That works well, but I was hoping for a way to keep the default sorted descending (latest at the top) rather than oldest first. If it's a feature worth adding, maybe point me to the place in the code where I can look? I'm might tinker with it (not familiar with the codebase). Once a database is sorted, it is always that way. (Though this does not apply to pgn files or read-only databases). If you sort by date, after re-opening the database it will still be sorted, but the little triangle on the date column heading will not be shown. See the sort help topics. Alternatively , you may also wish to set a database to autoload the last game (Maintenance window->Autoload game) S.A. I think the problem is you are now trying to open a mask that was created in ScidvsPC-4.14, in ScidvsPC-4.13 or earlier . If this is not the case, please email me directly, Or you can edit the mask file directly and replace all 'tb_help_small' with 'tb_help' Unfortunately, the question image is a new one. And backward compatability is something i have failed to consider fully... but the mask format is a little badly designed here too. Hi Steve and everbody In principle I want to thank you, Steve, for the extraordinary software. I'm working in Windows 8.1 64bit with 8GB of memory.Several years ago I enjoy using Scid vs PC program in the 32bit version first and 64bit now. I was happy to receive much 64bit version 4.14 and that the program is being overcome. I make constant use of the utility of the "tree mask" and so far with no major problems. But... In this latest version, 4.14 64bit, I receive this message when I came back to any enter (in any, not in all) without knowing when and how the problem was produced ======================================== image "tb_help_small" doesn't exist image "tb_help_small" doesn't exist while executing "$w.f.tl image create end -image $img -align center" (procedure "displayLines" line 83) invoked from within "displayLines $baseNumber $moves" (procedure "::tree::dorefresh" line 51) invoked from within "::tree::dorefresh $i" (procedure "::tree::refresh" line 13) invoked from within "::tree::refresh" (procedure "updateBoard3" line 51) invoked from within "updateBoard3 0" ("after" script) ======================================= I received not when I create the enter but when sometime I came back to him. I thank you for your work and your help. Arie |

Hi, Im using Scid vs. PC 4.14 x64 on Windows 8.1. Im trying to practice my endgame play by setting up a position, e.g. 8/8/8/6k1/1N6/8/8/K6B w - - 0 1, and playing against an engine. Unfortunately, after a few moves by both sides, Scid vs. PC consistently crashes (the number of moves before a crash seems to vary). Ive only seen this happen when playing against UCI engines, because Phalanx always resigns in lost endings :). Cheers, Ralph |

Mac does have some focus niggles that Linux and Windows don't. The control window (and all undocked windows) can be raised by pressing the "Raise Windows" button (right most button in the main buttonbar). Additionally, OS X has a feature you may not now about. Click and hold down on the docked Scid icon. After a while a menu will appear that shows all submenus of Scid, from which you may select the tacgame control window. Kevin wrote > To get the focus back to the window I have to move the mouse pointer off the current window and then back onto it. Yes... ScidvsPC does really a little heavily on having focus on the main board, and OS X focus is hard to pin down. Perhaps i can extend the scope of some shortcut keys, but it needs thorough testing. cheers. |

The only window issue I have on Mac is that the window focus often disappears when using keyboard shortcuts, for instance when entering moves. To get the focus back to the window I have to move the mouse pointer off the current window and then back onto it. This behavior is pre-4.14. I haven't installed 4.14 yet. Hi all, I’ve just installed SCIDVSPC on mac Yosemite : No problem all is Ok. Many thanks Steve for this new version. As we talked previously, it should be great to work on a better behavior of the windows on Mac. I tried to play with : tactics and tactic game -> control windows disappear after the first move, I need to resize SCID to see it again, did I do something wrong ? Do all mac users meet the same difficulties ? Cheers. |

