Mark, Have you got a copy of the saved file where this is happening that you can send through? I launch saved files directly and haven't seen this issue behaving differently. I have seen the case of the map sections vanishing (and I believe Erik and Stefan fixed a few cases where this happens prior to 1.4) but I'm surprised it's different to launched versus manually loading the save file. If a .rails file is associated to the rails.bat, it would be another instance (besides just plain running it from the command line), where that use case would occur. -- Mark ----- http://audio.hamzy.info/MandatoryBlackVelvetQualye.mp3 You must be the change you wish to see in the world. -- Mahatma Gandhi Worrying is praying for that you do not wish to happen. I am seeing an issue with the map not displaying the whole 1830 map on rails 1.4. I can reproduce this problem both on Windows [Windows XP 2.14, Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_22-b04)] and Linux [RHEL 5.5, OpenJDK Server VM (build 1.6.0-b09, mixed mode)]. If I play my turn via the command line rails.bat/sh and pass in the saved rails file, then I see the problem. If I, instead, load the saved rails file from the "New Game" dialog, then I do not see the problem. The problem that I am seeing is that I only see half of the 1830 map. I can force parts of the unseen map to redraw. But I cannot lay a tile. I see the following exception: Exception in thread "AWT-EventQueue-0" java.lang.NullPointerException at rails.ui.swing.hexmap.GUITile.<init>(GUITile.java:54) at rails.ui.swing.hexmap.GUIHex.dropTile(GUIHex.java:766) at rails.ui.swing.ORUIManager.tileSelected(ORUIManager.java:704) at rails.ui.swing.UpgradesPanel.mouseClicked(UpgradesPanel.java:417) at java.awt.AWTEventMulticaster.mouseClicked(Unknown Source) at java.awt.Component.processMouseEvent(Unknown Source) at javax.swing.JComponent.processMouseEvent(Unknown Source) at java.awt.Component.processEvent(Unknown Source) at java.awt.Container.processEvent(Unknown Source) at java.awt.Component.dispatchEventImpl(Unknown Source) at java.awt.Container.dispatchEventImpl(Unknown Source) at java.awt.Component.dispatchEvent(Unknown Source) at java.awt.LightweightDispatcher.retargetMouseEvent(Unknown Source) at java.awt.LightweightDispatcher.processMouseEvent(Unknown Source) at java.awt.LightweightDispatcher.dispatchEvent(Unknown Source) at java.awt.Container.dispatchEventImpl(Unknown Source) at java.awt.Window.dispatchEventImpl(Unknown Source) at java.awt.Component.dispatchEvent(Unknown Source) at java.awt.EventQueue.dispatchEvent(Unknown Source) at java.awt.EventDispatchThread.pumpOneEventForFilters(Unknown Source) at java.awt.EventDispatchThread.pumpEventsForFilter(Unknown Source) at java.awt.EventDispatchThread.pumpEventsForHierarchy(Unknown Source) at java.awt.EventDispatchThread.pumpEvents(Unknown Source) at java.awt.EventDispatchThread.pumpEvents(Unknown Source) at java.awt.EventDispatchThread.run(Unknown Source) Any ideas what might be wrong? -- Mark ----- http://audio.hamzy.info/MandatoryBlackVelvetQualye.mp3 You must be the change you wish to see in the world. -- Mahatma Gandhi Worrying is praying for that you do not wish to happen. I have notice in v1.4 that when I try to Zoom -> In on the map... nothing happens until the third time I select it... then it seems to jump to the third Zoom level... then I can zoom out one or two steps. Just a minor annoyance so no big deal. BTW: This happens on both my windows and mac boxes. Also, are there any plans to have rails save the window positions, sizes and zoom level. This would help mucho, espessially since I can't just keep rails open and load a new game file. Thanks... BOb |

The URL I sent you to the game map has a link on the side labelled "stock market". It's really much easier to get people to help answer your questions, in the long term, if you show some willingness to try finding the information for yourself first. Buffalo is a single red offboard that occupies two hexes. Lake Erie is the entire southern blue border. There are multiple versions of the 1856 map on the web, both scans and redrawn copies. I'm not a Mac guy so don't know the exact process on a Mac, but rails will use the first argument on the command line as a save file to load, for example: java -jar rails-1.4.jar 1830_20100915_1320_Phil.rails on windows will load straight into rails from the savefile '1830_20100915_1320_Phil.rails' from the rails directory. What you will need to therefore do (for whatever OS you use) is associate .rails files with the binary to launch the Java runtime (java.exe in the case of windows) followed by '-jar' then followed by the full path to the rails-1.4.jar, the have your OS put the full path to the .rails file you just clicked on as the next argument. Then it will work. Annoyingly you will have to update this file association for each new revision of rails but that's a reasonably simple process where Windows is concerned. I might fire up the drastically out of date MacMini tonight and see if I can work out how to do it on that but hopefully this info will help a more Macsavvy person to find the correct process :) Phil On 15 September 2010 13:52, Bob Archer <bo...@ar...> wrote: > I'm sure there is a way, I just don't know it... I'm sure there is a way, I just don't know it... I've never developed in java. It would be really nice if a Mac app packager could be made so you could do this. From what I am reading it isn't too difficult to do... and there are some Ant tasks available to make it easy. Perhaps I can look at it this weekend. What OS is rails built on? I agree... if at least you could load a new game without closing and re-opening the app it would be nice. I currently have 4 games in progress so it is a bit awkward now. Sorry, you can't do that. The rails.command file just opens rails in the correct directory, saving time navigating to find things. Best I can tell, you can't do it on Windows or Linux either. This, combined with being unable to close a game without closing the entire program, is the single biggest usability problem with Rails. -- Chris Please consider the environment before printing this e-mail. Chris, Thanks for the help. I'm not sure I 100% get what you are saying. Take the rails.command file and set it to open with terminal. Now, I still can't association .rails files with this command file. What am I missing? Just to clarify, I want to be able to double-click on the saved game file, the 18xx_Time_Name.rails file and have it opened with rails rather than have to use the load command every time. Does anyone know how I can set up my Mac so when I double-click a .rails file it will open in rails. Since .jar isn't an executable it won't let me associate the files with it. BOb |

