Hi everyone, My name is Farhan Khan. I'm interested in migrating tuxmath to SDL 2.0. I have experience with SDL, SFML and I've previously ported a couple of my games from SDL to SFML and SDL with OpenGL (2d), as well as among different versions of these libraries. My question is where should I get the tuxmath & t4kcommon sources from? I've tried the git repos, I've got t4kcommon to compile but tuxmath doesn't compile - lots of linking errors (t4kcommon). I'm working on getting the errors out of the way - but I wanted to ask am I missing something? I just checked on t4k site, it was mentioned not to use the git build as it is incompatible with tuxmath. But to migrate the code, I'll need both t4kcommon and tuxmath sources. Can I use the tars instead to work on migrating the code? -- Thanks & Regards, Mohammed Abdul Farhan Khan. (Web: http://fkhan.tk <http://tecfreak.tk>) |

Be sure to put in details for each project, vaguely described projects probably won't get picked. For tuxmath I'll defer to the tuxmath list, I've cc'd that list on this reply. I encourage you to discuss your tuxpaint idea(s) further with them. It's not clear to me how the physics game can be made into an extension for tuxpaint. Your description sounds a lot like numpty physics ( http://numptyphysics.garage.maemo.org/). It might be interesting to have a tool or mode that will make a drawing come to life using box2d, but the idea would have to be better defined. Play around with tuxpaint for a little while and see what ideas you come up with that would fit into the program. Keep in mind that tuxpaint runs on several different OS and hardware platforms, not all of which support box2d, for those that don't your add-on would need to detect that during configure and just not build on that platform. I see you've done some android development, you might also consider a project to port tuxpaint to android. In your proposal(s) be sure to include details, including your skills, project timeline/goals, etc. -scottmc |

Hi, I am mahendra chouhan , 3rd year b.tech student(IIT-BHU). I saw the idea page and installed tuxmath. I really liked the game. I am intrested in extending the game for android devices with some modification.I am planning to include multiplayer mode in current game using bluetooth/wifi so that player can compete with each other. Currently i have a vauge game idea - The game will have 'bricks' and 'ballons' , each person can shoot bricks(that increases his weight) or ballons(that decreases every other players weight) as per the mathematical equations.Player with the highest weight will win in the end.Mathematical equations can be of several types like finding the brick with highest weight or arithmetic etc. I was planning to include other features as well like mazes(player that solves the maze faster wins) or some sort of quiz etc. Other thing that i had in mind was using box2d/andEngine to create a simple real physics game(something similar to cryaon physics) we can use it to teach kids physics.goal of the game is to take an object from point A to point B.On clearing a level player will be awarded a new item like spring/rocket(and some info on them) etc to use in next level. This can be include in TuxPaint as an extension. My skills include c/c++,java,python. I have previously worked on Qt,twisted and android platform. I have a keen interest in developing multiplayer games for mobile devices and networking. I have worked on simple android apps like jigsaw puzzle, music player,BluetoothChatserver etc and experience in implementing simple games like snake, single player tic-tac-toe in c++ and creating simple networking apps like keylogger, file browser, chat server etc in qt and twisted. Can I purpose multiple projects ? if not which one should i choose ? need suggestions.. |

Hello Everyone, I am writing as to introduce myself and express interest in working with the Tux4Kids foundation this year during the Google Summer of Code, hopefully developing unit tests to make the Tux4Kids Math program function better and bug-free. My name is Darwin Froese and I am just finishing up my second year of my Computer Science Undergraduate studies. I hope that I can be a vital asset to developing the Tux4Kids software with my wide array of knowledge in defensive and proactive programming, this summer as well as in the future. I have seen how beneficial of a project Tux4Kids is firsthand and would love to contribute to it knowing the effect it has. I hope that I can get to know everyone better as well as make contributions outside of the GSoC program and help people everywhere. Best Wishes, Darwin |

