Yes, the es_LA is just a "diff" or "patch" for es_ES. es_ES works is
configured as a "default", in case that a string isn't defined in es_LA.
 
But don't worry, no big deal both ways.

Ooops, I don't get this. Do you mean we don't need to upload complete
catalogues, but just a kind of patches, like you would do with code? Anyway,
we really don't know what the differences are right now. Leopold and Gustavo
need to review the translations online first.

The more recent translations for es_LA are in the catalog, unless Leopoldo
and/or Gustavo have done some work online, which I believe they have not.
I'll do the reimport. I know about the specific package import procedure.

Well, a big part of the Spanish translation was my sh*t as well, which I had
done without taking care of the context.

I have just returned from Berlin. Well ... having spent 40 years of my life
in BCN, I think it can't beat Berlin for coolness in any sense. 

Yes, fortunately I'm quite busy now. I will ask a colleague to volunteer for
Catalan. I didn't think this locale was needed in the near future.

I will ask the localizers about the status of their work.

Great to see you're going to do a joint translation. I believe

the quality of the Spanish translation wasn't the best in the

past (that's the problem if it's not a native speaker doing

I believe one of the most important remaining tasks for L10n

is to check the status of the languages that are "incomplete"

and check whether it's due to errors on our side (not importing

files, like in ru_RU), just communication (the translation has

been performed, but it's not yet visible) or if there is still 

work to do.

could you please move the intranet-core catalogue for es_LA I have 

placed in a folder in the /home directory of the l10n-server to the 

package and reimport the messages?

It would allow the LA-Spanish localizers, especially Leopoldo 

Gurman, to 

have something to work on as a base. He and Gustavo Rossel will then 

localize my ES-Spanish draft to LA-Spanish.

On the other hand, please don't reimport the messages for 

es_ES, as I'm 

still working on a joint translation with Miguel Cordova. 

Hope to resume 

work this week, after my visit to what seems to be Europe's most 

exciting city to me.

Would you like to appear in the article "The people 
behind ]project-open[", that we'd include in our V3.4 
press kit? We'll distribute this article to quite a lot 
(~200) of magazines in the area of IT/software and 
general business.

If so, please login at www.project-open.org with your
account (I've checked that all of you have an account
as "Partner"), click on "My profile" and:

1. Upload a reasonable picture. The picture size
   should be something between 100x100 and 300x300.

2. Please fill out the "Short Bio" field with a short
   biography, talking about yourself, your education
   and your professional experience. I've copyied the

have not.  I'll do the reimport. I know about the specific package 
import procedure.

Well, a big part of the Spanish translation was my sh*t as well, which I 
had done without taking care of the context.

I have just returned from Berlin. Well ... having spent 40 years of my 
life in BCN, I think it can't beat Berlin for coolness in any sense.

Yes, fortunately I'm quite busy now. I will ask a colleague to volunteer 
for Catalan. I didn't think this locale was needed in the near future.

I will ask the localizers about the status of their work.

Perfect, I've moved the file into the intranet-core/catalog/.

I haven't imported anything yet, can you please perform this
step yourself. I'm not up to date on where the more recent
translations are - on the DB or the catalog files...
You know that you can import only the files of a specific
package?

Great to see you're going to do a joint translation. I believe
the quality of the Spanish translation wasn't the best in the
past (that's the problem if it's not a native speaker doing
it... (it was myself...)).

Perfect, we've messed it up... I've imported your translations 
and the translation completeness has gone up to about 60% 
(according to http://l10n.project-open.net/acs-lang/admin/,
but maybe I've missed one of your files?).


Btw., we've probably messed it up more then once in the past 
and will mess it up again... Please have some patience with us.
The ]po[ core team consists of just 3 guys, and we have to 
handle everything from coding, bug-fixing and support to sales, 
demos and marketing. And now localization, of course...
But fortunately Michael is carrying a lot of the work on this
part...

So you can tell us openly (no problem!) if we mess it up, and 
we'll try to fix it.

I've imported the strings into the l10n server and set my user's
locate to ru_RU for checking if the import had problems with 
character sets (see below). So the system is there if you want
to take a quick view. Some of the menu tabs seem quite big, I'm
not sure if there are ways to shorten them a bit. I remember the
same issue in German, and it took quite some creativity to find
suitable but shorter expressions...


A minor suggestion concerning the format for "offline translations": 
It would be great if you could change the name of your catalog
files to include your target language ru_RU (example.
"intranet-core.ru_RU.utf-8.xml" instead of 
"intranet-core.en_US.ISO-8859-1.xml"). This way, we could copy
the files in "batch mode" into their locations. This time I had to 
rename them each, which slows down the "cycle type" and may cause 
errors...


Finally, I'd suggest that you update your entry in 
http://www.project-open.org/documentation/language_ru to include
a beautiful link to Janus or a photo and a link to your private 
LinkedIn profile. Maybe you also want to add a short bio there? 
We plan to include the profile of the l10n leads and translators 
as part of the "press kit" for V3.4 (I'll send a separate mail 
out today). I can also setup a separate "partner_dmitry_ulanov"
page if you want.

had a first look at the status of L10n server's /acs-lang/admin/
page... There is quite some advance, and 6 languages seem to be 
in a status already suitable for relase (en, de, es, fr, it, nl). 
Contratulations!

