Hello again The attached files contains the savegames I made when rerunning my first pbem game on 1.9.0, so it may help understanding the anomaly 5 I reported earlier > anomaly 5 : seen on 1.9.0 : situation : during the operating round of company A, his president must sell [shares of] company B to raise money according to forced sale rule. As a result, this changes the position of company B on the stock market (drops to lower values), but 1.9.0 doesnt update the company operating order (behaves has if B was still in it's original position before the sale) The anomaly took place during OR 6.2 where WBG didnt play in right order after the forced WGB sale during CA round on the same OR Unfortunately, i couldnt see how it behaves on 2.0RC1 yet : - save file 1856_FDSC-cgr.rails takes place in OR 6.1 just after CGR formation. Worth noting : this save file generated on 1.9.0 can be loaded in 2.0.RC1 - the next save file i have is 1856_FDSC_StockRound 7.rails (from the name I guess I saved in SR7 i.e. after OR6.2 issue). Worth noting : this save file generated on 1.9.0 cannot be loaded in 2.0RC1. It displays an error message about "Load Interrupted", then freezes at 92% - last file i have is 1856_FDSC.rails which i believe i saved at or near the end of the game and has the same error than 1856_FDSC_StockRound 7.rails Thinking about it, this might (or might not) be the same issue as what I reported on 2.0RC1 : > Anomaly 12 : Display issue after CGR formation. > After CGR formation, some companies seemed to operate in wrong order. We finaly realized that in fact, they operated in the right order (according to market order) but on the map window, the company operating was not the company displayed Please let me know if this helps enough. If needed I can replay the end of OR6.1 and OR6.2 on 2.0RC1 starting from file 1856_FDSC-cgr.rails That game is also the one in which i had > anomaly 6 : seen on 1.9.0 : 1.9.0 doesnt update the certificate limit according to the new (lower) number of available companies when one companie disapears during OR. This takes place later, at the very end of OR6.3. Again, let me know if you can use the save files, or if you want me to replay also OR6.3 in 2.0RC1 Eric |

Hello all I played another 1856 game on 2.0RC1 with my son. Here's what came up. Anomaly 10bis : Can't reload OR save files once CGR is created. Can reload SR save files. This is in fact a similar behaviour to what I described in the other game as anomaly 10 In this game too, CGR formation took place at the during OR 6.1 In the attached zip file, 1856_20151025_1807_OperatingRound 6.1.rails is a save game i made just before CGR formation. This file can be reloaded with no issue 1856_20151025_1909_OperatingRound 6.2.rails is a save game i made some moves after CGR formation. This file cannot be reloaded and freezes at 92% 1856_20151027_2203_StockRound 7.rails is a save game i made after reloading OR6.1, then playing the end of OR6.1, then OR6.2 and OR6.3, up to SR7. This file can be reloaded. Anomaly 11 : Tunnel right displayed and counted twice in CGR In this game, two companies that merged into CGR had the tunnel right. In the resulting CGR, the tunnel right is displayed twice, and is counted twice in the revenue calculation. Should be displayed and counted only once. Anomaly 12 : Display issue after CGR formation. After CGR formation, some companies seemed to operate in wrong order. We finaly realized that in fact, they operated in the right order (according to market order) but on the map window, the company operating was not the company displayed. As it's rather difficult to explain I took a screen capture (see CGR-TGB.png) At the moment of the capture (sometime during OR6.3 if I remember well, although not 100% sure, it might be during OR6.2 -- note btw that the OR round was not longer displayed on the window title), the company that was displayed was TGB, but the company that was really operating was CGR. The picture is taken at the begining of the company turn (tile placement) and as you can see by the red hexagons on the left part, it's really CGR playing and not TGB that has not access to the western part. Furthermore, the company revenue and payout were consistent with CGR and not with TGB. Same type of display issue occured with other companies (i.e. the company displayed was not the company really operating). Eric |

