Hello, Julien! I signed up on the developers list a few weeks ago, because I wanted to do a Norwegian translation of Tuxmath for Windows. I tried with the help of Bill Kendrick - the author - to persuade my development environment, Dev-C++ from www.bloodshed.net, to compile, but no luck. Since then, I haven't had time to look into it any further. In my correspondance with Bill, I too raised the question of manually setting the speed of the arrival of new questions, and he said he would include this. http://www.sonic.net/~nbs/tuxmath_opts.png shows the development version, so you can use this if want to limit the operators without editing the source code directly. The first part of getting sums within a given range is easy. In Microsoft Excel you can do this to create a random whole number within a range: =3DWHOLE_NUMBER(RANDOM()*(B-A)+A) It should be something like this in C: /* Declaring the variables, a and b sets the range */ int a,b; float random_number_within_range; int whole_number; /* Generating random number within the range set by A and B */ /* Converting the random float into a whole number */ whole_number =3D (int) random_number_within_range; Then you need some way to split the result into two integer values for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Perhaps this is very easy, as the randomness is already catered for by the initial "sum", but it requires some more thought - at least for me ;-) Yours sincerely, Haakon Meland Eriksen -----Opprinnelig melding----- Fra: Julien Michielsen [mailto:ju...@be...]=20 Sendt: 22. mai 2003 10:22 Til: Tuxmath devel list Emne: [Tuxmath-devel] Great software! Ok! Feel free to check out the latest CVS! :^) You can now toggle, separately, the operators (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) using the Options screen. You can also toggle the possible operand ranges (1-5, 6-12, 13-20). The only thing you can't change right now is the maximum value you can get. (Currently set to 144). Please try it out and share your thoughts! -- bi...@ne... Was I useful? Rate this message! http://newbreedsoftware.com/bill http://svcs.affero.net/rm.php?r=billkendrick |

Ok, I think I'm going to finally get off my Tux Painted rear-end and work on TuxMath again. :^) I'm going to support a number of options: * SFX Volume * Music Volume * Enable/disable on-screen keypad (maybe) * Enable/disable background graphics (maybe) * Enable/disable each of the four operators (+, -, *, /) * Set possible ranges for left and right operands (1-5, 6-12, 13-20) * Set maximum answer values (10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 400) Sound reasonable? It's _definitely_ better than what we have now (command-line options, which people seem to miss, even though they're mentioned in the --help display and README.txt ;^) ;^) ) -bill! -- bi...@ne... I've placed a link to this on the Tux Math download page: http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/tuxmath/ Also, to save some FTP bandwidth, I've moved the Windows builds over to SourceForge. Finally, I've used direct download links to SourceForge, like I do with Tux Paint. It should be less confusing. Sam - Can you update the links (for Mac & Win32) on the TuxMath page over at http://www.geekcomix.com/dm/tuxmath/dev/ ? (Or, if those are really out of date, just point those pages at geekcomix over to the pages I have at newbreedsoftware.com? Then I'll change the 'homepage' link at SourceForge) Thanks! -bill! ----- Forwarded message from Torsten Giebl <wi...@tu...> ----- Date: Mon, 3 Feb 2003 11:14:14 +0100 From: "Torsten Giebl" <wi...@tu...> Subject: Slackware Tuxmath Package online ! Hi there! Tux Math actually does have some very rudimentary support for this, on the command-line. e.g.: tuxmath --operator add --operator subtract There's no way to set these to any particular ranges at the moment, though, unfortunately. :^( The folks at EchoStar have actually tweaked TuxMath some for use on their DishNetwork satellite TV receiver / PVR [*], and someone there added some GUI code to handle skill options. They'll hopefully soon have that released on their FTP site. (They've been good about releasing their changes to other GPL'd software.) -bill! [*] Personal Video Recorder; like TiVo and ReplayTV |

I've been busy with Tux Paint (and getting married :^) ) Actually, one of the people at Dish Network (or his son, I think?) worked on the Options screen for Tux Math. Once they're ready for release, they'll place the updated code on a website they have for GPL compliance. I'll look over the changes there and probably incorporate them for us to all play with. :^) > What can we do in order to help you ??? ( in the TODO list ) We'll see once I get back into this project. :^) I think translations might be nice, now that I've had lots of practice dealing with it in Tux Paint. And testing, testing, testing! -bill! |

Sorry I still haven't done much work on Tux Math in a long time. :^( I've got some very interesting news, though! Someone from a company called Echostar (which I believe own(?) the Dish Network) just e-mailed me to let me know that Tux Math is going to be included in the latest software update for their "721" model Linux-based PVR (personal video recorder; like TiVo)!!! Apparently, one can even still watch TV while they play they game (alpha blending in the hardware, I think he said?) I think I'll ask if he can take a photograph of it and send it to me! :) Anyway, you can learn about the 721 here: http://www.dishnetwork.com/content/technology/receivers/dishpvr721/ Pretty cool! Too bad Tux Math isn't as ready for prime time (no pun!) as it should be. :^/ (*guilt!*) I also suggested he look at other Tux4Kids projects, like Tux Typing and Tux Paint. :) -bill! |

Hi, I use tuxmath with childrens and i have few remarks : There 's option for choose operator but not for choose number interval for operator ( for "x" operator we will choose only number beetween 1 and 5 for example) When a city was destroyed, equation continue to fall on ... Moreover the developpment seem be stop. The todo file has this entry : Install: * Set up "./configure" (autoconf/automake) stuff * Build for Windows, MacOS, BeOS Interface: * Music * Add more sound effects * Speech mode * Add option for number-keys to control main menu and possible options (for mouseless scenarios where arrow keys might not be the available... is there such a thing as numeric-only keyboards for PCs???) * High-score table? * Disable controls if game is over Game Play: * Score * End-of-level calculations, bonuses and animations * Finish tweaking equation-generation algorithm Documentation: * Finish README.txt * Finish INSTALL.txt * Finish Credits screen Options: * Options screen * Admin options screen / files Code: * Optimize graphics blitting!!! * Abstract SDL_BlitSurface() calls For first step ( install ) i can do configure script. For win32 version i do it (zip archive), and installer version will be available soon. For game play and interface, i can help too. All option and score should be store into xml file ???? (expat parser ???? ) ... What are the ideas for manage options scroe and other ???? Just few ideas, i hope tuxmath will be finish ... it's a great educationnal game. Sorry for my poor english, PEJAC Pascal |

Can anyone build a Windows version of TuxMath 2001.09.07, so that c't magazine can stick a copy on their CD? (see my forward of their request for permission to include it) Thx! -bill! |

I don't have time right this sec. to look into it too CLOSELY, to make sure what they're doing is proper. If someone else can, please do so. Else, I'll look into it later and give them the 'ok.' (I find it interesting that magazines/etc. go through all of this requesting rigamarole, seeing as the software is GPL'd. :) Usually, it's all hunky-dorey. I guess it's nice for /us/ to know it's being spread around...) -bill! I will be on the #tux4kids irc channel at irc.openprojects.net tomorrow (Sat. 20th) from around 10am Tucson, AZ time (what is that, MST?) until whenever (probably some time in the afternoon). Basically, I will be working on a multitude of things that I've neglected over the last week: xMP development, auto{make|conf} issues for a xMP & Tux Typing, and some final touches on the donated dev server. And anyone interested in discussing any of these things, feel free to join. The one thing that I do want to discuss specifically is xMP data format: what's needed, what's not. Anyone interested in xMP development, please join us there so we can hammer out a rough format to use.