Hello, I wish to work with Tux4Kids during GSoC 2013, and I'm interested in several ideas from your list, including "*Create unit tests for Tux Math and t4k_common*". As I had a little experience with CUnit, I wrote some tests on a fork of t4kcommon, in t4kcommon/src/tests. You can see the commit on my github : https://github.com/OjeromeO/t4kcommon/commit/d788d06d2ce2a6c6cf34ca893a0b02676c1aa3d7 And here are the files : https://github.com/OjeromeO/t4kcommon/tree/jerome-dev/src/tests Thanks for reading ! Hi Sunil, Good to know your interests. If you are looking for developing an app from scratch, feel free to discuss the app idea. We already have some momentum with the Tuxmath app built during last summer, and would like to see it reach a mature state. You can look at the code here https://github.com/tux4kids/tuxmathmobile, and perhaps start contributing by fixing bugs, adding documentation to the wiki, or reporting bugs/issues with it. Good luck, Siddharth On Thu, Apr 11, 2013 at 1:25 PM, Sunil Kumar <sun...@gm...>wrote: > Hi everyone, > > I'm Sunil Kumar C, an undergraduate student pursuing Bachelor of > Engineering in Computer Science and Engineering at PES Institute of > Technology, Bangalore, India. Hi Madhawa, Good to know about you. One of the projects last year ported/re-implemented Tuxmath to mobile. The end result is a good base to proceed further. The app is written in HaXe NME, which is open source (MIT license) and provides cross-platform support for all major platforms out there. I have recently added the code on Tux4Kids unofficial github repository https://github.com/tux4kids/tuxmathmobile, and have been working on scaling assets at runtime (see the devel branch). A few solid starter contributions for this project can be - 1. The code has poor debugging support. A good start would be to add a debug macro, with a level wise debug support (1 - benign tracing, 2 - moderate tracing, 3 - heavy tracing). 2. Scaling approach can be improved. I am currently compiling assets for a particular device dimension (1920x1200) and then scaling them based on the runtime device dimensions. Using svgs (and a svg to bitmap parser) instead of bitmaps at compile time should reduce the generated .apk size by a huge factor. 3. Refactor the code to a consistent standard. All three tasks should give one a good familiarity with the code base. Send in the pull requests when you have one of the tasks finished. Use the github project issue tracker to report bugs/feature requests. If you interested in porting TuxType or TuxPaint, you can create a lo-fi prototype and show it to us. In this case, you would have flexibility in choosing an open-source development language/framework with cross-platform support. If you have a different idea, you can share it and get a feedback before building up. Hope that helps, Siddharth On Wed, Apr 10, 2013 at 10:44 AM, Madhawa Chandrasena <dil...@gm...>wrote: > Hi, > I am a student of Computer Science & Engineering in Sri Lanka. Hi everyone, I'm Sunil Kumar C, an undergraduate student pursuing Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science and Engineering at PES Institute of Technology, Bangalore, India. I'm an avid programmer, a FOSS enthusiast and would like to contribute to Tux4Kids through GSoC 2013. I have been working on android applications since one and a half years now. I love building mobile applications. Currently I'am working on a web based application as a part of academics which needs HTML5, CSS, Javascript, JQuery and PHP. Also I'am working on an Android application as a part of Intel CCF(Common Connectivity Framework) App Challenge. Although i do not have a very good knowledge on cross platform application development using Phonegap, i know some basics of Phonegap. I went through the ideas page of your organization and it really impressed me. The idea of developing math based learning application for kids looks amazing. As i have a good knowledge on HTML5, CSS, Javascript and developing native Android applications i thought it would be a great opportunity for me to contribute to Open Source world through GSoC 2013 and I'm sure I'll find it very enjoyable to contribute to this community. Dear arshpreet, your idea "$export MALLOC_CHECK_=0" does'nt solve the problem : After the "6 fast space bar hits", you can't play anymore to any of the two options in factoroid (nor factors, nor fractions). What has changed is that there is no more crash and other items of "principal menu" are still available. hope you'll find a solution :) Le 06/04/2013 20:38, arshpreet singh a écrit : > > > > On Wed, Apr 3, 2013 at 10:21 PM, tita guery <tit...@fr... > <mailto:tit...@fr...>> wrote: > > Dear all, > > lost of thanks for your amazing work on tuxmath ! > > I'm running tuxmath on ubuntu12.04, this is the version 1.8.0 of > tuxmath. > > I can reproduce a bug in the asteroid mode : > > If I hit 6 times the space bar in less than one second : the game > stop with a double free or memory corruption error interruption > (see the attached log file) > > > please try the following command before running tuxmath > > $export MALLOC_CHECK_=0 > > hope that helps.but now my question is how we can fit this solution > into Tuxmath's source code?

