This is simply about maintenance and support. We have been supporting JDK
1.3 for a long time, but found it increasingly hard to still provide proper
support for it: Most importantly, many third-party libraries (including
Hibernate, Groovy, even Velocity Tools and JasperReports) require JDK 1.4
now, which made it hard for us to properly test Spring against JDK 1.3 -
having to support old versions of those third-party libraries, etc.
 
Also, JDK 1.3 has been officially end-of-lifed by Sun already; so have all
IBM WebSphere versions that built on JDK 1.3. Official support usually
starts at the JDK 1.4.2 level now (e.g. WebSphere 5.1 or higher).
 
Now that JDK 1.6 has been generally available for half a year, we decided
that it's worth explicitly supporting 1.6 features - and dropping 1.3
support in the course of it. We aim for explicitly supporting the latest
three generations of the JDK: For the entire remaining Spring 2.x branch
(2.1 / 2.2), this will mean JDK 1.4 - 1.6.

What is the advantage of making Spring 2.1 require java 1.4 ?
 
I understand frameworks migrating to Java5 due to multiple language
enhancements, but AFAIK all Java 1.4 enhancements are available on Java 1.3
via optional dependencies or opensource frameworks.

That reminds me - I should have consulted "Effective Java" - Item 1: 
Consider providing static factory methods instead of constructors :)

instead of

I've added named parameter support to the SimpleJdbcTemplate . Combining
this with the ParameterizedBeanPropertyRowMapper, that I committed
recently, and the BeanPropertySqlParameterSource we can now retrieve and
store JavaBeans(TM) to the database without having to write custom code
to populate or retrieve the bean property values.

Here is an example:

        Customer cust = simpleJdbcTemplate.queryForObject(
                "select id, customer_number, name from customer where id
= :id",
                new
ParameterizedBeanPropertyRowMapper<Customer>(Customer.class),
                new MapSqlParameterSource().addValue("id", 5L));

        cust.setName("Thomas");

        int rows = simpleJdbcTemplate.update(
                "update customer set name = :name where id = :id",
                new BeanPropertySqlParameterSource(cust));


I added the named parameter methods to the existing SimpleJdbcTemplate
class rather than creating a new SimpleNamedParameterJdbcTemplate
class.  If you think this would be better split up, let me know.

Could you explain the new requirement for java 1.4 runtime ?

I understant frameworks upgrading to java5 to take advantages of language
enhancements, but AFAIK all java 1.4 features are available on Java
1.3using optional packages or opensource frameworks.

[Springframework-developer] Spring 2.01-m1 POMs released

The Spring 2.1-m1 POMs have been posted.  However, these artifacts  
will not be uploaded to the main Maven repository at http:// 
repo1.maven.org/maven2.  For non-final releases of the Spring  
portfolio, you'll need to use the private repository located at  
'https://svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/springframework/repos/repo- 
snapshots/'.  This location will contain all milestone and release  
candidate releases and only final releases will be posted to the main  
Maven repository.

[Springframework-developer] Spring OSGi 1.0-m2 released

Dear Spring community,

I'm pleased to announce that Spring OSGi 1.0 M2 has been released.

Spring OSGi 1.0 M2 is an update to 1.0 M1 release, fixing compatibility
issues against Spring 2.0.4 along with a simplified Maven configuration
and greatly improved OSGi manifests for Spring jars.


The next release (1.0 M3) will be the last milestone and is scheduled
for end of June/early July.

It should be declared with <optional>true</optional> flag

By the way, most classes from "org.springframework.scheduling" package 
has been moved
from spring-support to spring-context. Dependency:
    <dependency>
      <groupId>com.bea.wlplatform</groupId>
      <artifactId>commonj-twm</artifactId>
      <version>1.1</version>
      <optional>true</optional>
    </dependency>
should be moved from spring-support.pom to string-context.pom

Yes, this is an optional dependency that's been introduced in Spring 2.0.5.
Note that it is optional: It is only really useful for highly concurrent
applications on JDK 1.4. On JDK 1.5 and higher, Spring prefers the JDK's own
java.util.concurrent classes instead.

within a custom parser back to the default Spring beans parsing to

When I debug this, the default namespace for Spring isn't in

I've given up on an out of date tamps beacause it's so time consuming to
stand in line at the Post Office to get 1c stamps. That being said -
it's almost worth the "wine list" price - this spectacular, smooth, red
is great for any occasion - I enjoy it with barbecue, steak, stews and
in a glass.
Unlike the dollar, it's not novel to find these retro stamps - they're
useless! Here comes Calvin Harris out of nowhere - well he probably
didn't come from no where, but he's suddenly appeared with this song,
several remixes, and even a mini-mix on Annie Mac's show.
With a learning Bayesian filter this has the ability to grow with spam
challenges. The amusing preview you may or may not have seen are the
best bits. This movie was something of a visual masterpiece - not in
scene setting (although Tokyo presented some nice back drops) - but in
supped up cars and "drifting" stunts. It was a waste of time, useless,
undesirable movie that just isn't worth seeing. Sit back and enjoy the
ride on this one.