Klaus told me there were some new languages to add to the Wiki.
I've finally added all languages that we might ever support...
However, I didn't check the "Languages" checkbox in the Wiki 
edit-page of the "incomplete" languages. So these languages don't 
appear in the content tree of the Wiki at the moment.

I've uploaded second (biggest) batch of Russian translation to PO server:

Could you please import localized strings back to l10n server so they are
visible in interface?

IMPORTANT!!! To avoid replacement of correct translations made in native PO
Localization mode via user interface by translations that have been made
offline, could you please:
1. Export all translations currently existing on PO l10n server to XML files
and keep them in safe place. 
2. Import translations from the files I uploaded today.
3. Import translations from the files created in step 1 to keep verified
translations on the top of the rest.

Once this is done, could you please let me know so that I can check
translations in context and "polish" them if necessary.

P.S. There are just a few modules left to be localized to Russian. Hope to
finish the whole localization in 1-2 weeks ;-)
BTW do we have a kind of deadline, i.e. date when ]po[ 3.4 official release
is built?
I thought we should have finished in August but translation is still

this group ;-)

that's great news!
I don't know whether there is a test script available. I'll ask Frank 
(he is on vacation now). I should think not, because the values in the 
database might seem correct even though the problem I'm telling you 
about below might have happened.
I think that rather than translation variable names you were overwriting 
the English(US) message. It has happened to me, too. Sometimes, the 
internationalization module shows you the English(US) message as an 
editable field and you happily override the value without knowing. 
Miguel Cordova can give us some insight to this. I thought that once a 
key is defined in the database, when clicking on the red asterisc you 
always get the form with the key name, the English(US) message (non 
editable) and your localization field...

I don't know of any press release being available, but I'm sure it will 
be released in September.

I'm working on the Dutch translation and I believe it is almost finished
now. I've been testing for some time, but I wonder if there is a
testscript available. This maybe looks a bit silly, but at some points
I've got the impression that I was translation variable names. If this is
true, this must be tested in order to avoid errors.

Another question; do you know if there are already press releases
available in which the new version with translations are announced? If so,
I can you send me a copy?

I have been reviewing the new Spanish Terminology page, starting (countdown)
from Z to R. I'd like to check with other spanish-spoken users what
translation fit better in some words where I have doubts

For instance...

I have translated "Staff" as "*Personal*", but maybe is better: "*Plantilla*
"

There are some words that are 100% understood in Spanish... but I propose a
Spanish "convert" in brackets... just in case they should be translated:

Reset (*reestablecer*)
Software (*programas*),
URL (*dirección web*),
Widget (?),
Wiki (?),
Workflow (*Flujo de trabajo* | *Protocolo*),


There are other words that can be translated with a more usual Spanish
word.... or with a word similar to English one...

Radio Buttons -> *Botones de opción* (instead of *botones de radio.* Is this
a better translation?)
Revoke -> *Revocar* (starts with 'r' too)
Save --> *Guardar* (*salvar* starts with 's' too)
Save as... -> *Guardar como*... (*Salvar como*...)
User -> usuario
Member -> usuario (better than '*Miembro*' for a user that belongs to a
group, to avoid a funny joke)

For some common action words... I propose those translations...

Add -> *Añadir*
New + subj. -> *Añadir* (instead of *nuevo* | *nueva*, where possible) +
subj
Delete -> *Borrar*
Remove -> *Quitar*
Show -> *Ver*
View -> *Ver*

[project-open-localization] Search function not working for users

I've noticed that the ln10-server's search function does not work for user searches.
Have you tried to search for any registered user in the system?
We should report this to the core team. I don't have the search function enabled in my local system, and I had not played with it until now that I'm using the localization server.

MY CONTEXT
I'm developing locally for a customer, and I hope I can finish on time to
get it together with the ]po[ 3.4 final version in september / october. I
need a better Spanish translation than the current one.

HOW I'M DOING:
What I'm doing is (as my first option) translating directly in l10n server (
http://l10n.project-open.net/), so I try to make translations only when I'm
sure that they are correct :) (I use to try locally the hard ones, and then
update de l10n server). I'm reviewing timesheet now. I'm interested in
workflow too, maybe I could check it in a few weeks, although I've
translated the most obvious words, I'm not 100% sure they are the best
translations.

It would be great If we can agree with a generic translation so that we can
update the l10n server to share with everyone in the next ]po[ version.

TIMESHEET TAB:
"Horas" might be the best (short) translation for Timesheet.

PAGE TITLE:
IMO, for page titles we don't need "hoja" word, so it could be "Control de
tiempos" or "Horas trabajadas" itself.

but this was for internal use, and all the members of our team know what 
is meant with this term. The term I was about to use is "Hoja de control 
de tiempos", which is rather related with "Métodos y tiempos" 
(Production Planning) but I think fits in here.
"Hoja de control de tiempos" is obviously too long for the menu tabs.
"Horas" and "Horas de trabajo" (or "Horas trabajadas") is fine in my 
oppinion.

BTW Are you translating locally? I have my own Spanish version of the 
user interface (have been using it since 2005), and it would be great if 
we could coordinate/merge our translations.
