Thanks - on my attempt "lsb_release -r" returns "n/a". Of course this is 
partly an effect that Gentoo is not a platform where everybody will match 
- surely part of the whole concept is that each user will have built and 
set up a system JUST for themselves and for choice optimised for exactly 
the CPU model and other hardware that they happen to have.

Anyway, with lsb_release installed how does a Reduce comfigure & build 
work for you. I rather hope it now builds in a directory with "gentoo2.2" 
in its name....
