The 'Backup Folder' is the HotSync backup folder (the folder where it stores all files and applications). MPC scans this folder for databases it knows of and list them in the browser window. The reason why the browser window is empty is because you didn't specify the backup folder and the default folder doesn't contain any Palm PDB files. (I should change the code so it tries harder to find the backup folder) > It appears that this is a one-way translator, .pdb to > tab-delimited text file. Yep, it's one way only, to cite the FAQ: =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D Why is MPC not able to create databases? Mainly because we don't need the ability to create databases 8-). Another problem is that creating databases would mean that we need to spend a lot more time on testing to make sure that everything works as expected ... which means that we would have to charge for MPC.=20 =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D To be honest, MPC is a one-person spare-time project done when I don't need to do anything else (including playing with the kids, feeding the cats, ect) ... which means that I have limited time for doing this. I could make a version that creates databases also (for some applications) but it would require a lot more testing (since writing data is more complicated than reading) which in turn would mean that I had to take time from "get money to pay the bills" projects ... which means that we would need to charge for MPC since I can't do the other stuff. > A bit confusing, but functional. When I launch the program, I get a dialog that says "No Preferences Set", along with an option whether or not to set a location of a 'backup catalog'. I have chosen 'No', and then I get a 'File Browser' window, which doesn't appear to have any function. I can't drag-and-drop into the window, for example. Using the menu commands, I then open a pilot-db .pdb file and am asked to specify the output file. With the very simple database that I have tested, I have been able to open the subsequent file in AppleWorks as a spreadsheet, and it looks as though I could define database fields and import the data. Drag-and-drop also works to open the .pdb file for output. It appears that this is a one-way translator, .pdb to tab-delimited text file. A bit confusing, but functional. - Don -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Don V. Zahniser <irn...@ez...> |

MPC 1.8 is released <http://www.mootjelitt.com/mpc.html>. MPC is a Mac program that can translate various Palm databases into some some kind of data that can be used by "normal" Mac programs. Version 1.8 adds support for Pilot-DB. jem --=20 Jan Erik Mostr=F6m je...@mo... www.mostrom.pp.se |

I'll probably try to get some pointers in one of the perl related=20 newsgroups. See you, Uwe |

(0xB8=184) Looking into this, I realize that I've worked on pilot-db conversion scripts more than I've used pilot-db itself. :-) One thing I've noticed about the AppInfo blocks in my pdf files is that their offset is always a multiple of 4 (and often a multiple of 8). I'm guessing those 2 bytes are filers and that the correct thing to do is ignore them. Emmanuel |

I have 2 (Pilot-Db) databases one has 58 and the other B8 (both hex) as AppInfo offset. They have different record numbers. So this might be due to something called record index. The second one is my test DB. (0xB8=184) I think that these two bytes might be the mysterious 2 NUL bytes just before the AppInfo block. The author of PDB.pm seems to have had some trouble when expecting/reading them. He made explicitely sure that they are ignored. So no need to worry either! :-) This is a happy day! :-) See you, Uwe |

For a pilot-db file, this should contain the name of the database, the extra bytes being zeroed out. All the pilot-db databases I've ever handled have an AppInfo offset of 88 which means that the pdb header is 136 bytes long. I have no idea what bytes 182 and 183 contain. Emmanuel |

Hi, out there on CPAN there is the p5-Palm pakage to access the backup database files after sync and as a add-on to coldsync (IIRC). I'm on the way of implementing a helper class for this package that can be used just like the others (Memo, Address,...) to access the contents of Pilot-Db files. It is capable to read a database, acess and change the basic data types, write the data back to a new file and have this synchronized back to the palm. Fields/types not yet supported for using or changing are: Link,Linked,Calculated,Note. These are just (hopefully) copied back as they were read. Also it is not yet possible to change the AppInfo. (I.e.: Defaults, Database structure, etc.) It has been tested on Pilot-Db 1.0.3 so far. I would like some input on other versions of Pilot-Db and general comments as well ofcourse. Someone like to volunteer? For those familiar with the P5-Palm package I've got a direkt question: When writing back the data to a palm file, some of the Header bytes (PDB header, not AppInfo) get zeroed out. (Offsets into the file are 16-32 and 183-184) This does not seem to prevent reading them back to the palm device. Can anyone comment on that? See you, Uwe |