Hello all I replied yesterday but messages bounced back - probably due to the zip attachement I'm trying again. I changed the extension to z.i.p so you need to change it back --- Hello again. Thank you Martin & John for your answers. I hadn't notice 2.0RC1 was "ready to play" but now i did so I have tested again my second game on windows with 2.0RC1. btw, I *love* the new map and the UI improvements ! Some anomaly have disapear, and I found some new. This time I also payed attention to save the game regularly so you will find all this in the attached s.zip file. Most of the saves were made at the begining of each SR and OR. Here we go for my findings >From my previous message > anomaly 1 : the +20 bonus from the port disapears when the first T5 train, while it should only disapear when T6 is bought John : I believe you're correct, this is a bug which has always been there. => Still present in 2.0.RC1. Exemple available in SR5.1 when CA plays. If this can be fixed that would be nice. Workaround available through manual revenue adjustment. > anomaly 2 : situation : company A must buy a train and decides to it from company B. (lets say a T4 for example). Assume company A has only $100 in cash. Rails displays a text like : "you may add up to $250" (i.e. difference between T4 nominal value and cash availble in A). But according to the rules, the president may not add money to buy a train if company A buys from company B, only if it buys from Bank or Open Market > anomaly 3 : situation : at CGR formation, GW has 3 loans and posseses only $34 in cash. According to the rules, the president should only be offered the choice of 0 or 3, but not values in between (1 or 2 are not allowed in this situation). Confirmed by John to be minor bugs. => Still present in 2.0.RC1. Both not a real issue as you can still play by the rules by not using the offered possibilities. So should be fixed in an ideal world, but no urgency. I prefer that you work on the wishlist at the end of this mail :) > anomaly 4 : seen in both games on 1.9.0 : company tokens are not properly displayed on the gray toronto tile #124 => no longer present in 2.0.RC1 where tokens are properly displayed on the gray toronto tile #124. Anomaly solved. > anomaly 5 : seen on 1.9.0 : situation : during the operating round of company A, his president must sell [shares of] company B to raise money according to forced sale rule. As a result, this changes the position of company B on the stock market (drops to lower values), but 1.9.0 doesnt update the company operating order (behaves has if B was still in it's original position before the sale) john : I haven't seen this. If it happens it is a bug. => I haven't tested yet if this can be replicated on 2.0RC1 yet. Will let you know. > anomaly 6 : seen on 1.9.0 : 1.9.0 doesnt update the certificate limit according to the new (lower) number of available companies when one companie disapears during OR. john : Good catch! This is a bug. Steve Thomas's FAQ for the game agrees => I haven't tested yet if this can be replicated on 2.0RC1 yet. Will let you know. > anomaly 7 : seen on 1.9.0 : situation : during stock round, before the purchase of the first T6, player's worth is sometime wrongly displayed at the begining of the stock round. The issue disapears if you save and reload the game. => I could not reproduce the issue on 2.0RC1. However, I found other display issues, see Anomaly 10 below. > anomaly 8 : situation : bankrupcy. during an operating round, forced sales, the president has $63 cash, must raise more cash but cannot sell anything. rails ends leaving $63 in the president's cash and worth, while according to the rules, the president's cash should be reduced to 0 John : This is a bug, and probably applies to most or all games, not just 1856. => reproduced in 2.0.RC1. In fact, the issue in this situation is that the game doesn't really complete bankrupcy as it expects the president to sell something but nothing is available for sale. So the game becomes stuck. > anomaly 9 : my mistake. I made again the computation when replaying the game and rails if correct, I was wrong in my pbem. Forget this one :) New strange anomalie found in 2.0RC1 : Anomaly 10 : display issue and corrupted save files. This took place at the end of OR 5.2, after pressing on the Done button at the end of Marco's BBG (BBG is the last company to operate in OR 5.2). Button Done remains pressed and nothing happens. A second push on the button Done generates a popup message : "Action Marco executed NullAction, mode=Done, OptimalLabel=NULL is not allowed [OK]" Once [OK] is pressed, OR 5.3 seems to start (GW, first company to operate in OR5.3, is displayed on the map window) but the title of the window still indicates "OR 5.2 (2 out of 3)" At that point, I saved the game. Game name was generated automatically with mention of OR5.3 as it should, so the