Hi Arshpreet, I have to run to work, but here are a few thoughts. 1. Looks like "pa" is the correct two-char abbreviation, so the file should be "pa.po" 2. You have to add pa to the list in po/LINGUAS 3. Make sure your translation got installed - look in /usr/local/share/locale, there will be a directory for each language. There should be one for pa, under that should be LC_MESSAGES, under that should be tuxmath.gmo. Also, if the translation is there, make sure you are calling your customized tuxmath rather than the one from apt-get by typing "which tuxmath" - it should say "/usr/local/bin/tuxmath". 4. It sounds like you definitely have the pa_IN.UTF-8 locale installed already, but otherwise that would be something you could confirm by running "sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales" 5. From the command line, I test different languages by setting the LANG variable directly, e.g. instead of just typing "tuxmath", type "LANG=pa_IN.UTF-8 tuxmath". But it looks below like you have the LANG environmental variable set correctly. 6. You might test running tuxmath in a different translation known to work, for example make sure you have the French locale on your machine (can add it by "sudo dkpg-reconfigure locales" as listed above), then run "LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8 tuxmath". My best bet is that you could have overlooked the po/LINGUAS step, but maybe not. Hope that helps, David Bruce On Sat, Jan 19, 2013 at 7:15 AM, arshpreet singh <ar...@gm...> wrote: > hello sir > thanks for help in tuxmath translation in punjabi. > i have successfully completed the translation file name pa_IN.po and able > to re-run make and make install.both the commands worked correctly without > error. :) > i also changed my local language to punjabi but when i do run TuxMath it > runs only in english language.(my other apps firefox or gedit runs in > punjabi) > as all the steps we discussed in chat have completed but TuxMath still > runs in default English language. > here is the $locale command output from my terminal: > > *root@mercymachine:/home/mercy-machine# locale > LANG=pa_IN.UTF-8 > LANGUAGE=pa_IN > LC_CTYPE=pa_IN.UTF-8 > LC_NUMERIC="pa_IN.UTF-8" > LC_TIME="pa_IN.UTF-8" > LC_COLLATE=pa_IN.UTF-8 > LC_MONETARY="pa_IN.UTF-8" > LC_MESSAGES=pa_IN.UTF-8 > LC_PAPER="pa_IN.UTF-8" > LC_NAME="pa_IN.UTF-8" > LC_ADDRESS="pa_IN.UTF-8" > LC_TELEPHONE="pa_IN.UTF-8" > LC_MEASUREMENT="pa_IN.UTF-8" > LC_IDENTIFICATION="pa_IN.UTF-8" > LC_ALL= > > *should i need to change the name of file ".po" file. i tried with *pu.po, > pa.po, pa_IN.po, pa_PK.po and pa_IN.UTF-8.po* > > -- > > Thanks > Arshpreet singh > http://arshpreetsingh.wordpress.com/ -- David Bruce For all your software needs, visit The Apt Store: deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian stable main |

Hi Arshpreet (sending from phone, will explain more fully when I get home) 1. 64 bit is fine 2. The error is definitely the failure of SDL_ttf to load the Andika font. Make sure you are configuring and building tuxmath with SDL_pango enabled, meaning you install libsdlpango-dev (exact lib name might be slightly different) before you run configure and make. Tuxmath will use SDL_pango if available, but it must be present at the time of configure. thanks for your help sir i was getting lots of problems while installing on centos so i decided to change my platform centos to debian squeeze(latest version) and i am sucessfully able to build it from source. :) when i try to run tuxmath from terminal "/usr/local/bin/tuxmath" it got started but after the welcome screen it closes and gives the following result:- LoadFont(): /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-sil-andika/AndikaDesRevG.ttf NOT loaded successfully. Segmentation fault i had google it and also tried to reinstalling the andika fonts but the situationis same.it closes automatically after welcome screen and shows the same error. -- Thanks Arshpreet singh http://arshpreetsingh.wordpress.com/ |

Hi Arshpreet, Pretty sure mixer is optional, but your output says RSVG was not found. I think Pango depends on RSVG too. Installing libRSVG should fix your problem. doc/install says you can get away without RSVG, just using ttf and image, but I'm not sure that's still true. Vector graphics/fonts are preferred, in any case. Hi Shalin, We're not participating in GCI this year, but you're certainly welcome to do some hacking for fun and bragging rights :) I suggest first making sure you can build and run the game you're most interested in, then deciding what you'd like to work on. Respected Tux4Kids, My name is Shalin Shah and I am currently pursuing my B.Tech degree in ICT at DA-IICT(Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communications Tech.). I am keenly interested in contributing to your open source projects. I have experience in C,C++,JAVA,Android. But I am new to this and so I don't know from where to begin so please suggest me from where should I start. Awaiting for your positive response. With Regards, Shalin Shah |

My kids are using it, but I'm not a developer. Can I offer some suggestions for features/changes? Are folks still working on it? Emily |

