I have been looking through the back mail list messages, and cannot find if the Mac sync issue has been resolved. My palm crashed, and I cannot get my databases to open after transferring the backup dbs to the Palm. Michael Miller This email has been scanned for viruses by MessageLabs. |

I think they can sell it if they want to, they just need to state that it's based on GPL code, give credit to the authors and allow anyone to get the source code of their new program for free (which they seem to do....) I agree that it's a pretty lame idea. Perhaps that's why they don't seem to be getting very many downloads. But perhaps some other people on this list can ring in on their opinions. We can always send mail to the free software foundation, I think they're the ones that try to keep up on this sort of thing... -Scott (BTW, I didn't see anything that looked like a take of off db, perhaps they haven't figured out how to compile it yet ;) ) |

Hi, I have noticed that a company called 9.95 soft (search for "9.95" in Palmgear) copies OpenSource GNU GPL software, changes the name and the optics a little bit and sells the software for 9.95$. They might do this with Pilot-DB too. http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?sid=449245D1-070E-4BF5-9D6 D117CD3A566A2&prodID=47895 All the programs that they offer have been copied. None of them have been developed by the Company! 9.95 Safe copied from KeyRing 9.95 Chess copied from OpenChess 9.95 Calc copied from Bez Calculator 9.95 Clock copied from BigClock 9.95 Fuel copied from Fuel Log 9.95 Bible copied from Bible Reader All the above programs were developed under the GNU GPL License. After discussing with them they have finally added a note stating the programs on which their programs are based on. A hidden link to the source files is also available. Still, are the allowed to sell their slightly (optically) changed software?? Here is an excerpt of the GPL licence: 2. You may modify your copy or copies of the Program or any portion of it, thus forming a work based on the Program, and copy and distribute such modifications or work under the terms of Section 1 above, provided that you also meet all of these conditions: a) You must cause the modified files to carry prominent notices stating that you changed the files and the date of any change. b) You must cause any work that you distribute or publish, that in whole or in part contains or is derived from the Program or any part thereof, to be licensed as a whole !!!!!!!!!! at no charge to all third parties under the terms of this License!!!!!!!!!. Is this permitted in your opinion. If not, would you help me protest? Thanks, Hans Ajiet Holtkamp |

Hi, it's me again. I need to change the GUI so that I can edit, not just create table schemas... My question is this. In pilot-db on the palm, when you alter your schema, what are the rules for rebuilding? What types can be converted to what, and what happens when columns change positions? Is there a function in the C code that I can read to figure this out? Trever |

Hi, I've been working on CSV import for the JPilot-DB ( http://jpilot-db.sourceforge.net ) tools and GUI and I think I have it working well. However, I'd like to write more tests for my CSV parser, so if you have any db-tools IFO configuration files and CSV files ( like test.ifo and test.csv) that you use regularly. If you could send them to me I'd really appreciate it. Please send to tre...@co... . BTW, the csv import GUI is working within the JPilot-DB GUI. However, it's just in CVS now, so it's not in the release yet... Thanks! Trever M. Shick |

DB uses Categories to identify items from recent searches, and to quickly swap between different filters, so the category data structure is already in use. But perhaps the greater question is why would you want categories per se? Wouldn't this be best defined as simply another field in the database, like a list? You could easily emulate categories with such a field and a set of filters, and this is a much more powerful representation. > > Great app and getting better all the time. > Larry > Glad you like it! -Scott |

All databases. from baseline to top, the line is inverted. From baseline down, it is not (e.g. the below-the-line parts of 'y', 'p', 'g' etc. is still black on ... err... green :-) And if I move the stylus, nothing changes, stil the same db is selected. > > 4- Filters - I think that "search" is not sufficient for filtering. Trever, I put an updated copy of script.c into CVS today. It documents the mapping between various operators and their bytecode (examples, however, are yet to be included ;) ) hope this helps, -Scott |