issue was in the title of the window being not refreshed. Then, I quit and reload OR5.3. New issue : saved game cannot be reloaded, the progress bar freezes at 92% while in "initializing loaded game". I then tried to reload saved game made at the begining of OR 5.2 but same issue : same freeze at 92% while in "initializing loaded game". I then tried to reload saved game made during OR5.1, just before CGR creation : this file I could reload. I then proceeded again with the end of OR5.1, then with OR 5.2. Same issue took place on the "Done" button at the end of Marco's BBG : button stays pressed and nothing happens. Second press on the button generates the same error message. [ok] then brings GW at begining of OR 5.3 with a wrong title (5.2) in the window. This time, i continued playing OR 5.3. I could play the game normaly, but noticed a big inconsistency in the company cash displayed in the map window : GW, LPS, CGR all displayed wrong cash company value at the end of the company turn (it was not updated as it should), while in the Status window, the company cash was correctly displayed. TGB cash was not modified during the OR 5.3 so i couldn't say if the display was correct or not. However, BBG then displayed the correct modified company cash value both in map and status windows at the end of it's Payout. I saved just before the final Done at the end of OR 5.3 just in case, then pressed Done. No issue this time, SR 6 started normaly. At that point, I saved SR 6 at it's begining. Then quit and reload : reload was ok. From there I could play normaly up to the end. You have all the saved game files in the attached zip if you want to understand this mess :) > [wishlist] 1 :Add a more general moderator option that allows to transfer shares between bank and open market and player, and that allows to change the position of the shares on the open market. John : I agree. Allow any certificate to be moved between any two hands. => Two uses for this : allow to continue the game after a bug or a former misclick, and allow to accomodate for local rules (i.e. my team plays with slightly different version of CGR share allocation during CGR formation, this would allow us to adapt the repartition given by the official rules). > [wishlist] 2 : During the stock round, in the game status - stock round window, add a "-" to indicate that a player has already sold from a given company. => I saw that something similar (pink background color) was implemented in 2.0RC1, that's great thanks ! new wishlist based on 2.0RC1 experience : [wishlist] 3 : when a company enters the brown area, it's background color in the strock round window becomes brown (good idea) but that brown is much to dark and prevents reading the share value. Please use a less dark brown [wishlist] 4 : I like to play the OR with the OR map in full screen. This works well. I'd like to do the same thing with the status map during the SR, but it keeps receizing to a smaller size after each action. Very annoying. [wishlist] 5 : when company A buys a train from company B, user is promted for the amount payed by A. Allow the user to specify a negative number, like "-x" meaning : all cash from A but $x Allow the user to specify 0, meaning : all the cash from A [wishlist] 6 : during OR, once you have selected a tile to be placed, you must click on LayTile (and then very often on Skip as you dont lay a new token). Nearly all buttons have a keyboard shortcut but LayTile and Skip don't. Please add a keyboard shortcut to each. [wishlist] 7 : please add an option so that the game automatically generates a save file at the end of each company turn during Operating Rounds, and at the end of each Player6 action during Stock Rounds. I dont mind filling my disk (i can clean it after with a few clicks) but I would like to be sure i can revert to a recent save if my computer crashes for any reason. Again, many thanks, this programm will save us hours ! Eric --- Stefan also wrote : > There is no need to replay them in Rails 2.0 now, usually they should be loadable in 2.0 Had I known :) well, i'll get the 1.9.0 files too this evening then. |

