I know the account owner, and he doesn't want the account anymore.. besides that, the account has never posted, so there shouldn't be any conflict. It seems that if I choose a user with comments in the database, all of the anonymous comments become owned by that account. It's not much of an issue anyways, since the Vice President of Student Affairs at the University of Utah mandates that I DO NOT allow anonymous posting. I disobey the administration and not only do I find myself without a site within a few hours, but I find myself facing expulsion before the student behavioral committee. They have made it very clear that they have zero tolerance for my reckless lawsuit magnet, AKA-- SOS. Making crapflooders sign up for accounts gives them a false sense of security, so ..oh well. In the end, I went back to the unmodified script, since I wasn't encountering a problem with stories with null aid's. I'm hopefully getting close to a solution. I'm debating on dumping the stories out of the database and transfering them to the new database. Half of my authors are missing, even though I set all of the aid's to correspond with a nickname in the users table. I set the matchname's too .. but should I set these to all lowercase with no spaces? (I.E. Sleepless Student --> sleeplessstudent) Of particular interest, I originally changed the passwords of all default uid's 1 - 6 when I installed slash, but I decided to make uid 1 my account a little late in the game. I was originally #9 as flikx. flikx(9) became flikx.(9), (notice the '.' just like Bruce Perens.)and author1 became flikx(1). I didn't think this affected anything, but I'm having doubts now. > Have a good weekend... Yeah, thanks. I try. /Dan Flickinger -- One future, two choices. Oppose them or let them destroy us. |

YMMV, but on RedHat and Mandrake, I always _uninstall_ all perl rpms, and then install perl from source as the first step. use 'rpm -e --nodeps perl' and 'rpm -e --nodeps perl-base'.. there may be others, check with 'rpm -qa | sort' and uninstall anything perl. Get perl as 'stable.tar.gz' from cpan.org, and build just as the INSTALL file suggests. Then install mod_perl, apache and mysql from source as directed. That always gives me a clean build, and 'install Bundle::Slash' gives me no problems. Nothing ill should come from you removing the binary perl distribution from redhat, as long as you don't try to reboot without perl installed on the machine. I think the initscripts need perl, as well as others. On Friday 11 May 2001 20:40, you said: > I tried to install slashcode for a new site I'm dreaming up. Hi, I have just entered a project using (a slightly modified) slash as a forum, and encountered some problems with paging of comments. (just user.commentlimit comments on each page) This works ok with a threaded view, but when switching to a flat view - the limit only works for the toplevel comments. I've tried to read up on the code, but I'm still lost... Does anyone here know what might be causing this? Any wild speculations? --=20 Eld p=E5 =E5ren og sol p=E5 eng gjer mannen fegen og fj=E5g. I tried to install slashcode for a new site I'm dreaming up. I run Redhat 7.0 with little in the way of upgrade. I've installed Apache 1.3.19, Perl was installed by default on RedHat, I also got perl_mod installed, but when trying to use cpan it upgraded my Perl. Well all well and fine but slashcode wouldn't install. It fails when I "install Bundle::Slash" . cpan fails on Apache::Cookies. So I "install Apache::Cookies" and get an error when cpan tries to make all in /.cpan/build/libapreq-0.31/c. I manually downloaded the libapreq module and installed but that fails due to a missing link in /usr/local/share called missing. What is my problem here? by the by I really like the Slashcode format. I'm trying to build a REAL community news for my city. I think the Slash format would be great to keep up on current local events. Thanks all, Jay |

Hi everyone: A newbie question: I just installed slashcode and playing with it (2.0.0.pre3). I found it weird that each page is shown duplicated between the header and the footer (two identical pages with junk codes in between)? Does anyone know why? (It may have something to do with me logging in as the administrator.?). Another question, every time I made some changes, I had to refresh it several times to see the results, on some pages, refreshing many times make no difference. Why? Another related question, I changes the variables, like the sitename and .... But I don't see it make obvious difference after refreshing the pages several times. If I go the another machine and pull up the web site, some time(!!!!, not always) it reflects the changes that I made, like the site name. I was very frustrated. Please help, gurus. P.S. Actually I really enjoy playing slashcode, it is knida addictive. Thank you. I don't think I have any stories with no authors, but I have one problem. The second story on the site (about a tuition increase) .. one of my new authors manually changed the date of the story instead of using the 'fast forward' checkbox. This miffed me when the story lost over half of it's comments when the comments archived two months later into oblivion. Could this create a problem. A few questions, I have been RTFM'ing BTW. I had started out with plans to upgrade my site to Slash 2.0.0 , but thanks to a SCSI drive scuttling on me, it looks like I'm going to install a new clean 2.0.0 site, then work to get my old database upgraded to work with the new site. Anyways, I had a few questions: Is there any more documentation for the slash1toslash2 script? Something was goofy with my existing DB, and the script fails near the end. I had a clean initialized DB for 2.0.0, and an unaltered DB for my old 1.0.9 Slashsite. A little persistence may fix this, but are there any common problems I should be aware of? I had no problem creating the database from backup. Though I'm wondering if there is a quicker way. Using 'mysql -u blah -p blah < slashdb.dump' takes forever. Concerning httpd.conf, are there any examples available? I know to include the .conf file in the new slash distribution. It seems simple enough, but it would help to see some examples; especially since I do not want to run my site on a virtual host. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.. thanks... /dan flickinger http://sos.asuu.utah.edu -- One future, two choices. Oppose them or let them destroy us. |

Still having problems.. These are the steps I did: make make install --> implies it will overwrite my template directory which was why I thought I didn't have to do anything extra, oh well template-tool -u VIRTUAL_USER -d --> got a directory full of templates template-check -u VIRTUAL_USER --> got a list of files that were different than template template-tool -u VIRTUAL_USER -s LIST --> gave me some messages saying it did something now I deleted the directory and reran template-tool -u VIRTUAL_USER -d and template-check -u VIRTUAL_USER to see if the changes took place. But it listed the same files as the first time I ran it, though it appears the search page had a cosmetic change when I went to see if it worked.. went into mysql and made the mod to journal_user_count and search_default_display as it said added the extra plugins and themes with template-tool and it gave me some message saying it did went into search and tried it again, got the same error. My apache log shows--> [error] Undefined subroutine &Apache::ROOTdcengr_2ecom::search_2epl::fixint called at /usr/local/slash/site/dcengr.com/htdocs/search.pl line 184. what am I doing wrong? thanks -----Original Message----- From: sla...@li... There is no prealpha 1. You mean pre1? If you upgraded from pre1, and you read the instructions, and make / make install is all you did, then you either didn't read or didn't follow the instructions. Both README and INSTALL are very clear. README says INSTALL contains upgrade instructions, and INSTALL has the upgrade instructions, and they involve more than just running make. Please read, and follow, the upgrade instructions in INSTALL. http://slashcode.com/docs/INSTALL.html#upgrading -- Chris Nandor pu...@po... http://pudge.net/ Open Source Development Network pu...@os... http://osdn.com/ _______________________________________________ Slashcode-general mailing list Sla...@li... http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/slashcode-general |
