I understand the jist, but could you give me an example chunk of code (within a Magic tool) where this is used, so I can make sure I do it properly? He may be using the latest Tux Paint code from CVS (which now needs 'swithcin/switchout' functions in the Magic tools), which your Magic code might not have yet. -bill! |

Hi Adam,
Nice to see your admitions, creating new tools for TuxPaint is always nice.
Now on to porting the source to BeOS/ZETA in my case, I just had to add a few
brackekts {} in the source to make them compile. After that compiling and
installing works fine.
I don't see the tools showing up in the magic tools section when starting
TuxPaint though.
Anyway will keep you informed on porting issues and fixes if you need them.

Hi Vicki - this is more of a question for 'tuxpaint-users', but I'll answer it here on 'tuxpaint-devel'. (I'm also Cc'ing Vicki since it looks like she's not actually subscribed to the list; at least not with the address she tried to post from.) Unfortunately, the Slide Show tool is pretty basic. No sound effects. At some point in the future, I'd like to make a completely separate presentation/animation program that integrates with Tux Paint, and it would have this feature and, obviously, much more. I'd also like to add sound-recording support, if possible. :) As for changing the action sounds in Tux Paint, yes this is possible. They are simply a collection of OGG (or perhaps some are also still WAV) sound files that live in Tux Paint's folder. What platform are you using Tux Paint on? (Windows? Mac? Linux?) Magic Tools now receive calls to "switchin()" and "switchout()" functions to tell them when they are being activated and deactivated. Currently, deactivation includes when temporary events happen, such as the user clicking Undo or Redo (or hitting Ctrl-Z, etc.), or using Open, Save, Print, Quit, etc. functionality. Activation occurs when those activities are finished. I haven't tested it much, I just added some printf() to one of my tools to check when the functions are called, but it seems to work. Please do "cvs update -dPC" to grab the latest from the main CVS repository. (GSOC folks in their own branches/sandboxes/whatever, please talk to your mentor about how to grab this.) This won't be all -- I plan to add a UI and API for "paint or entire-image" modes for Magic tools. But... dinner time! -- -bill! So I'm at my inlaws', and they have a Windows 2000 Professional system with Tux Paint 0.9.19 installed on it. I let my ~19 month old son bang around on it in fullscreen mode and I noticed two very troublesome issues. (1) Hitting the Windows or Menu key on the keyboard (I'm not sure which, or if both do it) causes Tux Paint to disappear and the desktop to reappear. We've discussed this previously, but now that I've seen it in action, I'd _really_ like to see it fixed soon! :^) (2) Hitting the Quit key sequence in Tux Paint (for when --noquit is set) actually brings up the Windows task manager. (Ctrl+Shift+Escape) Oops! Noone ever mentioned this conflict before! I'll make sure both of these issues are bugged, and will assign them to John (I hope that's ok!) Thanks, -- -bill! I hope that everyone already knows that I am building a character recognition magic tool as part of GSOC 2008. I have created the part where characters drawn by using the pen tool are converted to .ink files and are recognized as language alphabets. This is done through shape recognizer and hence is completely language (not programming language, but spoken language) independent. But now I am building the user interface for my magic tool and I am encountering few usability issues. I would like some hints and suggestions from other tuxpaint developers. After the user draws a character using the pen tool, on what event should the recognition begin? Bill had mentioned that the user should click on checkbox/button when done. But I have not found an easy way to create a checkbox/button using magic tools. Another Idea could be that when another magic tool is selected the recognition should begin i.e. the user first selects my magic tool called drawText, then draws a character on the canvas, then clicks on another magic tool, then the recognition will begin and the character will be displayed as font. But even a magic_tool_change_event is unavailable through the api. How do you suggest I can implement this workflow? Any other ideas? -- Regards, Namrata Nehete. |

The compressed source I downloaded from: http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?groupname=tuxpaint&filename=tuxpaint-0.9.20.tar.gz seems to be corrupted. After command: tar -zxvf tuxpaint-0.9.20.tar.gz an error message occured: gzip: stdin: invalid compressed data--crc error tar: Child returned status 1 I tried two different mirrors. The effect is the same. However this problem doesn't make compilation (for Linux) impossible. Everything seems to be OK. BTW: Yesterday I came back from all-Poland conference in Warsaw-the capitol of Poland. The conference was about information society in Poland and way we create such society. I was talking about education software on GNU/GPL licence (or similar), also about TuxPaint. I showed them some screenshots, sample art galleries, told about capabilities and how to get this software (how to install/download etc...). I also mentioned about Tuxpaint participating in GSoC. Hope TuxPaint will have some more users :) I had only 15 minutes for everything. Next year I'll have whole an hour :D Regards, Adam |

I agree with you that would be a great idea and there are obviously another number of tools that would benefit from the ability to control some sort of variable. Unfortunatly the magic tools api has no facility to have this sort of feature. It would be great to be able to add other images in a similar fashion however that would either require lots of tools (a bit messy and overengineered in my opinion) or a modification to the plugin api to allow the selection of images inside a magic tool. hi all, Mark asked me to post my GSoC project status on the devel list. As Bill had suggested I am implementing a label tool. I am implementing the tool as an option in the current text tool. Because there will be only a few more surfaces added, I think that performance will not be affected much. The basic framework for adding text to a separate layer has been completed. The layer is transparent except for rendered text pixels which are opaque. The user interface has also been completed. There still a little work to be done with regards to the mouse cursor code. I am currently working on the self referential data structures to hold the data so that later selection and editing is possible. The basic selection and editing utility is almost nearing completion. Only VIDEO_BPP of 32 is supported at the moment. My next goals in order of priority are: supporting undo and redo and then to support saving, loading, saving the data about the layer to support editing across sessions, scaling which might also be essential for across the session editing, supporting other bpp. I'd love to hear your comments and suggestions! regards, Arunodai |

It would look kind of like fabric paint, toothpaste, caulking, etc. How about "vertical wood" and "horizontal wood"? (tile an image in a hidden buffer, then copy it to the screen as the user paints) Try to concentrate on the use case: making art. Always ask yourself if the tool would be really good for that. There are some really neat tools that don't actually do something useful; avoid those. |
