This is a feature I've already included in jSPMS. It was one of the first things I did for the Crew Roster. I personally use this feature all the t= ime and any revision of SPMS that didn't have it would be less useful to me. -Ed > Thought you guys might like to see some feedback =3D) > > ~Dan > --=20 Fleet Admiral Sorac Dunar CO - USS Constantinople http://ussconstantinople.tranzor.net Bravo Fleet CnC http://www.bravofleet.com/ |

Its already one of the things I have planned for version 4, it was just too much like hard work and not something I wanted myself when I was bevering away on 3. Still, it is nice to get feedback, makes it worth while. ~Dan Adm Robert M Chadwick wrote: >Actually, I'd kind of like to see this happen too. I personally use the Java Code Conventions released by Sun Micro systems. They are very good and very completely written. Well, itsn't this a funny thing. I spent last night working on some ideas for a Java port of SPMS4, I for one would be interested in using a java version of SPMS. Then again, for reasons not entirely public yet I'm rather interested in learning more java stuff (Damn you Ed ;)). I came to a decision myself after a few hours of Java work. Screw it I'm more a PHP Developer than a Java Developer. So it looks like things should mesh together quite well. Its funny you should mention your original intentions for SPMS Ed, because thats exactly why I started on the Version 3 release of SPMS. I wanted it for my own site. It was never meant for public release, it only got put out because people asked. Version 4 will be different, everything I've got floating around my head is because of user feedback. SPMS is heading towards a full content management system, something that absolute newbies can use for thier site without knowing a jot of HTML. At the same time users like Ed, Darian or myself want to be able to use it as a simple template system, or extend it beyond what it was before. Before I get much further in to the design for Version 4 I just need to make sure everyone is aware of the direction it is moving in and to make sure everyone is happy with that. Whether or not the full CMS goes ahead as SPMS 4, I'll end up developing myself. Purely because I want to test my own skills in places, and because I want the challenge. Two other things that crossed my mind last week while I was away at uni, a standard document format for SPMS. Is everyone happy with SPMS' development documentation being created and released in rich text format (or possibly open office format?), I've already sent some stuff to two people who don't use MS Word, so they couldn't open word docs. Secondly, we need some sort of coding guidelines document, so everyone on the team submits code to a specified standard. I've got a draft of one thats been sitting on my HD for many moons, I just wondered if anyone else (Namely you Ed ;)) had one pre-written, or a prefered format to use. ~Dan Fleet Admiral Sorac Dunar wrote: >Well as you both know for reasons that are not yet public I plan to have >a lot more time to simm coming up and I've already reactivated my crew >and I'm up to 10 players now finally. > >With all that said I decided it was time to finish the consty website. >It's still running on my own highly customized version of SPMS 1.x. Well as you both know for reasons that are not yet public I plan to have a lot more time to simm coming up and I've already reactivated my crew and I'm up to 10 players now finally. With all that said I decided it was time to finish the consty website. It's still running on my own highly customized version of SPMS 1.x. So I sat down last night to start updating the look and feel of my site. Thats when I realized something. I really didn't want to have to manually change every page in my site. So I decided that I need a templating engine. I don't really want a complete CMS system, Just a basic templating engine like the one I wrote for TMFSv3. So I sat down to start working on adding it to the old branch. Then I realized something else. That I have completely forgotten some of the basics of PHP. In fact I've forgotten a lot more than most of our COs will ever know about PHP. I found even the basics of PHP difficult to remember. Faced with a few hours to brush up on PHP and SPMS I made a decision. That decision was Screw it I'm a java programmer and that's what My new site will be in. So I spent about 3 hours and I'm most of the way completed with a basic SPMS system that will run on the SPMS1 database completely written in java, using Struts and Tiles. Of course it'll be using JDBC, JavaMail and probably log4J before I'm finished. Ok, Now comes the question, Why? Why Rewrite what Dan is working on when very few people can or will use a java version. Because. Just Because. Ok it doesn't work on my 3 year old either. I'm going to do java because that is what I capable of maintaing at this point and I wanted to learn a bit more about Struts and I've now begun to learn about Tiles from the ground up. Also, as I've said from the beginning. SPMS was never started to be a big OSS project. It was my personal ships website. People asked for it and I gave it to them. I am now redoing my own website, It'll be all java. I'll make as compatible as possible with what Dan is working on, and I hope to have jSPMS final released when Dan releases SPMSv4 Final. I'll be using SF for CVS storage for the project. It just makes sense. It will be completely released under the ASF license since it will rely almost 100% on Apache and Jakarta projects. Anyway, at this point I have all the base templateing completed, and I'll be starting on the manifest, and the join form. First priority is to get them working with my current database first and then to get them working with the v4 DB that dan will be using (I'll work on a DB Conversion script from v1 to v4 at the same time, it is possible just tedious). Well that's it from me. I just wanted to let you guys know what the new repository was that you'll be seeing for our project. -Ed |

Hey folks, I've spent a few days making updates to the 3.X series of SPMS, it crossed my mind what are we going to do about supporting SPMS 3 while SPMS 4 development is under way? Personnaly I'm inclined to keep as much support for SPMS 3 as possible, fix any bugs that appear and tighten up the security on it. There are also a few items of functionality I want to add in, namely the admin pages for the missions page, the quotes database and also an install script. I've been asked already if we'll be porting SPMS 4 ideas in to SPMS 3 from time to time, this isn't something I feel inclined to do. The whole reason for making version for an new program from the ground up is to remove some of the legacy issues that are present in SPMS3 (ie: The manifest, the lack of themes). One of the bigger mistakes I've seen other groups make is removing all support for their current software while developing the next version, this occurred with SMS 1 .2 and with the TRMS software (Nolans copy of SPMS 2). I just wanted to get some feed back from you guys on what you think we should do? ~Dan |

