Hi, Hope I am sending this to the correct group (if not, feel free to delete/forward to proper place). I've toyed with the 1880 game in Rails v. 1.8.2, and have noticed a few "glitches". Preferences: Information icon for minors should have description of what each No such thing as IPO or Pool, just Pool or PO The Undo feature is very buggy and does not reverse in certain cases. Communist revolution (when first 4 train is purchased)- Stock Market stops moving when the first 4 train is purchased and/or discarded (in 1.8.2 it keeps going) Revolution is over (stocks start moving again) after first 6 train is bought. Foreign Investors (1-7) stop operating after the first 4 train is purchased. Players cannot sell shares of RRs they are President of during Revolution (1.8.2 allowed this) If the Rocket (free train) is not used prior to the 1st 4 train being purchased (or discarded), the rocket is immediately turned in for the 2nd 4 train (unless player has no RR, then it is discarded). (1.8.2 didn't do this) On a forced train player has the option to take out loans rather than sell stock. This is not working when a player cannot sell his own stock in Communist Revolution. (1.8.2 freezes) East/West connection for Russia should add $50 bonus (not working for run calcs in 1.8.2) 2+2 trains rust when 4+4 are discarded (not happening in game) OO tile (235, the yellow "lollipop") does not display properly on map when placed. Beijing Beijing stations are reserved (1.8.2 allowed placement of other RRs in reserved spots on yellow/green Beijing) Tiles placed adjacent to Beijing must not destroy track (each side of hex has track on yellow)(1.8.2 allowed illegal track) Second 2 trains (~@$250, do not count toward requirement to own train, do count against limit) should be available after the first 6 train is purchased (none shown in available trains in 1.8.2) 6e train should start Phase D (track building for D leases only, D values in red areas)(Phase D did not appear to start in 1.8.2) 8 trains rust 4s , 8e trains rust 4+4s (did not appear to happen in 1.8.2) Pete Lindholm |

Hi Guys, since the switch from cvs to git last autumn the rails-commit mailinglist has died. The git commits arent shown there anymore. I have no access to the mechanismn, so i cant fix (if thats fixable at all). Anyone wanting to keep on top of the commits should go to the following link and Subscribe to Updates under Update Notifications. http://sourceforge.net/projects/rails/ Kind Regards Martin |

Same here, it didn't occur to me that it could be limited to only one side, it's a fairly bad company anyway, that restriction would make it terrible. Hello Lonny, regarding the SCR home base token on N12 we hit an interesting problem in rails. Your original game map has the home base on the western hex. So the question arose here, is the tile lay for #235 valid where the only track is leaving that hex on the eastern edge ? Or should it leave the hex at the western or northwestern or southwestern edge only ? Is the painted home hex meant as SCR starts on the western side of the hex ? or can a player choose the orientation of #235 freely and will in all cases use the city with the track ? Kind regards und schöne Grüsse nach Österreich :) Martin |

Hi In a recent game of 1835 with Rails the following occurred: The Prussian was started in operating round 8.1 . Some privates and minors merged, but not all. The Prussian didn't operate. At the start of operating round 8.2, one minor merged into the Prussian. Player holdings were: Stan: 10% Prussian, M1 (not converted yet), BB private Dave: no Prussian shares, M6 Neil: 20% Prussian Pier: 15% Prussian, M3, PfB private Easterly1: 30%, no minors The Prussian then operated, and paid dividends. This was the output from rails: PR pays out full dividend of 150M Stan gets no income for 15% PR shares as precursors have operated Pier gets no income for 5% PR shares as precursors have operated Stan receives -7M for -1 5% shares Pier receives 15M for 2 5% shares Easterly1 receives 45M for 6 5% shares Neil receives 30M for 4 5% shares This seems wrong: the minors didn't operate in the current operating round, so all converted shares should receive a dividend. Is this a bug? Sincerely Pieter |

Hello fellow rails fans, please find the excerpt from the readme accompagnying Release 1.8.1. below: Rails release 1.8.1 This is a minor release fixing a number of minor glitches: IPO shares of not started companies were highlighted as possible actions even though the player was lacking the money to start a corporation. Fixing Tiles definitions and display tiles for 1880. Numerous connections and positions were wrong. (8887 and 8888 for sure). Fixed 2R train availability. (Michael) Fixed updating problem with parSlots. (Michael) Adjusting Gameslist.xml to reflect new status of 1880, moved the game up in the list to the historical lineup. Added Frederick Weld as Contributor to gameslist.xml And some nice enhancement: Added new pane to show par slots and last company to purchase a train. (Michael) Please report any bugs you find on the mailinglist as usual. Thank you for the patience and feedback. Martin & Michael (together with the rest of the rails crew :)) |

Hello Rails-Community, after a long time we are now able to present you with a new variant being fully supported (at least we think so :)) by rails. 1880 is now fully supported by rails 1.8.0. Our tests didnt bring up bugs sofar. If you find some or think you found one, please send the save game based on 1.8.0. There shouldnt be any problems with other savegames from the 1.7.10-1.7.12 releases either. I would like to thank Erik Vos, Brett Lentz and Stefan Frey for their support in the past 2 years. And of course i have to thank Michael Alexander for the finishing touches of the more complex code parts needed to make 1880 work in rails finally. Have fun, Martin Brumm |