Have just install SCID vs PC v4.14 on Ubuntu 14.10. Installed flawlessly, and immediately I notice the much clearer pieces on the screen. Two quick games on FICS, and can see the close button for games graph. Now going to learn how to enter all my Over the board games into a database for analysis and long term recording. Here are the 4.14 release candidates and changelog. (if some of the links are bad, just have a look in the project files section) I'm keen on the new Tree Mask usability improvements. They're kindof modest, but make using it much easier, and i'll probably have a go at making a proper opening mask/repetoire even. Tactical game (Updated Phalanx) is a real challenge now, and piece dragging in the setup board is a no-brainer that should have been done 10 years ago. The End-position only addition to the material search is handy too. Holding Control while opening the Mask context menu (marker/nags/color) adds a marker to the whole line (etc). Make Mask moves easier to see, and tweak menus. Board Setup Enable piece dragging Flip the setup board if main is flipped. Make 'Clear Setup board' have Kings. Searches Add End-Position-Only option to Material Search. Knight+Bishop sanity check was wrong, and we werent saving Knight+Bishop joint totals in saved searches. Tweak the other-base combobox in Board Search. Hello I am using Windows 7 I found: Scid vs PC-4.13/bin/lang/portbr.tcl I did open it and I am already editing it with WordPad. Is this correct? Language used in Portugal and Brazil differ more in oral language than in text and more in popular/informal language than in technical, academic language. When we consider the text in chess books it can be hard to tell if it was published/translated in Portugal or Brazil. I have the Brazilian Edition of the Smyslov 125 best games (a true gem, let me say) and one can hardly extract the tropical flavour of its language. I see that, for some reason, the Portuguese Brazilian translation don't use the accented characters of the language: It write Opcoes in place of Opções and Posicao in place of Posição. But I see that French and Spanish translations (two languages I know perfectly well, having studied French for seven years...) use the accented characters with absolute no trouble: posición, información (Spanish), fenêtre, pièce (French). I will use the accented characters (by the Grammar). So, since I don't want to change too much the Brazil Portuguese version and I am not Brazilian myself I will do a Portuguese version. When I get the file done (port.tcl) I will send it to Steve A e-mail address. I don't know about the differences in the languages, so you are welcome to update the existing one (which hasn't been done for a long time), or make a new one - whichever you prefer. It's probably easiest if you just alter tcl/lang/portbr.tcl with your changes, then i will commit them, or create a new translation from your file (if you think this is best). thanks, S. |

I could do a Portuguese language translation, or just revise the Brazilian Portuguese if that is not being cared about. If there is enough interest in it and I get the instructions and it is not too technically demanding. I would prefer to be anonymous translator ("martinus" at FICS). I am a teacher since 1989, I know the language enough. Portuguese, I mean... |

Ok. In subversion there is a new option Tree->Options->Auto Load Mask which will load the most recent mask file. I am pretty sure i want to add the functionality of the (recently added) Book Tuning "Add Line to Book" feature, as "Add Line to Mask." but am not quite sure how/when. cheers |

I think a lot of people have spent a lot of time struggling with the old repertoire and mask features trying to get something like Chess Position Trainer functionality out of the various SCIDs over the years, without much success. Here are some thoughts about how this might be approached in a totally different way. SCIDvsPC already has the ability to apply the tree from one database to the games of another. So, you don't actually need a special repertoire or mask file. To get the same effect, you just need a database that contains only the repertoire lines. You could almost do this now but creating such a "database of lines" is a pain. It looks like this should be easy when you first look at the Tree window but it isn't. The speed of the Tree Window contributes to this impression because it makes it look like the tree is persistent data rather than calculated on the fly. The first obstacle everyone encounters is that the tree window isn't editable - you can't add and delete moves ('prune the tree') directly. The second problem is that as you browse the Tree, you can't see comments and NAGs at the current position because only one game is loaded at a time. My suggestion would be to create a special database that holds only moves, comments and NAGs. Even the usual PGN headers are irrelevant as we are not storing real games, just lines. Similarly, there is no need for variations - each line is stored as a separate game. At any given position when the user adds a move, check if we are at the end of an existing game/line - if so append the move and save. If not, automatically create a new game that includes the moves to this point and then adds the new move and saves. Transpositions are irrelevant as the tree effectively hides this anyway. The important point is that this is still just a regular SCID base but you are exploiting the speed of the Tree functionality to make it look like something quite different. This "Repertoire" could have a special extension to prevent it being opened as a regular database even though it really is just a simple DB. The difficult part is that this would require a whole new interface window that borrows features from the existing Tree, PGN and Comments windows. You would need to create an "Edit Repertoire Tree" window that would allow the user to step forwards and backwards through the "tree" and display/edit moves, comments and NAGs at the current position. It would also need to provide the ability to add and delete moves. You don't need to show any of the statistics from the current tree window, nor do you need to show a game list. |

Hello all. Thank you for Scid vs PC. I am chess amateur since 1978 (I am "martinus" on FICS), don't have programming skill, just a lot of practice with chess software since the 1980's. I did subscribe to say a word about "Mask". I see Mask as being one of the most original and interesting Scid features. I would let it stay in tree window where it belongs (same place where something of the kind exist in Shredder Chess and Sigma Chess). By now, there is just one thing I would like to see improved in the Mask, that is the ability to have my chosen Mask opening automatically very time I open a tree. Best Regads, Valente Silva (martinus) |

I've made some improvements to the book tuning feature in subversion. There are now "Add Line" and "Remove Line" buttons. "Add Line" then requests Add All/White/Black moves. To anyone interested in this, and possible tree mask improvements, maybe check out this forum. http://www.talkchess.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=55452 cheers, Steven |