(The rule about this situation in 1830 can be read both ways -- depending on whether or not you accept Darwin Bromley's corrections published in THE GENERAL.) > anomaly 3 : seen in both games : > > situation : at CGR formation, GW has 3 loans and posseses only $34 in cash. > > 1.9.0 offers to the president the possiblity to repay from 0 to 3 loans. > > According to the rules, the president should only be offered the choice > of 0 or 3, but not values in between (1 or 2 are not allowed in this > situation). > > reference : loan repayment paragraph page 22 ("the player may repay the > remainder") I argued this point when the code for CGR formation was being written, and I agree with you that it should work your way. (In practice, it doesn't matter because no one ever "partly rescues" a company except by accident.) I will support a motion to change the program to work your way. > anomaly 4 : seen in both games : > > company tokens are not properly displayed on the gray toronto tile #124 I haven't seen this. The company's price enters the Closed box as soon as it fails to pay a dividend, so it does not get a chance to save itself by buying a train. > 1.9.0 doesnt update the certificate limit according to the new (lower) > number of available companies > > reference : 4th paragraph on page 6 of the rules Good catch! The share price of $100 is correct, but the share value should include the reduction since it would be counted that way if the game ended now. > anomaly 8 : seen only in game 2, situation didnt arise in game 1 : > > situation : bankrupcy. during an operating round, forced sales, the > president has $36 cash, must raise more cash but cannot sell anything. > > 1.9.0 ends leaving $36 in the president's cash and worth > > According to the rules, the president's cash should be reduced to 0 > > reference : [bankruptcy] paragraph on page 21 This is a bug, and probably applies to most or all games, not just 1856. > anomaly 9 : seen only in game 2, situation didnt arise in game 1 : > > situation : CGR formation. This would be OK but is not really necessary, because you can use the Events Log window to see who has sold what. |

Greetings all. Short introduction. Im french (so please excuse my non native english). I'm a long time and regular 1856 player. I usually play face to face with a group of friends. I have also organized a couple of 1856 pbem games back in 2000-2002. I've just discovered 18xx rails 1.9.0 a couple a days ago, and my first comment will be a big congratulation to the authors for the amazing work. It's nearly perfect. I've digged back two of my old pbem games to check if rails 1.9.0 would behave normally. Here are my findings (some anomalies and a wish list). I understand that a 2.0 version is under development, so maybe it can help for that. I tryied 1.9.0 under linux on one game, and under windows for the second game if it matters. note : I know that some rules are suject to interpretation, and ymmv. Please let me know if what i consider an anomaly below is in fact a feature :) anomaly 1 : seen in both games : In 1.9.0, the +20 bonus from the port disapears when the first T5 train is bought. According to the rules, the private companies disapear when T5 is bought, but the +20 bonus continues to exist and disapears when the first T6 train is bought. reference : GLSC paragraph on page 5 of the rules anomaly 2 : seen in both games : situation : company A must buy a train and decides to it from company B (lets say a T4 for example). Assume company A has only $100 in cash. 1.9.0 displays a text like : "you may add up to $250" (i.e. difference between T4 nominal value and cash availble in A). According to the rules, the president may not add money to buy a train if company A buys from company B, only if it buys from Bank or Open Market reference : paragraph 5 on page 19 note : this behaviour appears only if company A must buy a train. If company A already owns a train and tries to buy another train from company B, the message isnt displayed. anomaly 3 : seen in both games : situation : at CGR formation, GW has 3 loans and posseses only $34 in cash. 1.9.0 offers to the president the possiblity to repay from 0 to 3 loans. According to the rules, the president should only be offered the choice of 0 or 3, but not values in between (1 or 2 are not allowed in this situation). reference : loan repayment paragraph page 22 ("the player may repay the remainder") anomaly 4 : seen in both games : company tokens are not properly displayed on the gray toronto tile #124 anomaly 5 : seen only in game 1, situation didnt arise in game 2 : situation : during the operating round of company A, his president must sell actions from company B to raise money according to forced sale rule. as a result, this changes the position of company B on the stock market (drops to lower values) 1.9.0 doesnt update the company operating order (behaves has if B was still in it's original position before the sale) According to the rules, public companies operate in share value order reference : operating round paragraph on page 14 anomaly 6 : seen only in game 1, situation didnt arise in game 2 : situation : during an operating round, after T6 has been bought, a company is in C11 ($30) and has no train. It thus enters the void area and disapears. 