Feature suggestion: It occurs to me that a good deal of Palm Portable keyboard support is already in Pilot-DB with the jog dial code. There's just some small areas that would really finish off the ability to get basic keyboard functional. The Handera Jog dial simply sends Fieldnext and FieldPrev virtual characters. These can also be entered with graffiti and the up down cursors on the Palm portable keyboard. Thus, once you've pushed in the jog dial, you can in fact navigate the highlight bar with either the PPK or graffiti currently from record to record in the record list view, or field to field in a record. In fact the record edit view is even better because the highlight bar appears as soon as you enter the FieldNext or FieldPrev virtual character either by graffiti or the keyboard. There's no need to first push the jog dial in. It might be nice if the record list mode worked this was too, as other jog dial enabled apps do. I note you can also bring up the highlight bar in the record list by hitting Enter on the keyboard, and the record is selected (opened for editing) with an additional Enter press. It just seems to me that the highlight bar should work the same way in the record list view as is does in the record edit mode (i.e. appear as soon as you enter a FieldNext or FieldPrev virtual character). The remaining issues that would need additional coding... -Currently there doesn't seem to be a keyboard or graffiti action that can set focus on the field. Meaning that when jogging or FieldNext'ing to a record field, even though the cursor blinks in that field you can't input text with either graffiti or the keyboard. You first need to tap the field. Once you've tapped on a field with the stylus, you can enter text in any other field regardless if you navigate to it with the jog dial, Tab/Shift Tab character, or FieldNext FieldPrev character. It's just that initial tap that's getting in the way. -There's seems to be no way to exit the record via graffiti or keyboard. And here too there seems to be a Handera jog dial inconsistency. With the jog dial you can leave the record with either the back/escape button, or by pushing in the jog dial. So pushing in the jog dial both enters and exits the record. Normally only the back/escape button should exit. And while enter (keyboard or graffiti) enters into a record from the list mode, enter doesn't save the record and return you to the list view. For good keyboard support, any or all of the keyboard virtual characters for Enter, OK, and Done could/should do this. -And the last remaining function to support would seem to be the "New" virtual character. Which is "Fn Space" on the PPK. Both in the Record list mode to start a new record, and the Database list view to start a new database. Though I'm aware in the record list view this can be accomplished with Command N, it would be good to trap for both. It nice that most of the other major menu options have Command shortcuts that can be leveraged with the keyboard. I just wonder if Enter virtual character (graffiti and keyboard) might be trapped in many of the dialogs for activating the default button. For example you can bring up Find a database with Command F, and the focus is set on the text field so you can immediately enter the text to find. However if the Enter character was trapped for you wouldn't have to tap the Find button. At the end of the text entry you could enter the diagonal stroke if you using graffiti entry, or the Enter key on the keyboard. There is a work around in the mean time for those with a good memory for keyboard tricks, you can hold Ctrl and Alt and the first letter of the onscreen button you want to push (in this case F for Find), and "push" the button with the keyboard. The feature doesn't work in dialogs with two buttons starting with the same letter, and I haven't checked to see if any of those occur in Pilot-DB. Anyway, a but of a ramble, but hopefully some useful thoughts. On a side note I'm amazed you got so much functionality in Pilot-DB already with the current small size. I noticed the other day that SmartList/ThinkDB is over 500K now. It's got more polish, glitz and *some* nice stuff, there's no way it has almost 400K worth of more functionality. And in a couple areas it has some catch-up to do since 1.1B2 |

If readers have not yet tried jpilot-db, I have to say, this is the first Java GUI Application that I've seen, since the first time Java was introduced 'eons' <grin> ago that gives me hope that Java is a viable programming language. Jpilot-db comes up faster than any other Java application I have seen, the application works very nicely - certainly there are things that a user such as myself which uses primarily Unix has to learn about the MDI interface, but I found it easy enough to learn. Earlier versions of JPilot-db had some things about it that I found confusing, but the developer has enthusiastically been improving the application (and fixing bugs) on a regular basis. I know I encourage anyone like myself who has always thought "yuck, Java, too slow, too ugly, etc." to give the application a look, particularly if you find Windows only applications at best unusable (since I only have access to Unix systems most of the week). -- Tcl - The glue of a new generation. <URL: http://wiki.tcl.tk/ > Larry W. > I'm looking for the internal structure of the calculated field's data in a > record > as well as the bytecode "language"... Hmm. May I should make a document about this ;) I will give you a quick overview, and then try to add details over the weekend and send you the notes: There are two important data structures for calculated fields, the stored values themselvs which I believe is covered in the format.txt that has been circulating, and the scripts. I'll just go into the scripts here. Scripts are stored in the AppInfoBlock, a normal script (i.e. one that is associated with a field in the schema) is stored in the field's CHUNK_FIELD_DATA chunk. This has the following format: Int8 bytecode_sz; Int8 version_flag (currently 0x20) Int8 access_requirements (see below) Int8 returnType (return type, if known) Int8 bytecode[] (an array of bytecode_sz) Access Requirements: This indicates wht the script is going to do, it is a set of flags selected from: NO_EXTERNAL_ACCESS // is completely self contained FIELD_READING // reads fields from a record SINGLE_RECORD_READING // reads fields within a single 'current' record MULTI_RECORD_READING // reads fields from multiple records ARRANGING // may move/reorder records All of the info in this structure is determined when the script is compiled, and depends on the exact set of operations that are used in the script. Because I didn't want to store the text version of the script and the bytecode, I made a bytecode compiler that would allow the original script to be recovered after a decompilation process. This means that there are some aspects of the bytecode that are perhaps redundant or overly verbose, but in all does save space. Basically, all the compiler does is map the text strings onto tokens in the bytearray. Tokens are delimilated by one of these flags: ENTER_8_BIT (1) (a function pointer) ENTER_16_BIT (2) (a function pointer, plus an 'invisible' argument) EXIT (3) (end of function arguments) FIELD_NAME_REFERENCE (4) (not used) FIELD_ID_REFERENCE (5) (a reference to a field) LITERAL_STRING (6) LITERAL_INTEGER (7) LITERAL_FLOAT (8) LITERAL_DATE (9) LITERAL_TIME (10) Ok, I just realized this is a bit complicated for a quick overview, and you're definitely going to need to look a bit at the C code. This weekend, however, I will lay out an overview of how the bytecode is generated, and illustrate some examples. I'll put this all into script.c so it will be easy (hopefully) to see how things are working. -Scott |

I'm looking for the internal structure of the calculated field's data in a record as well as the bytecode "language"... basically, my project (jpilot-db.sourceforge.net) supports all the fields now except calculated and i'd love to put the calculated field in. However, I don't have the information. I suppose I could figure it out, but I was hoping that somebody on this list intimately familiar with the byte code/calculated field could help me. Trever M.
