You also have to remember to have CVS_RSH set as 'ssh' (can't tell you how many times I've forgotten that on some new machine and cursed SF's CVS, when I was just being forgetful ;-) On Tue, 2002-03-26 at 14:46, nbs wrote: > On Tue, Mar 26, 2002 at 01:32:21PM -0800, Jacob Greig wrote: > > ill clean it up and submit it when i go home > > > > is sf cvs still giving you problems? if so maybe we need to ask sam if tuxmath can move its cvs to the new server? > > > > Seems to work ok now. But we are working on making some (at least) for Tux Typing (see chatlog from Sunday). Basically, we're wanting to make entrance into projects easier for others not intimately tied with them. Plus, we are thinking-of/working-on general engines for things, that, if they were to be reused, we'd need good dev documents. BTW, Bill, I've been spending the last week or two updating TuxTyping (web-site, CVS, etc., etc.). This next week, I'm going to try and do the same for TuxMath. As soon as I get more Noink2 infrastructure done, I will add all the admin stuff to TuxMath that I've been promising for months ;-) -- Sam Hart University/Work addr. <ha...@ph...> Personal addr. <cri...@ge...> |

Sam and I have been dicussing documentation standards offlist We wonder how everyone would feel about using Abiword and its file format .abw for developer documentation for the tux4kids project? One of the biggest plusses to using Abiword is that it then becomes trivial to create good html/xthml docs from it.. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Sorry folks, I've been very unreliable for a while now. I have no unique excuse, just the same old stuff you always hear from Open-Source developers who stop contributing for a while. Anyone really interested in the sordid details should probably read my diary entries since Feb. 6 at http://www.geekcomix.com/snh/ , and we'll leave it at that. But I'm back, and I apologize. Next item of business, my mail has had "issues". Long story short, I have lost a great deal of unread mail (I have no idea how much). Anyone who has sent me something urgent recently should probably send it again. Also, anyone who got bounces from my mail, know that the problems are now (theoretically) fixed. Apologies and notices out of the way, I expect some people will probably want to be off of these dev lists (they may have lost interest, or are ticked at me, or whatever). Anyone wanting to remove themselves from these lists feel free. If you do, however, please contact me privately so I can thank you for the work and effort you've put in. Especially contact me if you were someone with CVS or Bug-Tracking access on SourceForge/Savannah and want to be relieved of those duties. Tux4Kids: --------- I'm moving forward again. Sorry to hold everything back so much with my absence. This really proves I need to delegate more ;-) Anyway, here's some minor notes of interest that you guys may or may not know of: Noink2: The web-based infrastructure work is still coming. I actually restarted back in feb because I felt the direction I was going was stupid. You can get all the Noink2 work from the noink2 CVS repository. New-Physics Teaching Aide: I've been discussing doing a complete re-write of a physics teaching system at use at the U of A Physics Department. I've managed to get several people interested, and we're proceeding with doing it as a Free- Software project. This will not exactly be "4Kids", but it will be something that can be used for College and High School age students. No site or source code repository yet. Anyone interested should probably just contact me privately at this point. -- Sam "Criswell" Hart <cri...@ge...> AIM, Yahoo!: <criswell4069> Homepage: < http://www.geekcomix.com/snh/ > PGP Info: < http://www.geekcomix.com/snh/contact/ > Tux4Kids: < http://www.tux4kids.org/ > |

Hi, Just FYI, I managed to install the CVS version of TuxMath. Pretty neat. There is, indeed, a problem with the level of difficulty on many problems. Some quite difficult ones mixed in with some very easy ones. Are there plans for a more structured way of handling the level of difficulty with the problems? Perhaps being able to configure the game based on age and/or grade level. BTW, I liked the igloo graphic posted earlier this week. Perhaps an option could be to change the graphics based on age level (just thinking out loud...) Regards, Tim -- Caldera eWorkstation 3.1, kernel 2.4.9, KDE 2.2.1, Xfree86 4.1.0 |

How does this look for a start? http://www.sonic.net/~nbs/igloo.gif Should I do with it (and do the 'explosion' animations?) I was thinking they could be filled with Tux's stash of herring. (Thus removing the Sept.11th-conjuring visuals, and also having the advantage of making the game's premise make more sense... sorta ;) ) -bill! |

