I was figuring the issues is that it's not executable, which it would need to be for a "./script" type command to execute. So what does running "sh rails.sh" produce then? That should work even with simple read permissions. On Fri, 19 Aug 2016, 16:51 John David Galt, <jd...@di...> wrote: > rails.sh is world readable. Just a note, the issue you are currently having isn't related to rails, but rather related to getting java installed. However, after you extract it, /home/jdgalt/Programming/Java should contain the java installation, eg, the javac executable itself being /home/jdgalt/Programming/Java/jdk1.8.0_101/bin/java (some files will exist in .../jdk1.8.0_101/jre/bin/ At least the old official release I have on my system (1.7.12) has a rails.sh, but it is a pretty trivial program. If you use an official release, you probably don't need to worry about compiling, and can just do something like: /home/jdgalt/Programming/Java/dk1.8.0_101/jre/bin/java rails-<version>.jar |

Good day to all Rails users, My name is Alberto and I am from Spain. I am completely new to 18XX and Rails. I have only a little experience with 1830. If there is any other procedure, please let me know. It's the first time I use software such as Rails to participate in online games. Thank you very much for your help. Kind regards, Alberto. |

Good day to all fellow rails users, a serious not correctable bug has been found, and should be fixed by this release. This bug was affecting 1835 games. This is a minor release fixing the following bugs: - 1835 Fixing a bug which would cause the Prussian formation round to be neglected if no Minors would be operating still at Start of Phase 5 while Privates would not have been exchanged. Apparently rails is testing in subsequent phase changes only the fact if theres an unconverted minor, which in your game that isnt the case. So theres no formation round being called at the phase change for Phase 5 in your game. I'll have to fix that and release a 1.9.1 me thinks.. Regards, Martin |

Hi Terry, sorry I have been extremely busy after Christmas. First I need to know which version you did download? I assume 1.9.0? Extracting and then running the shell-file or java -jar rails-1.9.0.jar both start Rails on my Linux system. Could you double-check which version of Java you have installed (use java -version to print that)? The last line of the debug file is only generated if you try to enter the configuration dialog. This is (usually) only possible from the StartUp-Window dialog. What happens if you start Rails game (with "New Game") without trying to enter the Configuratation dialog first? Have you tried to use the 2.0 release candidate on your system? Hope you get Rails running soon. Hi, I'm trying to move away from Windows and have installed elementaryOS on an old laptop to become familiar with Linux. I've downloaded Rails and have extracted the Rails .tar.gz file (extracted everything to the same folder "Downloads"). Running the shell command doesn't do anything, however if I click on the .jar file, Rails does start. But it hangs at around 83% when building the configuration window. I found a log file that is generated ("18xx.log"). The last line of this file is: 2015-12-29 08:36:27 DEBUG Configuration sections with maximum elements of 25 The program hangs at this point whether I am starting a new game or loading an existing game. I'm not sure what the problem is, but could it be that I have not unpacked the files to the proper file folder structure? Where is the program supposed to be unpacked to, and what should the file folder structure/hierarchy look like? Thanks help! |

Eric: Thanks for your further investigation. This is great help. Most likely the issue for loading is related to the other bug/anomaly you reported earlier, which I have fixed in rails_2_maintenance already. However I still have to check that. I will built a release candidate 2 soon, however I have troubles with my internet access from home, so I have to postpone the up-loading. Stefan And to avoid annoying the subscribers to Rails-user: Could you please further report bugs on Rails-devel instead of Rails-users. Rails-users is not intended for (frequent and detailed) bug reporting. Hello all Some more bug reports following this issue. 1) bug with map correction from the situation in 1856_20151031_1804_GW-E16toCA.rail, you can use map correction to continue the game as it should by laying #24 in E16 with orientation SE. File 1856_20151101_aftermapcorrection.rails is a save after GW finishes its turn and next company starts to play. However, 2.0RC1 cannot load from that moment : loading 1856_20151101_aftermapcorrection.rails or any later save file results in an "interrupted load" just before the map correction. 2) In order to further play the game (and to further test), we have decided to check how the game behaves on 1.9.0 However, file 1856_20151031_1804_GW-E16toCA.rail (legit 2.0RC1 file before map correction) could not be loaded on 1.9.0. Maybe that's normal and files are not backward compatible ? So, we have restarted the game from scratch in 1.9.0 The resulting 1.9.0 file is attached as 1856_20151101_1019_GWbug.rails Result : - from that postion, 1.9.0 allows to lay #24 in E16 with orientation SE (normal behaviour) - the file 1856_20151101_1019_GWbug.rails can be reloaded in 2.0RC1, and from that same position, 2.0RC1 forbids to lay #24 in E16 with orientation SE Eric > Message du 31/10/15 21:12 > De : "games.bazin" > A : rai...@li... > Copie à : > Objet : 2.0RC1 cannot lay tile > > > Hello all > > I found what looks like a strange bug in 2.0RC1 - took place in 1856 but doesn't seem 1856 related. Eric: thanks for catching this bug. 1856 is semi-restrictive for tile lays, thus there is a check involved if any of the new track segments is reachable from any station marker for the company laying the tile. Due to some reason only one of the two tokens for GW is considered. And interestingly if one tries to make the same tile lay for LPS only the reversed orientations are allowed. This indicates that the current check somehow only uses one of the tokens and not all of the tokens, which might help to find the true reason. I hope I will get some time tomorrow to look into that. Hello all I found what looks like a strange bug in 2.0RC1 - took place in 1856 but doesn't seem 1856 related. Please see attached save file. GW should be able to lay a green tile #24 in E16 going from it's starting position to CA's starting position, and is not allowed to do so by the game. More precisely, 2.0RC1 allows #24 in E16 with orientation NW (which is normal) but forbids the opposit orientation, which is not normal. Eric |
