Let me welcome you too into our ranks ;) I'll do my utter best to aid you in any way I can (mind you ... I can be a pain at times - just have to ask the ZETA dev's) ;) <jk> I'd like to welcome also the other students that made it into GSoC, I'm looking forward to see your code and how it reacts in regards to BeOS and the ability to be 'portable'. If not being 'portable' I'm looking forward to see how it can be setup to be used without breaking the port that we have at the moment. Anyway .. happy coding summer all! Hi people, my name is Bruno (bdilly on IRC). I'm a computer engineer (concluded my degree an year ago) from Brazil. Now I'm enrolled in my master's degree. I will work on my GSoC proposal in the next months, adding support for system file dialogs, mentored by Luc Schrijvers: http://code.google.com/soc/2008/tux4kids/appinfo.html?csaid=1BD352C2345DE145 I've got a blog to post news about my work: http://bdilly.livejournal.com/ Congratulations to all accepted students. As you all probably know, Tux4Kids (the loose-knit umbrella over Tux Paint, TuxMath and Tux Typing II) signed up to participate as a 'mentoring organization' in this year's Google Summer of Code program. (This is our first year participating.) http://code.google.com/soc/ Over 7000 students applied this year, and Google is able to fund just over 1100 of them. (Each student and mentoring org receives a cash stipend upon successful completion of their project for the org. USD$4500 to the student, and $500 to the mentoring org, if I recall correctly.) Tux4Kids received over 130 applications from 90 students around the world, and were allocated 10 slots (we had exactly that many mentors, in the end). Out of the 130, many were excellent proposals, but in the end we had to choose just 10 applications. Five of the mentors were interested in mentoring Tux Paint-related work, and here are the proposals we chose, in no particular order: * Create new Magic tools Student: Andrew Corcoran Mentor: Caroline Ford * Language learning aid for pre-school/dyslexic kids (using Orton-Gillingham method of learning) Student: Namrata Nehete Mentor: Me (Bill Kendrick) * Selection Tools Student: Reilly Watson Mentor: Martin Fuhrer * Support for system file dialogs Student: Bruno Dilly (who has already merged Open/New/Slideshow code) Mentor: Luc Schrijvers * Text Manipulation Student: Arunodai Reddy Vudem Mentor: Mark K. Kim You can see the rest, and read the application abstracts, here: http://code.google.com/soc/2008/tux4kids/about.html And here's an announcement about the accepted student proposals for all of GSoC 2008: http://google-opensource.blogspot.com/2008/04/announcing-accepted-student-proposals.html Expect to see these students, and perhaps many more whose applications we decided not to accept, appearing on the 'tuxpaint-devel' mailing list soon! PS - We also had some very close runners-up for Tux Paint, including (but not limited to!): Joseph Austin (selection tools), Soha Hassan (selection tools) Rosoiu Ionut (text tool improvements), Adam Rakowski (Magic tools), Kamran Riaz Khan (system-integration improvements), Christian Schultz (selection tools), and Jason Ward (file dialogs & selection tools) (and who patched a bug in the direction brush with Line tool) Thanks, all! -- -bill! bi...@ne... http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/ |

Hi there,
same problem wiht the case sensitive problem in ZETA(BeOS), aside from
that, quite some parse errors (gcc 2.95.3) in a few files, after I added
the {} the compiles goes ahead but when it finishes it doesn't seem to
compile the binarie (maybe it stops somewhere but I don't have any real
output in the Terminal).

Dear Mr. Mark
Thank you very much for your feedback. I just want to make clear
somethings about the poor presentation of my source code.
First of all, the project i have done is only a part of my computer
graphics subject and is expected to be a mini project. As i have started it
off late, i was made to rush up in coding as i did not have much time for
submitting the project. So, i was not able to comment my source code
completely, though i have commented my source code to some extent for my
ease of understanding and organizing the project.
Regarding the over commenting of my code that i have submitted is only
because of my intention to convey the method of implementation of my
project.
Regarding the indentations: I have a programming experience of 4 years,
i know the the way one have to indent the code and i know how important they
are for any code.I am shocked to hear about the poor indentations in my
code. I have indented my code properly. But unfortunately, they are not
proper in the copy i have sent you. As i am currently having my final exams,
i have commented my code and asked my friend to check it for any mistakes in
commenting. As he is unaware of the indentations, has mistakenly edited the
code while trying to correct the comments in my code. This way the
indentations went wrong in the copy i have sent you.
Regarding header files, i am quite aware of the things a header file
should contain. But i have not worked much with header files earlier so that
created a problem.
I have tried to make my main program smaller but could not spend much
time on it. I just want to make you clear that the improper indentations has
occurred accidentally and excessive commenting is made only to make you
understand the implementation techniques of my project.
Regards,
AJAY KUMAR CHINTALA

