Dear Tuxmath colleagues, I have just committed revision 9 to the svn repository. Highlights include: 1. Better support for playing through a defined list of questions - the player wins if the list is finished with at least one surviving city, with a simple "victory" screen showing Tux dancing. If all cities get blown up, the old "Game Over" graphic appears. In this mode, there is now a counter at the top of the screen showing the number of remaining questions, and the LED numbers display in a "flat panel monitor" on top of Tux's console. This mode is selectable with the "--norepeats" command line argument. 2. Support for questions in the forms num1 + ? = num3 and ? + num2 = num3. These are off by default but can be selected with the command line arguments "--answersfirst" and "--answersmiddle", respectively. Everything seems to work correctly by my own testing. I would like to get this revision into Debian unstable, if possible, so perhaps some more kids and parents can test it. Best wishes, -- David Bruce p.s. Holger, is there anything else I need to do to "release" any of these revisions to the public? Am I supposed to be putting binaries in the svn repository as well as my updated source? On a related note, I have had several local parents ask about a version for (gulp) Windows, so I am starting to look into learning to do a Windows build. |

Dear TuxMath Colleagues, I have just committed a major tuxmath update to the svn repository (revision 8). The code has been overhauled fairly extensively, mainly with the addition of a backend to generate question lists and keep track of correctly and incorrectly answered questions. There is not much different that is visible to the user as of yet. There should be a number of smaller commits adding new features in the upcoming weeks. Holger - although everything seems to work properly, there is a lot of new code in this release that should probably be tested more before packaging. Best wishes, -- David Bruce |

The visible changes include addition of an initial speed control to the Options screen (thanks Yves Combe), addition of mouse support to the Options screen, support for allowing subtraction answers to be negative, and revision of the optional on-screen touchpad to support negative answer input. > how did the code that David Bruce was working on go? My next commit to svn will be fairly major. I have (almost) written a backend that I have called "MathCards" that encapsulates all of the code related to generation of math questions. It allows much more fine-grained control of the question ranges and a lot of options, such as whether to recycle incorrectly answered questions into the "deck of flashcards". The new code is contained in two new files, mathcards.c and mathcards.h and could easily be reused if someone wrote a new game with a different interface (say, a KDE game for example). This also allows for a lot of simplification of game.c. I am trying to get the "official" tuxmath source in Subversion caught up to my private modifications, and the next commit will largely do that. > David I am really > interested in your speed control code. I think an option to slow the > comets down after an incorrect answer would be useful for the younger > kids. Good idea - will do that. > I would also like a option to set a goal or mission for the > kids. like to complete 5 waves. As an option, the game finishes with "victory" when the player has correctly answered all questions in the list specified by various options, now contained in a struct called math_opts in mathcards.h. I could commit the new code to svn any time, but I thought I should at least get it fully fleshed-out - should not be more than a couple of weeks. The main limitation is that I want to be able to read and write the math_opts struct to disk as a config file that could be modified with a text editor. As it stands now, I can only make use of the fine-grained control by changing the defaults in mathcards.h and recompiling, which isn't very applicable to wider distribution. Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated. Eventually I want to do a thorough overhaul of the Options screen, as most ordinary users will find editing config files to be unacceptable. Thanks, |

I was wondering if tuxmath is still alive? how did the code that David Bruce was working on go? David I am really interested in your speed control code. I think an option to slow the comets down after an incorrect answer would be useful for the younger kids. I would also like a option to set a goal or mission for the kids. like to complete 5 waves. Also if there was a victory graphic at each wave, that would be cool. well, thanks for writing this game, mine does enjoy it. nick |