Hi guys, Me and three other guys just played our first game of 1856 and we used rails (initially in rails 1.3 and later in rails 1.4) in hotseat mode. We played normally until one of the public companies, LPS, went bust and according to the rules, their trains should go onto the open market so that any other public company can buy them. The problem is that we saw no way of being able to purchase them in rails 1.3 or 1.4. When during an operating round we clicked on the Buy Train button, the drop-down list only showed the available trains from other public companies and not also the ones from the open market. What are we doing wrong? Thank you so much. Best regards, Carlos |

General Remark to all users: It is highly recommended to upgrade to the new version 1.4., especially for those playing games which include a Diesel train (1830, 1856, 1889) and 18EU due to important bug-fixes. If your latest game file is loadable in 1.4. it is much safer to continue play with the up-to-date release. Hi Mike, that is a known bug, which was fixed in 1.4. Unfortunately the save file is not reloadable in 1.4. either, as this was prevented by a bug fix during the 18EU auction. As you submitted your game file already (see previous e-mail), it was very easy to fix that issue and I have a working 18EU file attached. Hi We're having a problem with our 18EU game, where we're unable to open the game file, getting the error 'Load failed, reason: Reload failure'. Attached is the last position which we can open, '18EU_20100902_1517_JD.rails' It's JD's turn, and he opens KBS @$100, placing a token in Berlin. He then saves the game, using the default naming - '18EU_20100902_1620_Mike.rails'. So far no-one has been able to open that save file, which is also attached. All players have the same problem, and we've tried v1.2.2 and v1.3. I've also tried a fresh download of 1.2.2, but still get the same problem. I've also had someone outside the game try the file, and they're seeing the same behavior. I'll pass it over to the experts. :) Mike www.deans-inter.net |

To Jim and all (pbem) users in general: Some comments about some choices for the new version: 1) Configuration profiles and files: I took the deliberate decision that each profile is always linked to a configuration file: Rails does not allow the application of a profile without providing a storage location. This might surprise users a little, the reason for this is easy: Otherwise it cannot be guaranteed, that settings are still available next time. To simplify the usage the profile/file combinations are stored automatically to the working directory of rails (if this is writable for Rails). Another advantage is that this allows even to run Rails out of dropbox and each user can still define its own profile and profile location. This profile can be selected by adding a -Dprofile={profilename} (e.g. -Dprofile=myOwnProfile) to the start command for Rails. Remark: If someone uses the old configuration (my.properties) files, they can be imported directly from the configuration window. The support of those will end from the next version on. 2) Game history Here I assume that the usage pattern is: Take action and then add the comment. So comments always relate to the previous action and the quote is attributed to the last action owner. Going back in game history is similar to the one already available in Rails: Crossing the boundaries of players/companies requires a "forced undo". As soon as game position in the game history is selected that crosses this boundary, all Rails windows are disabled and one has to issue the additional command "play from here". Another advantage from my point of view is that it avoids accidentally restarting at a past situation without that intention. Any comments or proposal for change are welcome. Actually there have two changes to the 18EU initial sale of minors: 1) A bug fix: Skipping the players who already passed in a started (English) auction. Different to other 18xx the 18EU rules explicitly define that passing players leave that auction. This potentially makes old save files invalid. Players should finish with Rails 1.3. 2) A requested feature: Player, who have the sole option "pass" (due to insufficient funds remaining), have that action selected automatically. This does NOT impact old save files. This is implemented on the GameManager level, thus should also work on other occasions (but not in the StockRound as here the (manual) autopass option is available in addition to the standard pass). To confirm that 2) was not the reason for the problem, I removed the superfluous passes from the save file and it is now loadable with Rails 1.4. I have attached that Rails 1.4 compatible file, if Mike wants to continue with the new version. Ah good. I just was investigating, and I noticed that the game you attached was saved with version 1.2.2, which is pretty aged by now. I suspect the problem was caused by a difference in handling players who have previously passed in an auction in later turns: in your saved game a 'pass' was recorded for each such player, whereas the new version just skips such players. So the new version got completely confused who's turn it was in the initial round. It looks like that the acting player isn't checked in this (or perhaps any) initial round. That needs to be fixed. Hi I was testing the new v1.4, and it had an issue opening our ongoing 18EU game, on a Mac OSX 10.6.4. It complained about an invalid purchase in the start of the game, then displayed a blank window, that couldn't be closed via the normal red button/icon. Only option was a command-q. I've attached the game file. Mike www.deans-inter.net |
