To avoid some disappointment with this release I will give some more hints what to expect. There has been some bug-fixes which can cause some save files to be incompatible with the new release. Exchange of trains is one example. If such an error occurs either stay with the previous release or start at that point and replay the missing moves. Another thing to mention is that route and revenue calculation is disabled by default for save files from previous Rails version. This allows pbem users to update to that rails version for bug-fixes who do want to play with automatic game support turned on. For new games the default is to activate them, but each of them can be deactivated under the game options. And to finish here is that Erik has improved 1835 that it is ready for serious testing, but please do not start long-running pbems yet ;-) Stefan On Monday 31 May 2010 16:45:46 Jeff Feuer wrote: > I just loaded up an 1830 save file in which I ended the previous OR by > exchanging a 4 train for a D. I just loaded up an 1830 save file in which I ended the previous OR by exchanging a 4 train for a D. When I make the move and save the file (using either Rails 1.2.2 or Rails 1.3), Rails 1.3 says it's an illegal move and rewinds the game back to the buy train step. It's definitely legal, and Rails 1.3 lets me do it, but it won't let me load up a save containing the move. I'm pleased to announce that Rails 1.3 is now available. This release adds an initial implementation of automated route and revenue calculation as well as bug fixes for 1830, 1856, 1889. Also in this release is revised documentation on how well-supported each game is. Download the new release at http://rails.sourceforge.net/ ---Brett. |

I agree that the usage is counter-intuitive. This question has come up several times before on the developers list. There is a command line parameter you can use to override the internal my.properties file with another file, including the one that sits in the directory with rails.sh|bat|jar. Without specifying the parameter, there is no override. -- Chris Please consider the environment before printing this e-mail. I've tried editing the my.properties file in my rails folder (the folder containing rails.sh and rails-1.2.2.jar) and have used the NEXT_PLAYER suffix as follows: save.filename.suffix=NEXT_PLAYER Still, my saves to not do this. Digging further, I used an archive utility to look inside the .jar file and noticed another my.properties file within the jar. I edited this file and updated the jar and then got the result I was looking for. Is it intended that the my.properties file in the application folder is ignored? If so, one would obviously question why it exists there at all, so I'm guessing the expected behavior is that the app folder file should override what is in the jar at runtime or something. If I can provide any more details information to help with the issue, just ask. Not sure what would be of use at this point except my system. I'm running karmic koala ubuntu on i686 smp. java -version output: java version "1.6.0_15" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_15-b03) Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 14.1-b02, mixed mode) |

I wouldn't call this a bug, but I found something in 1889 that may be worth some polish if/when someone feels like it. I was unclear on the 1889 rules with regards to the Private Company E (which can be traded by the owning player for an IR share). The rules didn't clearly state whether this should be done during a stock turn, stock round, OR, etc. So, in rails, I tried to use the power during my corporation's operating turn (since some other games have privates which would allow this trade IIRC) and the message I got was: "Unexpected action: UseSpecialProperty: Swap E for 10% share of IR". I didn't know if this was a rails limitation on what should be allowed or whether rails just was following rules but not making that clear to me. I inquired on BGG and JC (who I generally consider an authority on rules) suggested that in this game, the trade must be done as a stock buying action. As such, rails appears to be following the rules accordingly, but it would be helpful if the response message to the user was clearer, such as "This special property must be used during your stock turn" or similar. I obviously have no idea if the code supports dynamic responses for things like this, but figured I'd point it out in case it matters to anyone. |

That fixed it. Thanks Phil. When I extract with Winzip I need to click on "Use Folder Names". Robert, There aren't any specific system requirements other than that your machine is capable of running Java. Judging by the below it looks like you might be missing some components from the downloaded game. It's also possible that the log4j component isn't in the right place. When you extracted the zip file, did you retain the directory structure? There should be a \lib directory underneath wherever you extracted rails to with a \log4j-1.2 directory underneath that, does any of this exist? Hi everybody, I can't get rails to run I have a somewhat old compaq preserio with 512mb of main memory. Is that enough? Is there a videocard requirement to run rails? I can email the error message if anyone's interested. Maybe I should do that anyways. All users of Rails: To improve the library of test cases for Rails all users are invited to submit their saved game files. Especially fully completed games are of interest: It is possible to save games even after the end of game message. But unfinished games with interesting and complicated moves are equally helpful. And those you use Rails for pbem are invited as well to submit their current state of game: This strongly increases the likelihood that their game will still be reloadable with the next releases, at least up to the state of the submitted file. Please state in the mail body the name of the submitter, 18xx gametype and if the game was a completed game or is a pbem in progress. Only submit save files that were created by a fairly recent Rails version (1.1.0 upwards, Dec2009+). Simulated games can be submitted too, but please indicate that as well. Simply send the save file as attachment off the list directly to Erik Vos (eri...@xs...) or Stefan Frey (ste...@we...). Thanks for your support! |

The link on the rails page to the rails users list is broken. Just got a 4P game of 1889 started with 1.2.1. Looking forward to testing it out! Justin |

Hey gang - I've created two new mailing lists: rails-users and rails-announce. The -users list will be for non-technical discussions, gameplay and rules interpretation discussions, and support requests from users. The -announce list will be for anybody that wants to skip the discussions and just hear about new releases. It'll be a very low traffic list that's only used to distribute major news. ---Brett. |
