Dear Spring community,

I'm pleased to announce that Spring 2.0.1 has been released.

This is the first maintenance release for Spring 2.0, including fixes for
most bugs that have been reported since 2.0 final as well as many minor
enhancements. This release also introduces OpenJPA support and GlassFish
weaving support. Furthmermore, it features redesigned AspectJ support
internals and an improved bean definition tooling SPI.

As always, please see the changelog for the details.

FYI, the Spring 2.0.2 release is scheduled for end of December. Our JIRA
road map outlines the issues that are planned to be addressed in that
release.

[Springframework-developer] BeanDefinition parsing and lost information

hi,

I'm trying to customise the parsing of BeanDefinitions into a simple
placeholder registry (for the beandoc tool to cope with namespace support).

The registry is simple enough, but I'm struggling to see a reasonable way to
hook into the process in order to maintain the value of <description> tags
(if defined) and the name of the file or resource that the bean was defined
in.  Ideally, I need to tag each BeanDefinition with this data.

The BeanDefinition.getResourceDescription method doesn't quite work for the
resource name as it's a bit arbitrary and is not guaranteed to be set by
custom namespacehandlers either.  In fact the Spring aop and tx handlers
don't set it either.

Any pointers appreciated :)

FYI:
We finally got around to testing SavePoints under WebSphere 6.1 JTA 
controller trx. against SQL Server 2005.
We found, as you wrote, that it doesn't work, and additionally found the 
following reference links that states the same.

Ben didn't put the jars there yet. It can be done with mvn deploy but
to keep consistency we need to take the jars released through SF built

[Springframework-developer] JPA Exceptions propagating over RMI

Is there an easy way of preventing JPA or other runtime exceptions
propagating across a remote call - the remote caller does not have any
JPA jars and should not depend on the persistence implementation used on
the other side.  Since the JPA exception is wrapped in the
DataAccessException there is a problem when this class is
de-serialized.  Any configuration settings or ready to go solutions for
this, before we write a custom one?

Spring 2.0 is, well, 99.9% backwards compatible. We did clean up some areas
of the framework: Some deprecated features that have been removed or
replaced, but hardly anything that should surprise if you're coming from
1.2.8.

If you happen to use some of those few features that changed, you will
immediately notice on recompiling your application, or on application
startup at the latest. Once the application is up and running, you shouldn't
see any surprises.

Mixing and matching individual Spring jars from different versions is not
supported. If you decide to give Spring 2.0 a try, take all relevant Spring
2.0 jars and drop them into your application: Then recompile, restart and
see what's happening... The chances are high that it's simply gonna work out
of the box.

Also, don't you have to upgrade the application anyway once you deploy new
application features such as JMX notifications? It's usually straightforward
to upgrade the Spring jar in one go then... There is no need to update
Spring for applications that you keep as is; you would just need to update
if a new part actually uses Spring 2.0 features.

I'm afraid that there are no plans to backport the JMX notification support
to the Spring 1.2.x branch. We do plan a 1.2.9 release in the next few
weeks, but that's mainly a maintenance release, with a couple of minor
enhancements backported alongside.

The rationale here is that we do not want to introduce new features to the
1.2 branch that might in turn lead to more maintenance effort there. The 1.2
branch is supposed to be frozen after 1.2.9, with only critical fixes
released later on (if needed).

May I ask why you do not consider simply upgrading to Spring 2.0? In
particular with 2.0.1 out this week, the upgrade path should be as smooth as
possible. You can keep using your existing bean definition files, keep
running on JDK 1.3/1.4, etc.