I used rail to run a game and was quite happy. I looked over the mailing lists, and couldn't find these issues, so hopefully these are not repeats. I used the latest codebase (git pull) for the run, since that seemed to have fixed a few issues related to coalfields. Q1: It seems that the selection for what stock certificate the C&A gets (PRR or Reading) is done before the start of the game. Do people just generally do the initial bidding/private companies by hand to select this? I don't see any moderator override within the game to adjust stock certificates. Q2: Likewise for the M&H - the wiki notes that this can only be exchanged during stock rounds - is there any best way to handle this if exchanged during an operating round? It would seem this might be a common practice - unless one thinks the NYC stock is going to sell out, by waiting to the operating round (but before the NYC operates) you get the payout of the M&H and also the payout of the NYC - especially if you can wait until the NYC will pay out Possible coalfields issue: 1) It seems that the automatic revenue calculator will only count coalfields once even if you have a legitimate route to use it 2 times. Looking at the rules, it says the coalfields act as a small town, just one has to buy rights to use it. In our case, the CO connect to coalfields, bought the rights, and then load a city tile + token on K9. With 2 2 trains, the best route should be K9 (20) - L10 (40) and K13 (20) - L10 (40). However instead, rails did the K13-L10 and then K13-J14 (20). I can provide a save file the illustrates this, but seems pretty easy to reproduce. 2) The rules I read suggest that one can not build track beyond the coalfields unless one has the coalfields right. In my example above, it would let me lay tile K9 before buying coalfields right. In this case above, since you can buy rights at anytime, not an issue for the C&O. But the N&W later in the game built track/bought tokens beyond the coalfields without having coalfields rights and without any legitimate way to get to those spaces without going through coalfields. Thought for improvement: Have the offsite red areas show current value of their worth, or if that is not possible, having them show the values at the different phases (eg, display 30/60 on the map) might be nice. I realize you can get this information by clicking on the tile, but would be nice to just see those values on the map (same for Coalfields) as it would make it a little clearer the values of different spaces just by looking at the map. All in all, aside from these minor issues, was quite happy and will hope to use it again. |

I tried a solo game of 18Scan last year and got some of the way through, with some manual adjustments along the way. IIRC, I got stuck when it came to folding in the minors to form the SJ, and when assigning Privates to the Public companies. I also wanted to adjust the stock market at some point and could't find a manual way of doing so. It does occur to me that it might be useful if Rails allowed a game to be played almost entirely manually, with a mode where items could be manually adjusted akin to using a Cyberboard module. The idea is that this would make it easier to play a prototype game all the way through, with the automation gradually being added on top. I don't know if this would be as easy to implement as it sounds. Of course, being an open source project, the work done is entirely down to those with the enthusiasm to work on it, so youse should all work on what interests you. (Sadly I have no time for coding these days). Dave. |

I like that - it's commentary mixed in with the Report window text. What I found interesting about Thomas' message was that they didn't use the Report window text at all. Rather than this, where the first three lines are report window and the next line is commentary: Mark bids $120 on M&H. Remaining free cash $195. Tim buys SVNRR for $20 John bids $75 on D&H. Remaining free cash $230. ** Thinking I'd be outbid on the C&A, and use the D&H to 'power up' the C&O, CP, or Erie We instead see something like this: in OR5a, Tom operates the 'GW' (connects to Detroit, runs for $220 and pays-out) and 'THB' (lays green Hamilton [token in SW, other spoke SE] for $40, takes out a loan, doesn't buy a Train); it's now Paul's 'LPS'. I open Rails with a .command file on my Mac: #!/bin/bash cd /Users/shafferc/Dropbox/Home/CB/rails-1.7.11 java -jar ./rails-1.7.11.jar $1 This opens rails fine, but also spawns a terminal window. Is there something I can add to the script that will close or suppress the terminal window? Thanks. -- Chris Please consider the environment before printing this e-mail. |

Salutations, gentlefolk ! This turned up last year in the middle of my game http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/663100/1830-firefly-a-game-played-via-rails-dropbox-and IMHO, while 'twould be nice to have a 'tile-laying-and-upgrading-rules-enforcement AI', I wouldn't put it at the top of my 'most-wanted-RAILS-enhancements' list. With the variations in tile lay-and-upgrade rules between games, it's tough even for humans to keep track. Yours. John Desmond |

That isn't something rails currently checks, and it has been on the feature request list for ages. In all cases of tile lays and token placements, rails is only ever going to highlight as a suggestion, it will not enforce a correct/incorrect move, that's up to the players, the algorithm to check legal placements is complex and requires a lot of modifications depending on game type, so in this instance consider rails as a digital board, rather than an enforcer of rules. I think the algorithm is called the human brain ver 1. If a programmer is to take every possibility into consideration, development will take forever. If one already knows a move is illegal, you wouldn't make it even though the program 'allows' it. Rails is pretty good as is - what is needed are fully playable versions of 1870, 1880, 1861, and 1817 :) Ken Soo Date: Thu, 28 Feb 2013 09:40:01 -0800 From: twa...@ya... Paul, although RAILS shows the 'CA' could green that gentle curve yellow city port (that is to the east of all those whistlestops), that is not legal in '1856' RAW -you need to be able to run a Train on the new track, and the 'CA' still won't connect to that upgraded city.
