Yes.

When you get a new .pot file, just back up your po file (just to be
safe) and then run

msgmerge -o he.po.new he.po gaim.pot && mv -fv he.po.new he.po

This should pick out the usable lines for you. If it doesn't work
(which should not happen) you have your backup :D

It will also try to "guess" some new strings and mark them "fuzzy".
You'll need to go over the fuzzy strings somewhat carefully; sometimes
there are subtle but important changes.

There are few changes from the oldstatus branch to the new main branch.
I copied my translation from 1.5 (oldstatus) to main, and got these
stats:
2034 translated messages, 154 fuzzy translations, 37 untranslated
messages.
So, it's less than 200 strings. That's not so bad, is it?

Not stupid, no.  While there will be alot of changes in 2.0.0, a
reason we will give a longer than normal string freeze when we go to
release it, your work in the oldstatus branch will still carry over.
Buddy list strings, error messages, and many of the preferences have
not changed.  The conversations also remain substantially the same.

I never thought about this. But then now that I realize it might

The result... no, "ui_requirement" is *not* a good indication of
importance; there are many important strings without this flag.

The way I'd go about it would be just to bring up gaim and see
what is on the screen. If it's in English when it shouldn't be,
or if it's wrong and bugs me, it obviously is important :-)

However, this obviously would not work for the current CVS
version (HEAD), so I guess I'll just take guesses on whether
it looks like something I would easily see; if it looks like
there's a high chance I'd see it it's probably important.

Also, most of the protocol-specific error messages can be
treated as "not important for the time being" (if those are
among the untranslated strings). They are quite difficult to
translate and most of them are very rarely seen.

I'm trying to do the Hebrew translation, but not making much headway - 
there's just soo many missing strings... Are the flags over every string a 
good indication as to what to translate first? I keep seeing these:

#. *< version

#. Explanation

Obviously, "ui_requirement" is very important. But how important is it? 
More important than "name"?

My point is this: Given that I doubt I have the energy do really get 
everything done, what should I do first? What is most critical to get done 
so people can use Gaim?

It is my understanding that we do not intend to release any more
versions of Gaim from the current branch, and that future releases
will be from our current development version; unfortunately, this
means that translations will need a great deal of updating before our
next release.  I will add your translation to our CVS repository, but
I am not sure it will make an official release before requiring
updates.

providing translation updates to the Gaim team is via a sourceforge

hi, i downloaded http://gaim.sourceforge.net/i18n/sk.po and started 
translating it. Now i have over 50% translated but i found some of the 
strings are missing in this file. The sk.po in gaim 1.5.0 sources is newer 
than the one located on the site. Why? I don't now. You can try it on your 
own if you don't believe. The one on the site has 2247 strings, the one in 
sources 2251.

Hi

I just tested it with 1.5.0 in Chinese and Polish. In Chinese
locale the string is translated, while in Polish locale the string
is not translated, showing "Show Ti_mestamps" (note position of
the underscore).

In 1.4.0 the string was translated in both locales.

I.e., it seems that the translator was working on a 1.4.0 po file
but used in with gaim 1.5.0.

You can try your translations the right way by installing them in your
gaim's search path. For a normal gaim-package you'd have to do "msgfmt
sk.po -o /usr/share/locale/sk/LC_MESSAGES/gaim.mo"

If you compiled it yourself, you should replace /usr/share
with /usr/local/share. 

gaim crashes when you try it while gaim is running. You should
restart it. :)

Then replace (as root) the sk.gmo in your gaim with the resulting sk.gmo file.

This should work, but I find that sometimes it doesn't. (I don't know why.) If it doesn't work for any reason you'll have to recompile gaim.

(The "cv" is not necessary, but if there are errors in the file the "c" will tell you, and if there are no errors the "v" will show you some information, so I always use "-cvo" instead of just "-o".)

i am trying to update slovak .po file, it's going slowly because of many 
ad-hoc and badly translated  words etc... it hasn't been updated since 2002 
so you can imagine it.

my question: can i try the translated .po file without having to recompile all 
the gaim? i figured out i need to replace the existing .mo file. but how to 
convert .po to .mo?