A bit of last minute revision for me saw me testing out Apache Forrest, a site generation system. It uses XML files to store the pages and either displays them dynamically or generates static HTML. I have put together the start of a forrest powered site for SPMS which can be found here http://www.taylord1.co.uk/forrest/ personnally I prefer this over Mambo, for the sort of site we are creating the static and dynamic capabilities of Forrest will suit us well. Please let me know what you guys think of this. ~Dan Fleet Admiral Sorac Dunar wrote: >I agree with those server specs. > >-Ed > >Dan Taylor wrote: > > > >>Ed, >> >>That is my plan so far, the only thing thats currently in code are the >>core classes. Ed, That is my plan so far, the only thing thats currently in code are the core classes. These are all code I'm importing from another project I did this year to save us re-inventing the wheel. This means we have a database API, Theme Class API and Error Logging API already to use for SPMS4 (The phpdocumentor documentation for them will be online when I am finished tweaking the comments.) I've set up some tasks on the sourceforge site detailing what needs to be done and in what order, feel free to add to them or modify them as necessary. They have mainly been written for me by me. I've given over my domain taylord1.co.uk to SPMS Development, I'm not sure Mambo is the correct software for the site. I'm playing around with using Apache Forrest and Apache Lenya to generate the site. As I type this I am preparing to upload some changes to the SPMS3 repositry, I have found a few bugs in the copy of 3.0.3 that need to be fixed. The main changes I'm making are cleaning up some of the admin area code that needed cleaning up this time last year, and updating the application form (Implementing client side validation, and cleaning up the emails which are sent). When my changes are in there, I'll give you and Darian the nod that its ready for another test. Then we can put out a 3.0.4 release (http://serenity.tf72.org/ currently reports as being SPMS 3.0.4 Alpha because I'm implementing these fixes there). So far I've had some feedback from SPMS users regarding my ideas for SPMS4, I'm hoping to generate some community backing for this project. The only way to describe what they have requested is a full content management system. So thats the direction my Version 4 design is heading to. I've had one person step forward and offer thier assistance with a SPMS Documentation Project, to provide user guides for version 4. It's DrDanielJackson from AceIRC, so Darian and I already know him. Once he has a sourceforge account I'm going to add him to the project and give him access to the SourceForge Documentation Manager, once the design is complete we can begin writting the documentation as each section is completed. One thing I do want to throw in the air now is the hosting requirements of SPMS4, I'm aiming for it to be deployed to web servers running PHP 4.X and MySQL 3 or above. Are you and Darian happy with this? I still feel its too early to create PHP5 only software, and most webhosts haven't moved to MySQL 4, so there is little point using the features provided by either. ~Dan Fleet Admiral Sorac Dunar wrote: >Dan, > >I would like for the Requirements listing you are putting together to be >public before we get started on any coding. > >I would like us to have a solid requirements document put together, and >then additionally a solid design document detailing how each of the >requirements will be implemented. they should be two documents and the >three of us as project admins should review both documents before they >are made public. > >Once that is done it makes it easier to assign tasks to other developers >for them to start working on. > >Once you get your thgouhts together start posting them here and we can >work throguh the whole thing. > >-Ed > >Dan Taylor wrote: > > > >>Hey Folks, >> >>As your both aware I've started doing things towards a new version of >>SPMS, despite my leanings towards Java code recently SPMS will >>continue to be a PHP project (However, I have considered a Java Port ;)). >> >>Initially I'm calling this SPMS4 rather than SPMS 3.1, all of the >>version 3 source code and database layout has been dropped. Dan, I would like for the Requirements listing you are putting together to be public before we get started on any coding. I would like us to have a solid requirements document put together, and then additionally a solid design document detailing how each of the requirements will be implemented. they should be two documents and the three of us as project admins should review both documents before they are made public. Once that is done it makes it easier to assign tasks to other developers for them to start working on. Once you get your thgouhts together start posting them here and we can work throguh the whole thing. -Ed Dan Taylor wrote: > Hey Folks, > > As your both aware I've started doing things towards a new version of > SPMS, despite my leanings towards Java code recently SPMS will > continue to be a PHP project (However, I have considered a Java Port ;)). > > Initially I'm calling this SPMS4 rather than SPMS 3.1, all of the > version 3 source code and database layout has been dropped. Hey Folks, As your both aware I've started doing things towards a new version of SPMS, despite my leanings towards Java code recently SPMS will continue to be a PHP project (However, I have considered a Java Port ;)). Initially I'm calling this SPMS4 rather than SPMS 3.1, all of the version 3 source code and database layout has been dropped. I'm re-developing SPMS from the ground up, this is in response to the feedback I've been given by users and because of my own experiences with SPMS. The main aim of the project is to remove a series of security concerns I have with version 3, and to re-build the core of SPMS in to a series of objects. Additionally I am going to be adding functionality beyond that provided by previous versions of SPMS. I tidied up the Sourceforge site a little yesterday, I have disabled CVS access for everyone but us at the moment. While I'm working on the SPMSCore package I would prefer it if I was the only person committing code to the repository, I have set up a CVS ACL which limits commit rights to the three of us (Yeah, we're the only ones on this list right now too, I'll add other people back if they request it). Currently I have a draft requirements list for SPMS4, as I analyse each requirement I'm designing it too. Currently I have a firm design for the SPMSCore Package and for the manifest system, other sections of the system will be designed as a get through the mountain of possible additions and modifications to version 3. As I get further through this I'll send out more updates, because I'm LOA from stuff Thursday and Friday this week I suspect I'll have most of the Core written (hotel rooms are lonely places ;)) ~Dan |
