I swear I answer this once a week to someone ;) Issue Mode and Article Mode is a feature that I never really used on Slashdot. It was based on the idea that some publications are "Article" based: Slashdot for exmaple. Each article is a single unit, and there really is no connection between them. Other publications are "Issue" based... say, Time magazine. An "Issue" is a bunch of articles, connected by the day that they were released. The intent behind this was to allow Slash to have more flexible homepage layout for "Issue" based publications, as well as improved navigation tools for finding other articles that are all in the same issue. None of that was every fully implemented. Really, the only thing that article mode and issue mode affect is the Older Stuff box. Article Mode creates the link to "Older Articles" and Issue Mode creates the link to "Yesterday's News". Hope that makes sense. -- Rob "CmdrTaco" Malda | ma...@sl... | http://CmdrTaco.net 'Sometimes when I pick up the guitar, I'm stunned at how well I play. I had originally sent this before the mailing lists failed, and have never received a response to my questions.. the questions are fairly trivial, though the solutions do not seem to be immediate to me. Please give me a few pointers... thanks... /flikx ===========[original message]========================= From: dan flickinger <fl...@xm...> To: sla...@li... I.E. main authors (core group), site section authors, temp. authors, and others? I usually have my authors with a level of about 500 or so. At what thresholds do certain features activate, and can this be changed? In short, what are good levels for my core group of authors (to access story submissions, post to the front page, etc.), and site section authors (that only need to check section submissions and post stories.) (2) Site sections What exactly is the difference between article based and issue based? (or should this be obvious?) Also, is it worth the effort to have the appearance of site sections be drastically different from the rest of the site? I have a few departments that want to make their site section look more like their own web page. At bare minimum, which block do I need to change in order to get each section to have a logo at the top right? (like on slashdot) (3) Never-ending stories Is there a way to post a story in a section that never/seldom gets updated or moves, yet still retains the ability to post to said story? Like a "secret" sid.. is there a way to make a story appear at the top of a secret sid? It's not a big deal to lose comments after the normal period, though I would like to have a couple "stories" (for site help, etc.) stay there for good. Is there any way to do this? If this requires a few SQL commands, I'm up for it. Thanks... /dan flickinger flikx (on slashdot, SOS, and elsewhere) http://sos.asuu.utah.edu -- One future, two choices. This would explain and confirm a weird problem I had too, with all the bender perl modules being installed in /usr/local/slash/lib/perl5 . I moved the files into the right places by hand, assuming I had bungled something. |

Yes. I think what happened is that we didn't think through this well enough. Part of it may be that one or all of us are not very clued on Makefiles. At least, I know I am not. To the point: we use PREFIX to say where to install the slash directory, normally set to /usr/local/slash/. Perl uses PREFIX to say where to install the modules. Apparently, the PREFIX gets passed down to the Perl Makefiles (duh, I suppose). Solution: I think we should use something other than PREFIX for /usr/local/slash. I can fix this, I think. Although I am not sure if this will fix the problem, exactly. I am concerned that perhaps not all the scripts will work properly with PREFIX of other than /usr/local/slash. So here is my idea: please go back to your slash installation directory. Do "cd Slash". Then do "perl Makefile.PL". Then do "make", and "make install". This should install the modules in the correct place. Then please test everything out (what you can; especially stuff like install-slashsite, slashd, portald, etc.) and report back; if it works for you, then the fix is just to change PREFIX to something else. I am sorry for asking to put this burden on you, but I do not have time in the next few days to set up and test a new install; if you don't get a chance, that's OK; I can try sometime next week. Info: Suse 6.2 comes with fileutils version 3.16 (install --version), which fails to install bender. I got an RPM from Suse6.3: fileutil-4_0-28_i386.rpm install --version now says: version 4.0, and 'make install' works (almost). Hi, I'm running SuSE 6.2. When I 'make install' I get an error that says something like: install -D : unknown option. When I 'man install', I see a -d option, but no -D. I'm using gnu make 3.77. Any hint ? Can you tell me what -D is supposed to do ? Thanks in advance. --JPM |
