Hi I've been playing 10 minute games, and there's been quite a few that I've lost on time, and I'd like to get better at taking winning positions and converting them to wins within X minutes, etc. I'd like to know if there's a feature in ScidVsPC to turn on a timer when you're playing against an engine -- for example, start at a certain position with 2 minutes on the clock. Thanks, and great job with the improvements you've made on Scid. --Nate |

Hi Aleksandar > Scid vs pc is Great Program! > However,Most of the games on FICS are played on 3 0 tempoand > without premove option program can't be uses succesfully for > playing that kind of games Ok - thanks for prodding me. Enrico has been hassling me about this too, and yesterday I figured out how to make premove without much hassle :) I'd thought about it before, but hadn't found the nicest solution... Scid is such a huge thing. I've reinstated the <Control-ButtonPress-1> binding for drawing arrows on the main board, and this is now available for premove. All you do is hold down the control key, and click on the FROM square, then the TO square. A green arrow will be drawn. (These arrows can be drawn all the time, but they only have a special premove meaning while playing fics). To cancel the premove, press the "escape" key. These changes are in subversion, which isn't too hard for Linux users - just see the scidvspc homepage for instructions. Windows users will have to find a subversion client, check out the subversion, then use the "make-scidgui.bat" utility to compile a new "scid.gui". Sorry for not posting a new scid.gui, but my internet connection isn't the best. Anyway - please play test this. Steve |

Hi, Scid vs pc is Great Program! However, Most of the games on FICS are played on 3 0 tempo and without premove option program can't be uses succesfully for playing that kind of games Program is excellent for slower games like 3+2 and so on.. Will be premove option be included in some future? Tnx |

You're probably using wish (tcl/tk) 8.5.10 , which has a nasty bug affecting many ttk widgets. Have a look in the About window. If so, you'll have to install another wish. 8.5.9 and 8.5.11 are fine. The latest, 8.5.12, also has a silly issue that breaks Scid vs PC 4.7, but should be affect 4.8. Hi, i downloaded in arch the targz from sourceforge.svn and it works properly (i had a problem with tcl tk latest version, i ask if possible to add a message when you run timeseal the first time (timeseal not found) or in alternative, to add directly the path /.../scidvspc/timeseal/timeseal.linux directly as a default this is for newbies... no timeseal and no message just: impossible to connect if you can add something like timeseal not found... or add the timeseal path ... it would be nice. ciao & grazie |

The option for digital clock in scidvspc 4.8 is Options->FICS->Digital Clock To see whose move it is, Options->Game Information->Show Side to Move , which is not quite the same as clock highlighting, but works ok for me. Received: Sunday, 12 August, 2012, 6:53 AM I am a long time FICS/Babaschess player (fics id = jadube and mostly play blitz). I am new to scidvspc. I am interested in scidvspc for the training/education features, and FICS play. For FICS play, I would prefer a digital clock next to the board as shown in my babaschess screenshot. If there's no major bugs with these, i'll release them on the weekend. Steve Source http://sourceforge.net/projects/scidvspc/files/source/scid_vs_pc-4.8.tgz/download Windows http://sourceforge.net/projects/scidvspc/files/windows/Scid%20vs%20PC-4.8.exe/download OS X http://sourceforge.net/projects/scidvspc/files/mac/ScidvsMac-4.8.dmg/download Changes: 4.8 (August 12, 2012) General Drag and Drop file open(s) on Windows and Unix Custom background images (jpegs, gifs and pngs) Random sort pgn feature. Crosstable now have +/-/= subtotals (and Player Stats format changed from +/=/- to +/-/=). General PGN search has ignore case option Board Search gets it's combobox updated when DBs are opened and closed. Save game before PGN Import Save game: enable the use of 'prev game tags' for existing games. This allows easy addition of the same tags to consecutive existing games. Remove the 'Scid: ' prefix from several window titles Update some translations Show Linux version/distro in the startup window. Add a patch to make toolbar buttons raise only (instead of toggle open/shut) Add a patch for Chess960 support (from Ben Hague). Unfinished Analysis UCI: properly handle UCI buttons. Previously they were invoked at every engine restart. Right clicking 'Add Var' button adds Engine Score comment only. Replace ponder on/off with hard/easy for xboard engines Super quick engine infos can happen before Scid's PV is inited properly. So we have to default to PV = 1 Allow xboard engines to use lowercase 'b' for bishop promotion (eg a7b8b) Don't send an erroneous 'isready' (with 'uci') to quiet analysis engines Right clicking the widget allows to disable line wrapping Don't add a line to analysis history if moves are null Tree Move ECO stats to the end of line. Several Mask refinements - notably Searches are much more readable and previously clicking on searched lines didn't work Fix up minor bugs about castling moves (OO, O-O, O-O-O) Computer Tournament Computer Tournament Book feature Dont' kill tournament if engine crashes. Only pack the first 10 engine combos (which allows for big tournaments) Fix up Xboard time/move command order. Xboard engines should behave much better. Various other tweaks Gamelist Show altered games in red. Control-wheelmouse scrolls up/down one page. Switcher now has text on two lines (if icons are shown). FICS Digital clocks now (optionally) on the main board Better integration of FICS "examine" and "observe" features FICS has it's own options menu bind F9 to xtell instead of tell. Change the move.wav sound from tick-tock to a short click. OS X Filter graph bugfix Material Search properly shows the little buttons Copy and Paste text from disabled OSX text widgets (engines, help, gameinfo) Buttons 2 and 3 are swapped around General Bugs Work arounds for wish 8.5.12 and 8.5.8 issues Analysis logs can badly break autoscroll, so use normal frames and scrollbars. Handle PGN parsing of unspecified promotions (b8 becomes b8=Q , for eg). |