Thanks for these changes. I would contribute if I could, but I'm not a programer at all. All I could do is translate the program in french. By the way, how to compile your version to windows? I can't figure how to do and I would like to include Tux Maths with some others free software I distribute to my pupils. Glad to see that Tux Maths is still alive (well, a little). I have been hacking on tuxmath for the last two weeks or so for the benefit of my seven year old daughter. I have been working from the sources in Debian Sid. So far, I have made the following changes: 1. limiting the game to two comets and preventing speed-up with new levels (probably not of general interest - done to keep my daughter from panicking). 2. added support for negative answers for subtraction - this probably is of general interest. Today I plan to implement a negative sign to the LED display, and also a command-line option regarding negative answers. 3. modifications to the graphics - our helmet penguin on the options screen has a pink bow to signify a girl penguin. This is pretty trivial, but perhaps some parents would desire this customization. At any rate, my daughter got a kick out of it. I am currently working on a significant overhaul of the "Options" menu. I want to implement finer-grained control of the question ranges, and also to give the child player a "mission" to complete. As it stands now, the game always ends in defeat, albeit maybe with a lot of points. I would like to be able to designate a set of math problems for kids to answer, and if they do so while keeping the cities alive, they win, with a "victory" screen and perhaps a printable certificate. I have not previously contributed to open-source projects. I have done a fair amount of C and C++ programming for my own amusement over the last ten years. I will read up on patch and other utilities. -- David Bruce |

The following changes have been commited (comet'ed?) to CVS :) -bill! ----- Forwarded message from Glen Ditchfield ----- Date: Mon, 07 Mar 2005 22:39:09 -0600 From: Glen Ditchfield Subject: Tuxmath patch To: bi...@ne... Here's a patch for Tux of Math Command, and three supporting files. If I created the patch correctly, then "patch -p0 < answer.diff" in a directory checked out from CVS earlier today should apply the changes. Copy the two pngs into data/images/comets and the wav into data/sounds, and you should be good to go. The most important change is that when a comet hits a city, the formula displayed on the comet is replaced by the correct answer, so that the students can learn from their mistakes. Other changes: - At slow speeds the game tended to draw comets on top of each other, which really frustrated my son. I put in some code to spread them out a bit. - Comets sizzle when hit. - Since the formula on a comet never changes, I calculated the string to display once, and took the sprintf call out of the inner loop. - Tidier linkage. You had static definitions in .h files, so every .c file that included the .h file had a separate copy of the defined items. I made them shared extern items, or static items inside .c files, as seemed appropriate. - Makefile: I compile with -g and strip during installation, so I can use a debugger during development. ----- End forwarded message ----- |

Tuxmath fails after trying to start it, because of failure to "load a music file" tuxmath & [1] 2580 julien@michkloo:~> Error: I couldn't load a music file: /usr/local/share/tuxmath/sounds/game.mod The Simple DirectMedia error that occured was: Couldn't read from '/usr/local/share/tuxmath/sounds/game.mod' The game-mod file does exist in the directory where it is expected. I just re-installed the rpm, but that did not help anything. In the past it has worked fine. I think however that was on SuSE 7.3, whereas now I have SuSE 9.0 installed. (If you have a suggestion about this failure, could you please also sent a copy to my personal address? I'm not sure I'm still subscribed to the developers list. Bill, I don't know anything about programming, so what I am about to suggest will probably make that perfectly obvious. The greatest possibility that I can see for Tuxmath is a teacher's interface that would allow the teacher to enter a problem set for the students to work on. Right now the game just seems to go on forever unless the student is not successful. If I were planning to use this in the classroom I would want to specify the type and number of problems the student would have to do. Then at the end of the "attack" have commander tux report to the student the number of correct responses and perhaps decorate them with a gold, silver, or bronze star. If the student scored below a certain level they would be kicked back to "academy" or some such thing where they could do some remedial work. If that type of approach is to complicated, or you don't care to expend the energy, then perhaps some libraries of problem sets could be coded in. For example there would be 100 problems of addition with no carrying and then 100 problems (or 50 or 25) where the student added with carrying, and subtraction with no renaming ... The teacher could then instruct the student to select a topic from a menu. The difficulty of the problems does not necessarily need to increase from one level to the next, the challenge could be the speed of the comets. I am willing to compile a list of problem sets for you if you wish. I push the integration of technology in the classroom very hard with my fellow teachers, but I also push the fact that it needs to be an integral part of their lessons. For Tuxmath to fit in that category, there has to be a coherent objective to the problems the students are getting, and it would be a very powerful tool with a teacher configuration tool. Since I am really pretty useless when it comes to contributing at the OS level, I jumped at the chance to help with the content part of tuxmath. I am a math/physics teacher by trade so I might be able to give some good input on problem sets at organizing topics. I will go fire up my real computer and play with commander tux a bit and send back some ideas. I can also consult with some elementary teachers about their curriculum. btw, my 3 year old loves tux paint. Tim Kaldahl Maplewood Academy I.T.