I can reproduce a bug in the asteroid mode : If I hit 6 times the space bar in less than one second : the game stop with a double free or memory corruption error interruption (see the attached log file) This bug didn't exist before (with the previous LTS ubuntu 10.04 and its associated tuxmath). I would be pleased to give you any information you need to fix that bug. My children love your way of doing math :) Lots of thanks. |

Hello , I am Shalin Shah, a sophomore at DAIICT<http://www.daiict.ac.in> having some knowlledege of android and windows as well as languages like C, C++, JAVA , Python ,C#. After seeing the ideas list of tux4kids I am really interested in working with tux and I have an idea in my mind for tux which is a new concept and direction for tux. I am from India and here we have around 500k villages here and there are many developing countries where there are numerous villages .Now recently I did my rural internship at a village whre I worked with an NGO so now I know what problems they face.So what I want is we could develop an a logo quiz game for kids which will basically motivate them to do things which are good and make them avoid doing things that are wrong. Eg - Beating your wife or daughter-in-law is wrong. So the game should have these kind of pool of questions( for which I have the material :) ) where in if the kids selects correct answer should give him points and if wrong then decrease his points. So what I want is could you please give some comment on this idea and whether tux is ready for this new direction which is working for upliftment of society. Initially I would like to develop it for android platform and later port it to windows. If you are not ready for this idea could you please suggest me which application to start working on improving features etc.I have recently made my windows application called city buddy<https://github.com/shalinshah1993/AppsDreamer.git>which is a utility application giving you all the details of the city you want. For android recent application was I-job<https://github.com/shalinshah1993/Location-Alarm.git>.Please do comment on my idea. -- Yours Sincerely, Shalin Shah |

The problem is very much that of lack of time, at least on my part. In the "real world", I'm the senior-most surgeon in the busiest liver transplant program in the United States for 2012. I'm not a trained engineer or anything like that. Tux4Kids is a labor of love for me, but it is very much just a hobby, and my actual career has become even more busy and stressful than it was a few years ago. To make matters worse (for GSoC availability, that is), I've been named by our medical center to be one of the main physician/IT liasons for this enormous EMR transition we are going through (Brendan knows what I am talking about). So, any "hacking" time I have is getting sucked up by making the computers at my real job serve our needs better. Finally, my family thinks I spend all my time "playing on the computer" and ignoring them. So if Tux4Kids is going to be in GSoC this year, anyone who can mentor needs to step forward right away. As for GSoC admin (which very largely means writing the organization proposal and grading the student proposals), I *really* would prefer for someone else to do it, as I know I'm not going to be able to put the proper time into it. However, if we have mentors but no other admin, and the application won't get submitted any other way, I will do it "for the team". I have a couple of days right now, so I could fill the application but really I don't want/will not be able to be the main admin. In another related thing, can we "sponsor" librecad to gsoc? Last year, for reasons of work I had to use their software a lot, they quickly fixed some bugs I found and accept some patches I submit. They even gave me permissions to their pootle server. Their gsoc application last year was rejected because too many great applications for to few org slots, so I think if they get sponsor from another org they could have more luck. Cheers Pere |

I saw it opened yesterday. We can see who has time and interest. I'm not going to be able to do it myself this year, much as I would like to spend time on OSS. I often come across software though where the devs haven't thought about people wanting to use a language other than their OS language, and there is no option to change it. I'm sorry if I went a bit overboard with this, but for minority languages this is a constant problem. Operating systems are the least flexible software you can get as to language availability, yet other software tends to build on it. For example, I have a Gaelic language Browser with Gaelic as my preferred browser language set up, and what does Google Maps do? That's right, ignore all that and read my system locale and give me German ... A friend of mine has blogged on this problem, if you're interested http://akerbeltzalba.wordpress.com/2011/12/15/detect-locale-manna-from-heaven-or-hellspawn/ /rant *lol* > Could you please look into adding a menu option somewhere, so users can > > choose their language? > > > That indeed is a very good and repeatedly-requested feature that we have > never gotten around to implementing. > > Also, while I cannot claim to be Scottish given that my family has been > in North America for several generations, my direct paternal ancestors > did emigrate from Scotland to Canada around 1790, so I am delighted to > hear of your interest!
