I can roll a 0.9.18b source tarball once you and/or John commit any changes required for your binary builds, after the initial 0.9.18 source release happens. I would have liked for it to all go more smoothly, but... hey, this is a completely volunteer-driven project, so it's to be expected. (And, btw, despite all of my urging and stressing, I do want to thank everyone for the incredible work they've been putting in!) -bill! |

Hi Albert, >From my point of view, don't wait for me to submit your changes. I committed some Mac-related changes to CVS last night, and from this point onward, most problems I need to resolve are build related, and should only affect the files in the macosx directory. I'm working in my own local sandbox of Tux Paint files, so I'm not concerned about new changes that are added to CVS. Out of curiosity, what kind of changes will you be making to Tux Paint? Will they be XO-specific (via #ifdef, for example), or broader changes? I'd like to add some fixed-point math support to the Magic API at some point, but it'd probably be best if I used some existing library for that, rather than try to roll my own. Anyone have recommendations? (The best would be something that could somehow be compiled using floating-point for systems with FPUs, and compiled as fixed-point for systems that don't (Nokia, Zaurus, etc.)) > BTW, I'm not so sure pre-XP is anything these days. > If nothing else, the hardware itself will have died. Heh, yeah. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that many schools are still running older stuff these days. (When I was in high school, we had nothing but Apple IIe systems, aside from the random Mac, until 1992! I have no idea how soon the lab full of 486es running Windows 3.1 was replaced when Win95 came out...) -- -bill! bi...@ne... http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/ |

FYI ,I added a 'stopsound()' call to the Magic tool plugins API today. (Some sounds created for some of the more recently-added effects were a bit long, and it made sense to end them abruptly when the user releases the mouse button.) Thanks! -- -bill! bi...@ne... http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/ |

I plan on releasing a source tarball of Tux Paint 0.9.18 this week. John P. will be able to create a build for Windows XP, 2000 and Vista (with Win95, 98 and ME to follow later on). I'm guessing Martin F. will be making a Universal Mac OS X a little after the initial release, as well. Shin-Ichi is no doubt ready to roll Fedora RPMs immediately. John Popplewell and Shin-Ichi TOYAMA have each put together builds of what will become Tux Paint 0.9.18. For those of you interested in beta-testing, please try them out and let us know if you have any problems or other comments! Builds for Windows (both "installer" and "zip archive" flavros) are available here: ftp://ftp.tuxpaint.org/unix/x/tuxpaint/testbuilds/win32/ They include Tux Paint and Tux Paint Config. RPM packages for Fedora CORE 2 thru Fedora 7 (for x86-compatible platforms) are also available. Tux Paint itself: ftp://ftp.tuxpaint.org/unix/x/tuxpaint/testbuilds/rpm/tuxpaint/ and Tux Paint Config.: ftp://ftp.tuxpaint.org/unix/x/tuxpaint/testbuilds/rpm/tuxpaint-config/ Enjoy! -- -bill! bi...@ne... http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/ |

I've got a fully documented Win2K/XP build with Pango, Cairo etc. working. I will get a beta version out this weekend - hangover permitting :-) There's just a couple of extra build steps required related to gathering the default settings and modules for fontconfig, GTK+ and Pango. Win9x/ME is going to be a separate build with different versions of Glib and the others (if there's any point trying). Not sure yet what isn't going to work - I don't think Cairo works on Win9x/ME (at all) and I suspect Pango uses Cairo as a backend. Also, librsvg uses Cairo so I think the Win9x/ME port is probably stuck with the libsvg partial implementation. But I could be wrong. There is a massive chain of dependencies and I've not really been worrying about the Win9x/ME port, regards, John. > Bill Kendrick wrote in <200...@so...> > > > >Martin says he'll need until the end of next week to get things > >straightened out on the OS X side (including updating XCode stuff for the > >new libs we're using, providing some notes on building "Magic" plug-in tools, > >and getting some help building some libs for Intel Macs). > > > >John P., do you think you'll need any longer than that, at this rate, to get > >the Win32 stuff going? > > > >Anyone else out here need more time to prepare for the next release? > >(Shin-Ichi, Ben, etc.?) > > > >If we're good, that'll mean a new release some time in the week of > >November 19th! > > > >-- > >-bill! > >bi...@ne... > >http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/ > > > >------------------------------------------------------------------------- > >This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc. > >Still grepping through log files to find problems? Hi! I think we should have some time to check binary build for each platforms before next release, because, as I already e-maild you, there still remains rendering problem with SDL_ttf (nopango). Martin says he'll need until the end of next week to get things straightened out on the OS X side (including updating XCode stuff for the new libs we're using, providing some notes on building "Magic" plug-in tools, and getting some help building some libs for Intel Macs). John P., do you think you'll need any longer than that, at this rate, to get the Win32 stuff going? Anyone else out here need more time to prepare for the next release? (Shin-Ichi, Ben, etc.?) If we're good, that'll mean a new release some time in the week of November 19th! -- -bill! bi...@ne... http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/ |

So the libhid folks suggested, based on how simple the device's Usage tree was, that using libusb directly would be simpler. Unfortunately, no luck so far. I can connect to it (though with libusb, I haven't convinced the kernel to detatch from the device, like libhid was doing for me -- currently, I need to first run 'libhid-detatch-device' or somesuch, until I reboot or unplug/plugin the tablet). I haven't figured out how to read data from it, in either interrupt, bulk or control modes. :^( I'll be on #tux4kids IRC channel on irc.freenode.net tomorrow morning (11/8) from ~7:15am until ~10am (my Amtrak ride :^) ), with the device, and probably some time to try and debug, if anyone wants to help! :) -- -bill! bi...@ne... http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/ |

Well, it crashes tuxpaint because it installs 39 ttf fonts at a time. Installing some other font packages that has less number of fonts doesnt crash tuxpaint until they reach a limit. I can reproduce crashing without ttf-arabeyes, just by putting an apropiate number of fonts in the .tuxpaint/fonts directory The maximum number of fonts that tuxpaint allows on my box without crashing is 127 in case if it helps. (BTW xfontsel shows about 32000 installed fonts , but tuxpaint just show up to 127 fonts) Hope this helps Yours Pere |

Wacom tablets should be backwards-compatible with the standard mice. I have a serial-port Wacom tablet that I could just plug in and use with X (just configure X so it points to the device as a mouse pointer with an "appropriate mouse type" specified as the pointer type.) - I just unplugged my existing serial mouse, plugged in the wacom tablet, and there I went without any extra drivers or configuring or nothin'. Wacom also supports tilt and pressure sensitivity. I got that to work within an Wacom-aware proof-of-concept paint application written by one of the Gimp developers, if I recall correctly. I think there was also some sort of Wacom driver involved, I don't remember - It's been really long. I can dig around if you need that info. In any case, if it's Wacom-compatible then you should be able to get it working like a standard mouse pretty easy provided there's a compatible USB mouse device you can specify. > We know a driver is attaching to it, we just don't know any more.. Looks like it's just a raw HID device driver to me from the messages. I would've hoped it would possibly create two devices if the system really understood what it was, one device for mouse-compatible input and another for extra data like pressure sensitivity. Perhaps the USB HID protocol allows both mouse-compatible events and extra data events to occur in a single USB HID stream. Eh. Whatever. Try it and find out. -Mark |
