I've added a Win/Loss/Draw feature to the crosstable (in subversion). It's pretty handy actually :) At the end of the line for Swiss and All-Play-All crosstables, the win/loss/draw results are shown in brackets. Someone requested it, but i can't find where/who, so thanks for the idea. This code is a little messy, but hopefully there's no bugs. Steve |

Hi Pipa, > I am new at Scid user list and I have two questions. > 1) How you configure the Scid sounds so each time the computer move a chess piece I hear a move sound. Sounds are configured in Options->Sounds, (and also Options->Fics->Sounds). Today i added an option to "Play tick-tock instead of move" to the main sound widget (in svn). Perhaps this is what you wish ? The tick-tock sound (until today, only played only in FICS) is ok, but a little long imho... Does anyone have a nice (free) short sound to replace this tick-tock with ? > 2) When I try to load the sound files of the Sound folder, a popup appear announcing the folder have only 29 sound files of a total of 30 files? What happen withe missing file? Hmmm - the missing sound is only used by dedicated hardware such as is configured in the Tools->Connect Hardware. But it should be included in the next release. PS. Sound is partially broke on my 64 bit Fed14 system. It only plays back every second move. I believe this is a linux/snack/64bit issue, and have added a note and a workaround to the help file for any others affected. Steve |

Hello, Is there a way to automatically analyze (annotate using a chosen engine, i.e. stockfish) a PGN file using scidvspc from command line (on Linux), I mean without using the GUI? I noticed a binary named "tcscid" when I compiled scidvspc. Thanks for you help, Lior |

Thanks for the feedback. Here's a new snapshot. The two files enclosed should be placed in the "bin" directory of the 4.7.1 windows release. http://sourceforge.net/projects/scidvspc/files/windows-beta/scidvspc-20120206.zip/download There's been a few changes to FICS, and a random sort feature. The gamelist can be scrolled by the page with Control+WheelMouse (untested). I've also placed the help files online. They still need a few buttons, but are otherwise complete. http://scidvspc.sourceforge.net/doc/Contents.htm Steve |

Using your favourite games list ( have 6000+ games of my favourite opening), try going through them in some order, I sort mine by length, hoping to find opening traps. It went well (and gave me a few chuckles about how many times black resigned on losing Q for bishop on move 8) until I got to page two. The problem is that the games list repositions itself at the top of the list each time one opens a game. It's going to be seriously tedious by the time I get to game 300, still only 17 moves. Ad to that the fact that the list scrolls by one game, not a page, for each mouse click on the scroll bar. Linux, built from SVN yesterday. -- Santa |

The game's worth examining, I found the endgame pretty impressive. -- Santa |

I think it would be a good idea to separate the autoplay time delay from the engine annotation value for time per move. When one does engine analysis (annotations) and sets the value for time between moves it requires the user to change the autoplay time delay when replaying games later as they seem to be using the same variable. Hmmm - I can reproduce this. But do you have the 3 piece gtbs installed ? Try installing them and see if it makes any diff. They may be needed. Okay. I downloaded all of the Gaviota table bases to my mac and placed them in a /gtb directory under my critter_14 directory. The critter_14 directory contains the engine. I have set my GaviotaTbPath to in the critter configuration window to /gtb. I have set my Tablebase Usage to Everywhere. When I setup a simple endgame position (KnbK) and run critter the information for the running engine indicates TB Hits: 0 which tells me that it is not finding or using the tablebases and the analysis just keeps running without finding mate. Does anyone have the same issue or has tried this on a mac? Would appreciate any help in this regard. Peter |

There's a new windows snapshot up at SF http://scidvspc.sourceforge.net/tmp/scidvspc-20120506b.tar.bz2 Notable features include - opening files with Drag and Drop (the drop targets are the gameinfo and switcher widgets), Custom board textures (open board options and press F1 for help and move the jpegtcl1.0 directory to Scid vs PC/lib to get jpeg tiles to work), and really tieing down the new fics stuff. FICS includes moving the clock to the main board where it's much more visible, and being able to properly use the fics examine feature. There's a few new options in Options->FICS Other changes include: Analysis output can also be toggled between wrapping words / no-wrap by right clicking the widget, and in tournaments there's a new "Permanent thinking (Ponder)" feature, we dont' kill tournament if engine crashes, and Xboard engines time control should work much better. Much thanks to Gregor for coding the Drag'n'Drop feature, which was a lot of work. Steve |

Two questions : - The Status Bar of the analysis window seems to be absent and the right mouse click doesn't hide the move previsions. Is it normal (scidvspc for mac 4.7) ? - Is there a way to display the move previsions in column style in the analysis window, especially when using the multi-PV mode ? |

I've made an errata update for windows. http://sourceforge.net/projects/scidvspc/files/windows/Scid%20vs%20PC-4.7.1.exe/download The previous config file had some gremlins, which this fixes. The download is marked 4.7.1, but otherwise it is still 4.7 - except for the inclusion of the new tournament "Permanent Thinking" feature (UCI ponder-on and Xboard easy/hard). Also, i recently realised that the labeling of the "Time-per-game" spinboxes was confusing. The Minutes and Seconds entries are in fact Base Time(Minutes), Increment Time(Seconds). I hope no-one else was confused, and will make the labels better for the next release. Steve |

I had an interesting request in search pattern feature in it.hobby.scacchi.it (italian chess newsgroup). Is possible to filter games with material for example 6P + 1R vs 6P+1R where is possible to select the majority Q or K side for 1 of the colours. Is possible to select an Eco opening where all games are filtered by long or short castle? ty enrico ^^ ciao! |

Does anyone still mess with Xboard engines ? They're not as strong as the modern UCI engines. I've made a couple of improvements to the tournament feature and some xboard engines should behave much better. Changes are in subversion. cheers, Steven The technical details are - The Xboard protocol is a little harder to grasp than UCI, and it turns out i had a serious inaccuracy in the order of the time and move commands. I issued move/times, when the expected order is times/move. (UCI gets around this issue by issuing the move/times commands altogether in the one line). The other interesting bug relates to draw and resign declarations. Xboard engines are very *cute*. They can resign, and also declare draws for insufficient material, etc. (UCI engines generally rely on the GUI to do these things). But the problem was they did so immediately after making a move. Engine: move h6h7 Engine: 1-0 {Black resigns} I hadn't examined this closely before, and it screwed up the control mechanism. (The opposing player is told to make a move, but since the game becomes finished in the meantime, his move is never processed, causing a vwait to hang forever). Anyway - i'm enjoying seeing some of these obscure engines play properly now :) Scid vs. PC (1 minute + 0 seconds) ?, 2012.03.05 Score 1 2 3 --------------------------------------- 1: Gully 5.0 / 8 XXXX 0==1 0111 2: Sjeng 5.0 / 8 1==0 XXXX 0111 3: Marvin 2.0 / 8 1000 1000 XXXX --------------------------------------- 12 games: +2 =2 -8 |

Yes, there was a bug. When the user enters their login in a different case to their actual fics name some things - notably playing a game - didn't work properly. This should be fixed in subversion, and the new fics.tcl is attached.
