Regards, Yang |

Hi Tuxpaint users, My 3 years old daugter likes this app very much, and especially open the default templates and do floodfill with different colors. But there are only several templates by default. I'm not meaning the stamps, i mean default tempates of various shapes with only white-black solid edges, such as TuxPaint\data\starters\jigsaw_5x5.png. I've tried download random image online and put to TuxPaint\data\starters, but opening that file gives me error. I thought those files are specially designed with some fixed size at least, but if there are some default templates like those stamps, it will be very helpful! Best Regards, Yang |

Karl posted these two bugs over on SourceForge: * Two directional brushes don't work when using black colour https://sourceforge.net/p/tuxpaint/bugs/253/ * Tux Paint window dont refresh when alt-tabbed into https://sourceforge.net/p/tuxpaint/bugs/254/ I am unable to reproduce either bug on my Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS system running Tux Paint 'master' branch with SDL 1.2.15, or 'sdl2.0' branch with SDL 2.0.10, under X-Window X.Org 1.20.13. Karl reports that the Alt+Tab issue happens with X11 and SDL 1.2.50, but not under Wayland, nor under SDL 2.0. The SDL 2.0 version of Tux Paint does not exhibit the brush-drawing issue Karl reported. The brushes in question are rotating ones, so I thought perhaps it was an issue of the brush not wanting to draw anything on a simple click+release, at least under larger brush spacing, as the brushes want to know what direction to "face", based on mouse motion. However, Karl confirms the issue happens all the time, and even with the Lines tool (not just the Paint [brush] tool). Since they are rotating, they use some SDL and SDL_gfx routines to manage rotation (rotozoom). Based on my inability to reproduce under either SDL 1.2.15 or SDL 2.0.10 under X11, and Karl only reproducing the issues under SDL 1.2.50 (and one of the confirmed to happen only under X), my _hunch_ is there may be some bug in some versions of SDL 1.2, and/or Tux Paint is doing something naively that causes the problems to occur (especially with regards to the brush issue). Can others here please let us know if you come across either issue, and report back what version(s) of Tux Paint & SDL you're using. You can run "tuxpaint --verbose-version" for that. And let us know whether you're seeing the issues on X-Window and/or Wayland, and what version(s) of those you're using. (I've admittedly not used Wayland yet; for X-Window, I run "xdpyinfo | grep version" to get its version info.) Thanks in advance! -- -bill! Sent from my computer |

Many years ago, a bug was reported about Tux Paint which appeared to be an issue with SDL1.2, where Windows users with touchscreens noticed that every tap in Tux Paint appeared to occur only after another tap was made. So for example, tapping the red color did nothing. But if you tapped blue, red would be selected. Then if you tapped the canvas to draw a dot, the blue color would be selected. Tap somewhere else, and you get a blue dot in the previous spot. And so on. Tux Paint was always one step behind! (This is bug #160) If you have a Windows tablet or a PC with a touchscreen, could you please test out Tux Paint 0.9.28 and let us know whether things are working better now? # Announcing Tux Paint version 0.9.28 The Tux Paint development team is happy to announce version 0.9.28 of their popular drawing software for children. This release marks the 20th anniversary of the project. A historical retrospective of Tux Paint was published in May. <https://tuxpaint.org/history/> ## More Color Choices Tux Paint's Color palette includes a new Color Mixer option, which allows users to combine different proportions of primary colors (red, yellow, and blue) and shades (white, grey, and black) to create new colors, similar to mixing paints. The Color Picker option, which previously offered a static palette of around sixty-five thousand color choices, now supports separate hue, saturation, and value settings, allowing users to choose from over sixteen million colors. Also, a keyboard shortcut is now available for quick access to the Color Selector -- the "pipette" tool used for picking colors from the current drawing. ## Updated Drawing Tools The Paint and Lines tools now provide a way to adjust the spacing of brushes, allowing dotted lines or smearing effects to be made. Many brushes have been given better default spacing values, as well. Two new variations of the Zoom Magic Tool, Tile Zoom and Rush, have been added. When shrinking a drawing with Tile Zoom, it replicates the drawing across the canvas in tiles, rather than filling the canvas with a solid background color. The Rush tool blurs the results. Tux Paint's Shapes tool now offers hexagon (6-sided) and heptagon (7-sided) polygons. For shapes which can be stretched (rectangle, oval, etc.), the aspect ratio of the shape is displayed at the bottom while you make your adjustments. Instructional information shown while using some other tools has also been expanded. ## Other Improvements Keyboard shortcuts, such as [Control]+[S] to save a drawing, are now accessed with the more traditional [Command] key when using Tux Paint on macOS. Sizing of Tux Paint's built-in on-screen keyboard has been improved. The look and feel of the user documentation has been improved. Finally, various other improvements, bug fixes, and localization updates were also made. For a complete list of changes, see the project's various change logs: * Tux Paint change log https://tuxpaint.org/docs/CHANGES.txt * Tux Paint Config. change log https://tuxpaint.org/docs/tuxpaint-config-CHANGES.txt * Tux Paint Stamps change log https://tuxpaint.org/docs/tuxpaint-stamps-CHANGES.txt ## More Artwork Examples Over 100 new drawings have been added to the online Tux Paint Gallery <https://tuxpaint.org/gallery/> in recent months. In May, a music video created using Tux Paint and Blender 3D animation software was published on YouTube: "all out of riddles" by Flying Squid (video by GabeTYJ). <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5a_WZgj8VY> ## A Free Download Tux Paint is available for download, free of charge, from the project's website: https://tuxpaint.org/. Tux Paint is open source software and does not contain in-app advertising. Version 0.9.28 is currently available for Microsoft Windows, Apple macOS, and as source code. Android and Linux packages are forthcoming. https://tuxpaint.org/download/ The text above was taken from our full press release: https://tuxpaint.org/latest/tuxpaint-0.9.28-press-release.php This version of Tux Paint was made possible by: Pere Pujal i Carabantes, Bill Kendrick, Mark Kim, & TOYAMA Shin-ichi; with localization updates by Besnik Bleta, Hugo Carvalho, Sveinn í Felli, Prasanta Hembram, & Jozef Říha.