Hi, One thing is pretty clear, however - tuxmath has always been a GPL project, >> and we don't have the legal standing to use the source except >> > > Think the rest of your message got cut off? AFAIK, though, Deepak's > project is a complete rewrite and isn't bound by existing source. I could > be mistaken. Yes, got cut off. But the important point is that this is a re-write, so we can use a license that doesn't raise any issues with Apple's developer agreement. I missed the earlier part of the thread and was just talking about use of previous GPL tuxmath code. I think something unrestrictive like the MIT or BSD license, or perhaps Apache, would be a good choice for any OSS project we want to get into the App Store. There are GPLv2 apps in the App Store, to be sure. They get around the requirement of providing source code by offering it for download on their own site, since the user can't get it through Apple. This doesn't strictly satisfy the GPL, because Apple is distributing binary-only software. Apple claims they aren't distributors via the App Store any more than Best Buy is a distributor when you buy something in a box, but this argument seems specious to me. As for the GPLv3, it explicitly requires that any user who gets the binary also can get not just the source, but any digital keys or signatures required to run modified versions on the same hardware. This isn't compatible with Apple's iOS policies by any interpretation. So, if we have a complete rewrite, let's just go with a permissive OSS license. I'm a fan of the GPL, but in this scenario I'm more attracted by getting our software in front of all the kids who have iPads and iPhones, irrespective of what I think about Apple's control-freak behavior. -- David Bruce For all your software needs, visit The Apt Store: deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian stable main |

Eew. Apple is always making things difficult. What's the upshot, then? Does it mean that ("technically") we can't or shouldn't submit GPLv* software to the App Store, or that if we do, and some evil developer were to steal, modify, repackage and profit from TM, that we'd have no legal power to stop it? I guess a multiple license scenario, like what Qt does, could enable the iPhone version to have a compatible license, but I have no idea what that entails. > One thing is pretty clear, however - tuxmath has always been a GPL > project, and we don't have the legal standing to use the source except Think the rest of your message got cut off? AFAIK, though, Deepak's project is a complete rewrite and isn't bound by existing source. I could be mistaken. -Brendan |

The biggest practical disadvantage is that GPLv3 is unequivocally not compatible with Apple's App Store terms. According to many, including the FSF, GPLv2 isn't compatible with the App Store either, but the issues seem to be such that no once can complain to Apple except the authors of the software in question, and Apple doesn't seem to care unless/until the authors try to complain. As for tuxmath's licensing, it traditionally was considered to be "GPLv2 or later", except that the licensing was not at all well-documented, and many source files lacked any licensing or copyright terms at all. We tried to clean all this up a couple of years ago, and I thought it best to go to a uniform "GPLv3 or later". However, I don't think anyone within the project would object to use under "GPLv2 or later" terms. The only code I think we really cannot do that for would be the liblinebreak code which, IIRC, was copied from an old version of gettext by Tim Holy. That code is definitely "GPLv3 or later". If we want to use some of tuxmath's current code under something other than "GPLv3 or later", we need to at least try to email anyone who has made significant contributions in the last couple of years and see if anyone objects. One thing is pretty clear, however - tuxmath has always been a GPL project, and we don't have the legal standing to use the source except -- David Bruce For all your software needs, visit The Apt Store: deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian stable main |

Deepak, I'd assume we'd want to stick with GPL v3 like the other titles, unless anyone sees a problem with that. Of course, you're the author. Can we not detect the display resolution at runtime? I just released an update that increased the size of the on-screen numeric keypad. I'll play around with what the best size may be some more, but the one seems better. I see what you're saying about the comet images and transparency. I hadn't even noticed that! I'll look into it some more. > I've been mostly inactive with tux4kids the last few months due to my real > job, and our website is woefully outdated, but I have to say I am really > happy to see this and would like to see an optimized, official android port > at some point. Sure, you can use the code I put up on Github as a basis if you want ( http://github.com/dennis-sheil/commandergenius/tree/mathgame ). I'd be happy to help out however you want to do it. The last update to Google Play went out an hour ago, I haven't pushed the new code up to Github yet, but I will. 68% of people who downloaded the app still have it on an active Android device, a very high ratio for Google Play's Android Market. Inevitably this percentage falls as people get new phones and so forth. Some things I changed in the update: * As I said, bigger numeric keypad * Fix problem with volume keys, now works normally * Pause now works on some devices (hitting the menu or search button pauses the game on some Android devices) Another big thing I did was I ported the game to Spanish. This is a little difficult as Android's libc is bionic and does not support setlocale, which gettext needs. I believe they are geared more toward ICU for localization. Anyhow, my port to Spanish is somewhat kludgey, in some places, very kludgey. But it seems to work. Not only did I translate strings over, I did some images as well, such as from images/status and images/title . For the Spanish version, I even removed "Enter" from the keyboard and replaced it with a crooked arrow. I'll probably do this in other languages that there are translations for as well - Portuguese, Hungarian, Bokmål, Swedish, Finnish etc. -- Dennis > On Jun 14, 2012 12:51 AM, "Dennis Sheil" <de...@va...> wrote: >> I did a (partial) port of TuxMath to Android.