1.9.0 doesnt update the certificate limit according to the new (lower) number of available companies reference : 4th paragraph on page 6 of the rules anomaly 7 : seen only in game 2, maybe I didnt pay enough attention in game 1 : situation : during stock round, before the purchage of the first T6, player's worth is sometime wrongly displayed at the begining of the stock round. Exemple: Bruce has $117 cash and owns 40% LPS. LPS is worth $100 (H4) and has $300 loans, therefore reducing its value to $70. All private are already sold. Thus, Bruce's worth should be $117+4*$70=$397 but 1.9.0 displays $437 Note that if you then save and reload the game, the correct $397 value is displayed. anomaly 8 : seen only in game 2, situation didnt arise in game 1 : situation : bankrupcy. during an operating round, forced sales, the president has $36 cash, must raise more cash but cannot sell anything. 1.9.0 ends leaving $36 in the president's cash and worth According to the rules, the president's cash should be reduced to 0 reference : bakruptcy paragraph on page 21 anomaly 9 : seen only in game 2, situation didnt arise in game 1 : situation : CGR formation. After all is decided, 5% shares are used. 1.9.0 puts 30% in the open market, while it should have put 25% in the open market and 5% in the bank. whishlist 1 : Add a more general moderator option that allows to transfer shares between bank and open market, and that allows to change the position of the shares on the open market. whishlist 2 : During the stock round, in the game status - stock round window, add a "-" to indicate that a player has already sold from a given company. Thus, "10%-" means that players owns 10% but has already sold from that company, "50%P-" means that the president owns 50% but has already sold from that company, and "-" means that the players owns 0% and has already sold from that company. The goal is that when player X plays, he knows what player Y is or isnt allowed to buy. Remove all the "-" at the end of the stock round, during the operating round. That's it. I hope this helps. Keep up the good job ! Thanks, Eric. |

Every time I see a table, I like to be able to click the column headers to sort. Sometimes, it's useful to sort companies by treasury (to see who is able to buy trains), sometimes alphabetically (if there are a lot of companies), sometimes floated vs. unfloated, sometimes number of shares in particular locations (e.g. sort by number of shares in the pool in 1844 or 1817). In 1880, you want to sort by par value (which is also operating order, but could show you which par values are still available). Some of the columns may not matter, but if the UI is changed to allow sorting by column headers, why not enable all of them? In regard to what information should be available, the answer is of course "all." However, it would be nice to have a single place to go look at all the company information. If I'm on a small screen, I can toggle between viewing the map and viewing the table of companies. If I'm on a large screen, I can display those windows side by side. Right now, we get some of the information in a table attached to the map, and some information in another table in the game status window - and some of it is duplicated in both places. I'd like to have it all in one place that's easy to access. Chris and John: Thanks for your proposals. Some general comments first: * Greater improvements to the UI require substantial code-changes and will only happen over longer time frames. So there is enough time to discuss those. Current changes are small hacks in the current code, so some things are easy to introduce, others are close to impossible. * There is a docking framework that Frederick Weld implemented for the operating round. This allows to separate the Map from the OR Panel. You can activate it in the configuration window or by simply choosing the "ORDocking" configuration profile. * It seems that there is consensus that most information on companies should be moved to the Game Status window. However is there information that is can be removed? * What is the remaining information that should be visible during the Operating Round? > John David Galt: > > If I had my way, companies would be displayed in only one place -- the > Game Status window -- and it would have columns added to be able to show > tile and token lays. The map window should contain only the map and the operating-round controls. If the devs aren't willing to change that, second best would be to make the dividing bar between the map section and the company section of the map window moveable by dragging it with the mouse, the way you can do it in Windows' File Explorer and in Mozilla Thunderbird's main display. This would be especially helpful when trying to play a game with lots of companies (like 18EU or 1837) on a small screen. As it is now, if playing on a computer with a 1024x768 monitor, you can wind up having to go most of the way through 18EU (all the way up to the minor company merger round) before you're allowed to see more than a tiny "letterbox" slice of the map. I'm sure it's even worse on mobile devices. |