Just a quick heads up about some new stuff. The gamelist now displays the current game in red if it has been altered (and the gameAltered flag is unset/reset according to undo/redo). The computer tournament has a "Use book" feature for UCI engines. This allows for much more varied tournaments. And i got stuck into tweaking the mask feature this weekend. The Mask is a powerful feature but the important 'Mask Search' was mostly unreadable before. It's looking much tidier now, and there's been a couple of minor bug fixes. Notably 'Search Click' is now working. Code is in subversion only, but i should be making a proper 4.8 release inside a month. Steve |

Thereafter, they only need updates. With ADSL and better in the hands of most, it only takes a few minutes to download the TWIC games, most time is spent figuring out which ones need to be fetched to update the database (if you're as disorganised as I am), downloading the new files, unzipping them and adding them. If someone creates a "high quality" database, it might actually not be the one I want. Katar's USCF rating is, I think, over 2000. My Australian rating is about 1400. I've never beaten anyone over 2000 Australian (although I've been close a couple of times), I can learn from games from that level, so Katar prunes more games than I ever would. Last week I played a game that started 1 e4 g6 2 d4 bg7 3 h4. 3h4 is an idea of Fisher, there aren't many games in my database to look at, 50 I think. While there was one game with both rated over 2600 FIDE, many were FM level or lower. Those games, of little interest to Katar, were very useful to me. I went through the old mailing list articles about TWIC and direct downloads, and have started to think it would be "fair enough" to have a direct download feature. It's in chessdb's menu, and users can choose to use it or not. chessdb can also download from arbitrary places. Have a look at chessdb to properly understand what I am talking about. <rant> I don't really like direct replies, and for most lists I'm on it's not possible for people to reply directly. By replying directly you ensure others don't see what you say and group conversations become conversations between individuals. Some of my email addresses are just for use on mailing lists, and I use firewall rules to ensure that those addresses can only be reached from their servers. </rant> <rant> While I'm in the mood, I might mention I generally abhor those who combine their replies to several emails into one missive. Many people use the subject line to decide whether to read messages posted to mailing lists. Most current email client programs can link messages comprising a conversation into a single thread, and users can choose to just see the head message in the thread in their inbox (or other folder). For these reason, when I report a problem or pose a question, I choose "Compose" or the like, and send a single message for each matter. If people combine their replies into one message, or choose a "Reply" option and then remove all irrelevant text, this threading breaks down and people might not see messages they would ordinarily read. If you're asking for help this can mean people able to answer won't see your question, and if you're trying to help you assistance might be missed. </rant> Katar (I don't think he's here) created some videos on using SCID. He would most likely be very interested in directly downloading from within SCID/SCID as it's very much easier than the technique he demonstrated. On Linux, I use lynx, awk and wget to get all the PGN files, and it takes me just a couple of minutes plus download time, but I expect most people use firefox, internet exploder or the like and click several hundred links. chessdb can parse the TWIC list and download all the PGN files, much as I can using lynx etc. It can also just get those files needed to update one's database. -- Santa |

One observes games in progres, and the going back and forth is implemented in every other FICS interface I've used including SCID, Eboard, Xboard. It's true they all advance to the current position when the relay reports a move, and it's also true that regularly SCID gets very confused, regularly losing the moves history and, instead, starting with a FEN position. Eboard implements the back and forward FICS commands so one can just use its navigation buttons and keyboard combinations to navigate whether observing or examining. -- Santa |

Importing games directly from TWIC has been discussed on the Scid mailing list. It's certainly a handy feature, but IIRC the consensus was that TWIC does't encourage automated direct downloads, and i suppose we should respect this. Does anyone have a more informed opinion :) ? For more help about FICS, type "help observe" and "help examine". Steve |

chessdb, another SCID fork, can download and import games directly, not just from TWIC, but from other sites too. It's a useful feature that might be easily incorporated (ie copied from chessdb). -- Santa |

To answer this question, I clicked help/About. The "about" details are fairly old. I suggest you provide more fine-grained details, especially for those who build from SVN. I further suggest you update the version information each time you checkin, and further qualify it with the build time in UTC. Then, when someone provides that information, you can easily check whether it's built from the latest source. -- Santa |

I logged onto FICS, started observing a game. I have no controls so I can't go back and forth in the game, or flip the board etc. Just to be sure, I ran an svn && make && sudo make install Problem persists. -- Santa |

I've uploaded my (modest) personal database of international games here http://sourceforge.net/projects/scidvspc/files/support%20files/sa_database.tar.bz2/download Have a look at windows->tournament_finder. Middle clicking on a tournament will open the crosstable for it. There are some huge free databases around the place, including Icofy and Million base. I have also changed the Player Information window to display data in a similar way - ie +win / -loss / =draw instead of +win / =draw / -loss. It's not a major change, but could also use some testing.
