In case anyone hasn't used this (kind-of-rough) training feature, it is Play->Training->Find Best Move, and has a small help entry under 'F'. I've attached a tiny two game base with three 'exercises' in them. I have fixed the bug, cheers. The problem was that we are now placing scores at the start of the comment, so all we have to do is search for the magic marker (****D %f->%f) at *any place* in the comment. S. Hi,Currently incompatible the following characteristics: tactical exercises and annotation scores. If I make the annotation of a game with tactical exercises marking and add scores of the position on every play, even if they are marked tactical exercises, there is none. I think it's fixable search to find these tactical exercises while this annotated assessment of each play. forgive my translation Thanks Benigno Hernández |

I've detected a curiosity in the ECO file of Scid: 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 c5 will be assigned to E10 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 c5 4.d5 will be assigned to A60 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 c5 4.d5 b5 will be assigned to E10 This is not looking logical. Does anybody have an explanation for this? A line like "1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 c5 4.d5 a6" will be assigned to A60, and this is logical. Why this exception for 4...b5? Cheers, Gregor |

Hi Steve, It seems that using Skak to export games for print isn't following its options. For instance, I selected 'no' for "Column Style" but it formatted as column anyway: By the way, it was pure hell trying to get skak to work on my system. I have Texmaker running under Linux Mint 17 KDE. I still had to install not only the standard texlive-games package but manually a dozen or so more, such as lambda.sty pgfutil-common.tex and more! I really don't see the improvement over Chess12. |

Ok. I have removed this confusing behaviour, and implemented the proper solution; When clicking on the large "Add Variation" button at the end of a game/var, the last move is automatically duplicated. S. First, thank you for a great interface. In the linux world I can't even think of anything that comes close. Haven't used it under Windows, but if the GUI is like the linux version then it will displace my current favorite BabasChess. Having just sung my praises there's a couple of wish list items I'd like to log: 1. PGN is treated read-only. Not sure why, but this has unfortunate consequences. To strip comments for example one has to import the PGN into a SCID native (and I don't know what this format buys us) db, do the work and then export to PGN. PGN is relatively simple text. Why not operate on it directly and cut out the middle man? 2. Maybe there's a way, but I haven't found how to display engine evaluations during user vs. engine blitz games. Of course the evaluations are visible in a window during analysis mode, but it would be nice to see them during blitz as well. Of course these are "wish list" items so no urgency. I'd offer to pitch in, but I'm not a Tcl/Tk guy. If the project was in a more widely used implementation language like C++, Java, or C# I might have been able to help. |

This behaviour is only for the last move of a game, as an easy way to add a variation. (Adding a var at any other time requires only clicking the addvar button, but adding a var at the end of game requires duplicating the last move - due to a nuance of the pgn standard) But yes, it is confusing. Hi Steve, in the x64 version of 4.13 I can consistently reproduce the following: 1. Make sure you have a game with a few moves already played. 2. Click on any move in the PGN window except for the last one. 3. Using your mouse, make the next move in the game, i.e. move the piece to be moved to where the next move says it should go. 4. Observe that a new variation has been added. Maybe this is intended behaviour but it seems unintuitive because I dont expect a new variation to be added when the move already exists in the game record. This catches me all the time and just feels like a bug. Ive uploaded a short video that shows the problem, in case my description is confusing: http://youtu.be/YzLnNBYRiBE Cheers, Ralph |

Not sure if my post of this a few days ago got sent...so resending. Thx dave I'm using scid vs ps to play on FICS ... 1. when you click offers graph does not seem an obvious way to go back to the 'menu block' that was there before you display offers graph. 2. I have droidchess on my andriod phone...is it possible to send chess games into scid-vs-pc from this...or do you recommend another chess andriod app...there are loads of them ! I.E I want to record my proper chess games in scid-vs-pc and want the best way to add them if I type them into phone at local chess club after match. I fixed my issue by upgrading Tcl and Tk to versions from versions 8.6.1 to 8.6.3, then re-compiling and re-installing Scid vs. PC. Bennett El 15/01/15 a las 07:06, Bennett A. > Scid is not stripping trailing periods. It is the users choice. This is what I mean, for instance if I open the spellchecker it gives the following : "Antipov, Mikhail Al." >> "Antipov, Mikhail Al" because all the names in spelling.ssp are stripped. If you have thousands of names in the database the user normally will accept without editing. Thus stripping the periods is the "default" in Scid. > Even FIDE have trouble with christian/surnames > http://ratings.fide.com/card.phtml?event=25093355 > There is no comma in the name - impossible to know christian/surname Yes, these names cannot be recovered automatically, the database of FIDE is a mess, even the player database of ChessBase suffers from the slovenliness of FIDE. I think that it is important to identify a player even if the name will be spelled differently, e.g. in Germany Russian names will be spelled (transliterated) differently than in English. It would be great if the name can be combined with an unique ID. An almost unique identification exists, namely the FIDE ID, but FIDE is reusing deleted ID's, so it is not really unique, and FIDE does not provide ID's for ancient players. It would be nice if a unique ID even for ancient players exists. In this way a user may enter "Tschechower, Witali" (German transliteration), combined with any unique ID XXXXXXX, and an English user can identify this player as "Chekhover, Vitaly" (English transliteration), because of the unique ID XXXXXXX (the application will do the mapping, of course). IMO such an unique ID is the only way to solve the spelling problem. |