Luiz: first thanks for the save files. The bug you reported is actually intended as a feature... ;-) During Tile and Token Lays and Revenue Calculation only the current operating company is shown to maximize the area to display the map. Only during Train Buying all companies are shown. To All: What do you think? There has to be a solution for those games that feature too many companies. The call for save files for 18EU allowed to fix several specific bugs for that game in 2.0. To all Rails 18EU players: I am currently looking for 18EU save files for Rails. Best are End-of-Game files, however intermediate files work too, any Rails version works fine. Rails allows automated testing with existing game files to ensure that new features do not break existing games. However for 18EU there is no full game file and 18EU deviates substantially from 1830. Please send 18EU files directly to my mail address and I will add them to the Rails repository for future testing. Thanks for your help. Stefan |

Bob: If this happens, seems like a defect. Could you share a save file that shows this behavior? Due to the upload issues with sourceforge which corrupted some files, the installation files are in place again with additional md5sum checks that everything should be ok this time. Installation files on sourceforge: http://sourceforge.net/projects/rails/files/Rails/2.0/ In addition all installation files are mirrored on github (with md5sum checksums in the release notes): http://github.com/freystef/Rails/releases/tag/v2.0.RC1 And for those who prefer Webstart: http://rails.sf.net/webstart/rails.jnlp If anything is still awry, please report. Tim: thanks for the information. The upload process to sourceforge was "unstable" today, though I thought that in the end I was succesfull in uploading them correctly. Unfortunately I was wrong, so some of the files were incomplete. I have removed the files for now and will upload new ones tomorrow to both sourceforge and github and compare MD5 checksums. There was one jar missing for Webstart, I added that jar again. Should work again now. Sorry for the delay. I've been away from the community for a long time. This is my first time trying out Rails 2, so I might simply be doing something wrong, but I was unable to run the .jar file or the webstart file on my iMac running 10.0.5 and the latest version of Java 8. When I ran the webstart, I looked at the error details and saw the following: "com.sun.deploy.net.FailedDownloadException: Unable to load resource: http://rails.sourceforge.net/webstart/designgridlayout-1.11.jar" Sincerely, Tim Harrison Games on the Brain LLC www.gamesonthebrain.com On Thu, Sep 10, 2015 at 10:48 AM, Stefan Frey <ste...@we...> wrote: > So this time a Release Candidate. Hi Dave (and everyone else), the current state of the mal-/ad-ware incident is the following: I asked the person who reported the infect to search for any Rails files on his system (download or installed files). In fact there were no Rails files to find. So it is not clear that the (intended) download was the causal reason for the infection. Until now no one else reported a similar experience. In addition I am pretty convinced that the installation files of Rails itself do not carry anything malicious. However keep your browser updated and protected and make sure that you really download the rails installation files and not something else. I have no-script and ad-blocker installed for my browser, so I do not know if the sourceforge and/or its mirrors display ads close to the download links. I will add download links for RC1 on github tomorrow for those who are still wary of sourceforge and post them here. Thanks for asking, Stefan On 09/10/2015 07:40 PM, Dave Berry wrote: > Hi Stefan, > > Has this malware issue been resolved? > > I'd like to install the 2.0 RC but I'm a bit wary based on this report. > > Dave. > > On 02/09/2015 12:47, Stefan Frey wrote: >> Thanks for the link.
