I'm pleased to announce the general availability of the latest version of Rails, version 1.4. Downloads are available at http://rails.sourceforge.net/ or by the direct link https://sourceforge.net/projects/rails/files/Rails/1.4/ Some release highlights: * Configuration UI - Configuration settings are available both at the StartUp window and under Options=>Configuration. - Settings are/have to be stored as profiles in a configuration file * New configuration options (especially for ftf) - Autosave option - Adjustable Font styles and sizes - Map autoscrolling * Game history - Report window replaced by GameHistory window, that allows to go backwards and forward through the game report. Start of replay at any position possible. - Old report window can be activated via configuration. - Uses undo mechanism, thus might still hang sometimes. * Other bug fixes - Fixes for 1856 and 18EU undo problems. - Improved revenue calculation (10-30% faster) ---Brett. |

The noMapMode is not activated for all games, as some of them need a few tweaks to work in that mode: Especially token laying is critical issue here. However it seems from the rules that 18AL does not require no such changes, so I activate that option, but I have not done a test play for this yet. Thus the only remaining fully implemented game without noMapMode is 1856. I know which issues have to be considered (CGR merger and tokens and special tokens), but this will have to wait for the next release. Hi Bob, thanks for your bug report. I used the window of opportunity for a quick fix of that bug, so that it will be included in the upcoming release. This was easy to recreate, but it in general it is helpful to provide a save file of the game state, for which the bug occurred. Even better is using the sourceforge bug tracker, that allows to attach the bug. http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=add&group_id=132173&atid=723360 None of this is a prerequisite for a bug fix, but it helps to find all bugs at one place. Ah I see. But, that option goes away when I select 18AL. Is it not available for all the games? Bob, When you start a new game, click the options button and tick the 'no map mode' selection box, this will put you in face to face mode. The release note's mention a no-map mode. How do you actually get into that. Are there any docs for this app? I would be happy to contribute some... but I'm not sure how much the app changes from game to game. Like, in 18AL there is a "special" menu on the game status page which is Yellow, but does nothing. Although at times it says "XXXX Requests a Turn"... but I'm not sure what/why that is needed. I'm enjoying using rails while I learn/play 18AL via forum on BGG. Thanks, BOb |

Dave, Make sure when you unzip the zip file you maintain the directory structure, rails expects the log4j file to be in a certain location. You don't need eclipse or anythig else, just the standard jde Phil On 21 Aug 2010, at 15:07, Dave Berry <da...@be...> wrote: > Hello, > > I have downloaded Rails (onto my Windows XP PC) and unzipped it. Hello, I have downloaded Rails (onto my Windows XP PC) and unzipped it. I can't find any instructions on how to install or run it. I've looked in the README, on the web site and in the archives of this mailing list. I tried running the rails.bat file (without any arguments) and I get an NoClassDefFoundError exception, looking for org/apache/log4j/Logger. Do I need to add a folder to my %PATH% variable or something? In case it matters, here is the output of "java -version": C:\rails-1.3>java -version java version "1.6.0_20" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_20-b02) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 16.3-b01, mixed mode, sharing) I have not set this machine as a development PC (yet), so I don't have Eclipse installed or anything like that. Currently I'm just trying to run Rails to see what it's like. Best wishes, Dave. |

Paul, Thanks for reporting. I've noticed a couple other errors in 18EU (playing several 2-player solitaire games). - It lets you merge a minor into a newly forming company even if there is no track connection. [EV] Track connection awareness for tile and token laying has only recently been implemented, and not all cases have already been covered. Certainly connections required for merging aren't recognised yet. Fortunately this omission does not prevent you from playing according to the rules... :-) - I had a company I think with a 5 with a Pullman, and had another company buy the 5 train off - the Pullman remained on the company, and even ran for revenue. [EV] Correct. I have fixed this, the Pullmann is now discarded. This fix will be in the next release. - Usually it starts a new tile play connecting with existing track, but sometimes I've noticed it doesn't. For example, in the hex 2 spaces SW of minor 11, it starts off with the yellow city pointing north and south, and lets you play it, even though it should be pointing sw-ne. [EV] You mean in Trieste? That's one example of a case that has not yet been covered: laid tiles are currently only required to connect to *any* track (such as the Trieste harbour), not specifically to track that has a route. Again, for now you'll have to decide for yourself if you want to play according to the rules. It's a fantastic program in any case. Thanks! Erik. |