> I'm looking at improving the spell check feature ... but it is not trivial. This name spelling thing is a crux. In Scidb I'm stripping the periods, because Scid and ChessBase are doing this. I cannot say that I'm happy with this, but I don't know whether this should be changed. IMO the most important point is that Scid, Scid vs PC and Scidb should handle name spelling in a similar way. Cheers, Gregor |

This patch Capitalises known names (eg "ARONIAN, L" -> "Aronian, L") but not unknown names (eg "ANAND, V.") Handling these and errant punctuation, needs a more comprehensive approach. They should probably still be done in the name checker, but it proabbly needs bigger changes (in the GUI and source) to accomodate unknown names. S. |

I'm looking at improving the spell check feature ... but it is not trivial. The spelling.ssp file handles cases like this "Aronian, L" >> "Aronian, Levon" (1) 1982.??.??-- "Aronian, L." >> "Aronian, Levon" (1) 1982.??.??-- basically because Lev is the only "L" Aronian. But because Vishy is not the only "V" Anand, spelling.ssp does not have have any rule to fix "Anand, V" or "Anand, V." (only diff is a trailing ".") But i'm thinking we should probably standardise on *one* of these, and include a correction when we run the Spellchecker. (ie convert "Anand, V" to "Anand, V." or vice a versa) So should we use a period or not ? The spelling.ssp currently avoids superfluous periods (eg "Fischer R. J." >> "Fischer, Robert J") but i have a preference to include them. This is a bit of a dilemma. And we also have the case of missing commans to consider (eg "Anand V"). Can we safely convert all "name singleletter" playernames eg "Surname A" to "Surname, A" (or "Surname, A.") Some pgn sources also uppercase the surname, but i think we can safely convert all uppercase player names to capitalised names. Steven |

Thank you both for the help. 1. Have compiled a local copy using the details you provided at:- http://www.linuxx.eu/2012/11/scid-vs-pc-installation-guide-ubuntu.html That was easy - details below. 2. Saving games still is slightly confusing me, if you start scidvspc and enter some moves, then you are effectively 'saving' a game on the clipboard - to move to a database say DavesChessGames - I had to Edit -> Copy pgn, then Edit -> paste pgn. I think this will get easier as I get used to using scidvspc, I think I need to have it start with DavesChessGames open, and then work from there. Essentially after two things from scidvspc, firstly a place to add all the chess games I have played over last few years. Then later, the possibility to share these with fellow club members. Hi, Just started using Scid vs PC - impressive program, so firstly thank you to all who made this. Using the Scid vs. PC 4.13 (Oct 25, 2014) On Ubuntu using Wine to run windows binary. Two Questions:- 1. Should I run / compile a native Linux binary ? Or is there no real advantage to do so. 2. I'm confused as to how to save games I add in to a MyGames database. Do I have to use Game manu...and add game - just seems a little obscure and to be honest I'm not actually seeing the game in the database, but that is probabley user error. Have read what guides I can find, so if there is something I should read to get started please let me know. Thanks again to all, Dave -- David Herring |

I have a little suggestion: when dropping a piece outside of the board it should be removed. I've implemented this in Scidb, this is a good alternative to remove pieces from the board. Cheers, Gregor |

Just a short Changelog for recent subversion changes, some of which could do with testing. Scid is well over ten years old, but it finally has basic piece dragging in the Board Setup window (Edit->Setup Board)! - Steven Changes ------------ Set filter to deleted games prior to compacting game file. Allow dragging pieces in Board Setup window. Some changes to the player info window in preparation for a dictionary widget. Make the Computer Tournament window a bit smaller. NB. analysis(logEngines) is/was unused - it is now analysis(logMax). Remove the errant rounding up of +10 to +11 in score graph y-axis, and add the global background colour to graphs Automatically exit trial mode when changing bases/file-opens... though i dont know if many people use Trial-mode much. |

Yes, it'd be great to have packages for the bigger Linux distros. Maybe someone will do it. I only run an outdated Fedora, and packaging is not too interesting to me. This freedesktop patch/directory is probably useful. I tested it a half year ago, but it should still work. http://sourceforge.net/projects/scidvspc/files/support%20files/freedesktop.org.tgz/download Anyway, I will add your [2] to my documentation. regards, Steven On Mon, Dec 1, 2014 at 2:00 AM, Klearchos-Angelos Gkountras <ka...@gr...> wrote: > Ok, the end users don't want to mess their hands with terminal , can > someone make at least a package for debian/ debian derivatives [1] ?