I'm not very confident in your coding skills after having read through your source codes. Here is some feedback to help you improve your coding style: 1. There are too many comments. You were right about earlier - the code should be self-documenting as much as possible and contain just enough comments where clarification is needed. Also, this is not as critical, but all things being equal the comments should adhere to the standard C comments using /* ... */ rather than the C++-style (a.k.a. BCPL-style) comments. This is to be compatible with older compilers on non-standard platforms whenever possible. This depends on your target platforms, however. 2. Indentations are inconsistent and incomprehensible. Some indentations are 0 spaces while I've found a location with 25 spaces (not tabs that result in 25 spaces) as the indentation. I also found a place that had 2 space indentation at the opening bracket but 5 space indentation at the closing bracket, which is misleading. This is not only irregular (which would be a minor annoyance) but this makes code hard to read and bug-prone. This is a huge problem that should be obvious from the beginning. 3. Header files contain functions! Header files should not contain functions (except macros, and also inline functions and templates when writing C++ codes) but the functions should be included in separate .c files. The header files should contains appropriate multi-C file This is an important concept to understand, but probably not something you'd be expected to know at this point in your career so I wouldn't count it against you, though. 4. The main function is too long. It should be broken down to smaller functions if possible. (Tux Paint, however, also suffers from the same problem, a problem I hope will be corrected sometime in the future.) 5. You shouldn't need to add comments or clean up the code for us. The code you write on a daily basis should stay relatively clean most of the time and fairly presentable without much modification. It appears you made a lot of effort to add all these comments which troubles me, because it shows the code you normally write is not very clean and requires a lot of work to clean up. However, do not take my comments too critically at this point in your career. I would not expect you to be able to know or do any of the above with expertise at this point in your career juncture as a university student EXCEPT #2. #2 should be fairly obvious even to a beginning programming student and I would expect a decent programmer at a university program to have made at least some effort to correct them while one was writing the code. Codes without decent indenting often create buggy and hard to read code and that will harm a project more than help it. I'm not sure if I'll be able to help you here. Other mentors may feel differently but I'm afraid I cannot endorse your application this year. I hope you improve your coding skills and apply again next year. Regards, -Mark |

As i am currently having my final exams, i did not get time to comment the code or to extract out code from my working directory.I have just sent my working folder. So it contains the windows binaries and dlls. Though the code is not commented, i have written it in a way that everybody can understand it easily. Almost every line of code is self explanatory. I will be able to finish the documentation part of my project by this Friday as i have final exams till then. I have separated the code and necessary files from other files and have uploaded them separately here. http://www.uploadcomet.com/download.php?file=1c01ca32c13e8b41d2b396b2c5270230 Please check this link for the separated code and also i am sorry for uploading the code by mixing up with other files earlier. My comment on your application was that you'd provided a windows executable, and I don't have a windows box here. Also rar is pretty unfree. I am therefore unable to review your animation program as it doesn't run on linux.. Caroline |

Dear sir, I have made an application to GSoC with the proposal of developing a slideshow application to create slides using the Tux Paint pictures. I have explained my implementation methodology in my application. Please let me know whether i am clear with my implementation or not. Please forgive me as i am using this channel for clearing my doubts related to GSoC. I am using this channel because i am unable to connect to IRC as i am behind a firewall( M/S Ironport) in my university. Regards, AJAY KUMAR CHINTALA. |

Dear sir, I have now uploaded an updated version of my project. Its download link is http://www.uploadcomet.com/download.php?file=bdcb2d4e64cb1e63bec6cfa84fdffa82. I have included all the necessary .dll files in the directory. It is working fine under windows XP. It is a 847 kb .rar file with 41 items in the directory. I have tested it on quite a number of systems which has run my application without any problem. Please take some time to review my animation program. Regards, AJAY KUMAR CHINTALA. |

Hi people, last night I had a free couple of hours, so I wrote a new patch to integrate thumbnail dialogs code, which includes the changes of the previous one. http://www.littlechina.org/~dilly/tuxpaint_modular2.diff The work is just starting, but I believe the code must be available as soon as possible. Suggestions are welcome. See ya, Bruno |

My comment was because I couldn't actually run it as you provided an EXE file only, ie a windows binary. Caroline |

Dear sir, I have made an application for Google Summer of Code with the proposal of adding an animation segment to Tux Paint. You have added a comment to my application saying " Your animation program is windows only". I have added my comments to my application thinking that you have asked me about the application which i have made under my computer graphics course. I have coded that application using SDL libraries. I did not use any system dependent functions. As SDL can be run on any platform, my application can be run simply by compiling the source code in that required platform. Regarding the proposal i have made of adding an animation segment and a toolbox, i will be coding the complete segment using SDL and C, so the application can be made compatible on any platform. I am writing to you again because i am afraid that you may not get notified of my comment on my application. Please let me know whether i am clear or not. Regards, AJAY KUMAR CHINTALA. |

I've found that I got quite bad smearing at the top and bottom when I tried to make one. I meant to work out what was going on but didn't get round to it. We also need svg starters ;) Caroline |

The "Loading Other Pictures into Tux Paint" section of the README documentation was updated in CVS (and the "Starters" section of the Extending Tux Paint documentation now just refers to it). Here you go: http://tuxpaint.cvs.sourceforge.net/*checkout*/tuxpaint/tuxpaint/docs/html/README.html?revision=1.92#loading_into There's a section called "Doing it Manually", with a subsection called "Calculating Image Dimensions". I try to use as much room for the canvas as possible, and nowadays, Tux Paint windows can be any size, so it's really 'size of the window, minus some values to account for the UI elements (toolbox, color picker, etc.)' Whew :) -- -bill! bi...@ne... http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/ |

Hello, I have design a starter image, but the image is not well rendered in TuxPaint due to the different width and height. What's the size for these images ? Thanks ! Jo |

I'm on batter with a very bad network connection, so apologies for the brief reply. I'd probably go with system dialogs, rather than using something written in SDL. That is, either OS-specific code, or, as you suggested, GTK+. Or perhaps Qt or wxWidgets. On OS X, BeOS (I believe) and Windows, we have OS-specific code for bringing up printer dialogs. (On Linux, I use a system() or popen() command to execute an external tool, such as "kprinter" or "xprinter".) Thanks and good luck! -bill! Hi people, I submitted a GSoC proposal about adding support for system file dialogs, and I searched for some ways it could be done. I analyzed three options: - using gtk+ - using toolkits based on SDL (I just found some written in C++, so I will need to write wrappers with bindings) - writing the code without using toolkits I wrote what I researched and my thoughts about each option at http://bdilly.livejournal.com/ But I want to hear your suggestions. Thanks in advance, Bruno |