Hello, I previously used a Psion Sienna and would like to import the database information from this organiser to my Palm Zire. As Palm Zire normally doesn't have a database application in which you can built your own database I was looking on the web and found pilot-db. So what's next....?? I can export the Sienna database in several formats .dbf, *.csv, Microsoft access format But how can I import this data into pilot-db? Hope anyone can help.... Trudie |

re" 2. copy-paste in note fields" - I had this problem once, but was unable= to repeat it. -----Original Message----- From: pil...@li... [mailto:pil...@li...]On Behalf Of Fabrice Noilhan Sent: Saturday, 12 April 2003 2:57 To: pil...@li... Subject: [pilot-db-list] some ideas Hi, Thanks for this great app! using pilotdb (1.1b2) for a couple a months, I have some suggestions, yet= not the time to start to implement them. I may have missed some obvious tricks, so feel free to comment these ideas! 1. "set" instruction It would be nice if one could use scripts to set fields. For instance, I have a todo-list database. I would like to ease my work using views: a normal view and a special "to be done today" view. With a script, I would like to be able to set the deadline to today when I create a new record using the "to be done today" view. 2. copy-paste in note fields I am not able to use copy-paste in note fields. Doing this would be quite convenient.=20 3. Title and note fields I do not fully understand the "make first line title" checkbox. When I check this while writing a note, it works. But the status of this checkbox does not seem to be stored anywhere thus creating some=20 synchronisation issues.=20 So I would rather prefer to have in the note field a first line labelled "title" which I could fill or not. Moreover it is difficult to know whether a note is empty or not. Wouldn't it be possible to have something to show that? 4. link with Datebook and Todolist I enjoy the addressbook plugin and would appreciate the above-mentioned plugins as well! 5. Bug-report? Using a list component, with defaults value A, B and C, I can create numerous records and run a "report" on this field. Say 8 A, 4 B, 3 C, 0= Other. I add then another possible value "D" to the list field, rebuild the=20 database. Then adding 1 "D" record and running report again. It reports 8 A, 4 B, 3 C and 1 Other.=20 Rescanning the base does not help. Like Fabrice Noilhan and others, I am very pleased with pilotdb, and I'm grateful for this great program. I have been using scripts quite a bit, and from my point of view, the suggestion which is the top of my wish list would be a set of say 10 constants stored with each database which could be entered via a dialogue invoked from the menu, and then used within a script as e.g %k3 or whatever. That alone would increase the versatility enormously. If a script could also write to these constants, so much the better. Barry Harridge |

I have finally had the time to put together a beta for a Pilot-DB translator for MPC <http://www.mootjelitt.com/mpc.html>.=20 I'm not a user of Pilot-DB myself so I'm not the best person to test it (this beta version have only had VERY limited testing) so I would be very grateful if you could test it and see what works and what doesn't (I'm pretty sure there are some bugs for calculated fields). You can download the program at <http://www.mootjelitt.com/MPC1.8b3.sit> jem --=20 Jan Erik Mostr=F6m je...@mo... www.mostrom.pp.se |

Shouldn't you see=20 00 00 -> String 00 01 -> Boolean 00 02 -> Integer=20 etc as given by the DB_Create function in db3.c ? This also corresponds to marc's translation of the app info block=20 we examined a few weeks ago. Perhaps you are looking at the wrong appinfo chunk? -Scott |

I decided to finish my Pilot-DB =3D> Mac translator this weekend (before I= once again get something else to do 8-) and as usual I seem to be missing something. When I look in the appinfo block to check the field types I get 0001 =3D> String 0010 =3D> Note 0000 =3D> Boolean 0005 =3D> Integer 0001 =3D> Float 0002 =3D> Date 0008 =3D> Time 0003 =3D> List What I understand is why I see 1 both for String and Float ... I'm sure I'm missing something but what? jem --=20 Jan Erik Mostr=F6m je...@mo... www.mostrom.pp.se |

Hi, Thanks for this great app! using pilotdb (1.1b2) for a couple a months, I have some suggestions, yet not the time to start to implement them. Doing this would be quite convenient. 3. Title and note fields I do not fully understand the "make first line title" checkbox. When I check this while writing a note, it works. But the status of this checkbox does not seem to be stored anywhere thus creating some synchronisation issues. So I would rather prefer to have in the note field a first line labelled "title" which I could fill or not. Say 8 A, 4 B, 3 C, 0 Other. I add then another possible value "D" to the list field, rebuild the database. Then adding 1 "D" record and running report again. It reports 8 A, 4 B, 3 C and 1 Other. Rescanning the base does not help. Fabrice |

Hello I have one single question. Is there a way to edit the new "about box" in a database version 1.0.4. Many thanks Peter |

I'm using pilot-db 1.1.0B1. The instruction say when first used it should've asked me if I wanted to use tiny fonts (it didn't) and even though I click hi-res in the option, the fonts are still normal size. I use small fonts with Datebk4. Do I also need to have special fonts installed? Thanks! |

Mac sync problem solved After the crash, I found that when I transfered the backup files to restore the palm, I was using version 1.03 and have since downloaded version 1.04 and it now works when transferred with OS X and Palm Desktop 4.0. I did not have to retransfer the dbs, but was able to read the previously unreadable db files on the palm when I upgraded. Thanks, great db app, Michael Miller This email has been scanned for viruses by MessageLabs. |