Fixed, will be included in the next release. Thanks for the error report. It turned out that an old (both bad and obsolete) method to detect bank breaking was suppressing certain money transfers as long as the Bank has a negative amount of cash. Terry, Do you have any further information about the exact steps? A screenshot of an error message might help as well. My first thought is have you tried different locations to save the game within? I have downloaded and installed Rails and it seems to run well but on both computers I have tried it on, I get Save Failed - Access is Denied error message when trying to save a started game. One computer has Vista, the other has Win 7. I run the program as an administrator. Can anyone help? Many thanks, |

You have to be connected to the station that will contain the new token, unless you're using a "teleport" ability like the D&H, Waterloo, or Pfalzbahnen. |

No, it is not. Rails does not enforce token placement rules yet. -- Chris Shaffer Please consider the environment before printing this email. I have a rules question that arose in an 1830 rails game I am playing. A friend had an existing line connected to the northern city in the NYC Hex but no connection to the southern city in the Hex. He upgraded it to a brown Hex with two spaces for tokens, but instead of placing his token in the northern NY city that was connected to his line, he placed the token in the southern NY city in the same hex even though there is no rail line connection to his existing lines. Rails allowed this token placement. He said that Rails offered him the option to place the token in either city, even though he had no rail connection to the other city. Is that token placement permitted under the rules? _________________________________________________________________ The New Busy think 9 to 5 is a cute idea. Hi I hope I'm in the correct place to report an issue we had with using the Rails app. We had an issue playing 18EU, where a Major Corporation was formed by merging two Minor Corporations. Each of these Minors had a Pullman, so the Major ended the SR with two Pullmans. According to the rules, a corporation may only own one Pullman (4.4.9), so I believe that the Major should be forced to discard a Pullman at the end of the SR in which it was formed. An issue with my e-mail prevented me from sending out a proper changelog with my announcement. So, here is the changelog for 1.3: * Tile and Token Laying - Hexes which are eligible for tile and token lays are highlighted - Only a game hint, not enforced. * Revenue Calculation - Maximum revenue for the owned trains is suggested - Presetting for the revenue entry, has still to be confirmed or can be adjusted - Should incorporate all game specific rules, including bonus rules * Map Correction - Downgrade of tiles is now possible - Only tile availability is checked, otherwise no restrictions are applied - Tile lays that require the re-laying out of tokens are not possible * General - Prevent 'foreign' token being layed on reserved home token slots. - Fixed bugs in OO-tile and token laying. - Fixed occasional incorrect priority deal assignment after 1830-style auctions. - Fixed disappearance of last (highest) train bought. - Added option to fix tile orientation (used for 1835 Hamburg). * 1830 - Fixed possibility of buying a Diesel at exchange price without an exchange taking place. * 1835 - Finished/Fixed Prussian formation - Allow 100% share ownership and nationalization. - Bugs in initial round player order (Clemens variant) and BY flotation. - Added several variant options. * 1856 - (also for 18EU) added (invisible) City object to Goderich/Hamburg tile to facilitate revenue calculation. - Fixed bug in effect of repeated 5% CGR share sales on share price. - Fixed W&S token lay cost problem. * 18EU - Fixes for bankruptcy rules (not yet tested under all possible circumstances). |

I have seen cases where saved files would not load because the D-train exchange was executed (and recorded) incompletely: the D was obtained at the exchange price, but the 4-(or whatever) train was not turned in. I have seen this caused by pressing 'Cancel' on the which-train-to-exchange question. This error has recently been fixed. I don't know if this might explain your problem; if not, I'm willing to have a look at your saved file to check why it fails. But I doubt if there is much chance to rescue it. Subject: Re: [Rails-users] [Rails-announce] Rails 1.3 is now available. I tried starting at that point and replaying the missing moves and it still doesn't work. I think the problem is that when I selected to exchange the 4 for the D, it doesn't save the fact into the log or something of what train was exchanged so that rails 1.3 knows what was exchanged when you load the save game. It chose which train I wanted to exchange automatically (as that was the only train I had to exchange) but as it was automatic, that might be causing the bug of not saving which train was exchanged.