But kids are resilient, if anything. As the game places them in the position of protector, it can be perceived as a good thing. Kids and violent images are a touchy subject, but protecting animated cities from cartoonish comets, I think, is far enough away from "reality" to not be of major concern. That being said, something more innoucuous (sp) would certainly be OK, too. > > I'm not much of a developer, but there's gotta be something I can do to > > help. > > I've been a linux user for a couple years now and my family is nearly > > 100% Windows-free (I've got Windows 98 SE installed on one partition, > > but it's rarely used). > > Congrats! :) (This past holiday season, I'd tell people that my > house had "Not one Microsoft product... not even a mouse" ;) ) > > > <snip> > > > So, that being said, how can I help? > > Well, testing and suggestions are always useful! ;) ;) > (I especially want them for TuxMath, so I can finish the options screen) > I'll download it this weekend and play with it a little. Well, testing and suggestions are always useful! ;) ;) (I especially want them for TuxMath, so I can finish the options screen) I'm also interested in working on some other, more suite-like games... every time I see little electronic education kids' toys at stores, I want to make stuff like it for PCs. :) -bill! (and I don't even have any kids! (yet)) |

Hi, I just ran into tux4kids.org while following links from a Newsforge story (SDL Game contest results announced). It looks very interesting and I'd like to get involved, if the project is still active. I'm not much of a developer, but there's gotta be something I can do to help. I've been a linux user for a couple years now and my family is nearly 100% Windows-free (I've got Windows 98 SE installed on one partition, but it's rarely used). My distribution of choice is Caldera, because it works. I started with Caldera 2.3 and am currently running 3.1 (with kernel 2.4.9 and X 4.1.0), while my son's PC is running the 3.1.1 beta. (do not be confused by my posting from Mozilla under Win2K, I'm currently at work...) So, that being said, how can I help? Regards, Tim Wunder Baltimore, MD USA |

I have noticed some issues with writing SDL apps under the fbcon like these, but I am yet to completely figure out what is causing them. They happen pretty much uniformly whether we use SDL_FLip(..) or SDL_UpdateRects(..) > Also I've noted that if the data is missing or placed incorrectly > instead of the error being handled graciously as it is in X, when on > the console the error causes a complete lock up. Well, then don't do that ;-) Actually, this could potentially be a problem we'll want to look into. > I've verified this on several different setup (video cards, cpu's > distro's and gcc's 2.7 up to 2.9.3) > > On very fast machines 300mhz or faster running with kernel 2.4.8 (and > newer) and X 4.1 (low latency stuff) the number of comets and the speed > with which they desend drops to less than 10 seconds for the fall and > I've seen as many as 8 - 12 comets on the screen at once! > > Also under those conditions the numbers seem to get rediculously large > for the math operations (137 * 11!!!) I can't even get that one!!! Right, these are all settings we originally wanted to handle in the options screen. Bill (or anyone), any work being done on the options screen? I think we've gotten quite a few ideas and we should probably just proceed on it. -- Sam "Criswell" Hart <cri...@ge...> AIM, Yahoo!: <criswell4069> Homepage: < http://www.geekcomix.com/snh/ > PGP Info: < http://www.geekcomix.com/snh/contact/ > Tux4Kids: < http://www.tux4kids.org/ > |

When run on the framebuffer console (ie. no X) tuxmath flashes the comets, cities and tux at his desk. It appears to happen at framerate one frame the parts are visible and the next they're invisible. This only applies to the console game, works fine under X. Also I've noted that if the data is missing or placed incorrectly instead of the error being handled graciously as it is in X, when on the console the error causes a complete lock up. I've verified this on several different setup (video cards, cpu's distro's and gcc's 2.7 up to 2.9.3) On very fast machines 300mhz or faster running with kernel 2.4.8 (and newer) and X 4.1 (low latency stuff) the number of comets and the speed with which they desend drops to less than 10 seconds for the fall and I've seen as many as 8 - 12 comets on the screen at once! Also under those conditions the numbers seem to get rediculously large for the math operations (137 * 11!!!) I can't even get that one!!! __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo!
