Thanks for your observations. I'm using PSP 9.0, which I've always used in
previous versions to create these images from a scanner. All images on my
site use this method. However, since I wrote the query, I find other .jpg
files created this way also have a problem on the web, but not on the
desktop. Older files are OK. Any ideas?

Was just checking through my phpGedView log file (not something I do very
often!) and notice this error message (real names removed):

curious to know how long it has taken you to create this. I\'m very

Now, I'm assuming that there was some sort of error in the saving/sending of
this message since I never actually recieved this message. I have tried to
reproduce conditions under which it may have occurred but I always manage to
send the message OK.
 
phpGedView is V3.1 - I'm just about to apgrade when I get a chance.
 
Any ideas?

I managed download the image files using my browser, but I can't view 
them in any application - the image files look corrupt to me.

If you have an MD5 checksummer, you could check the originals to see if 
they have been modified en-route:

I had a problem where some of my jpegs were not viewable in some apps.  I 
ran them through "jpegtran" (http://www.rt.com/man/jpegtran.1.html), and 
that solved the problem for my pictures.  However, I tried to run your 
images through it and it gave an error:

"Sampling factors too large for interleaved scan"

...which to me just confirms that the images are corrupted somehow.  If 
you can view them in some application, try saving as some other format, 
then in a different application convert them back to jpegs.  It could be 
that whatever program created these files has some bug in it that 
produces duff jpegs.

The names might be off by a single letter.  I was able to "View GEDCOM 
Record" and see the FILE names, but I can't see your images folder.  You 
need to compare the "images" folder contents to the FILE names.

You didn't ask, but I think you are supposed to create a separate 
"Residence" for each address instead of grouping them together.  Then 
you can put the image with each address.

As Daniel suggested, if you are really planning on starting from scratch =
on your genealogy data with PGV you should seriously consider using the =
GDBI project as a client to PGV.

But to answer your question, to add more related people, go to the =
"close relatives" tab of the person you created and you will be able to =
add spouses and parents.

It is currently not possible to add unrelated people to PGV online.  You =
would have to edit the gedcom manually to do this.

PGV was not designed for extensive editing.  Most people do all their 
editing offline with their favorite genealogy program and then upload the 
GEDCOM.

If you want to do everything through PGV, you should use GDBI (which is my 
project).  It is a program you run on your PC, so it is much faster and more 
powerful than using web pages.  It writes directly to the PGV database.

It is better to use PGV/GDBI than an offline editor because you will 
eventually give access to your relatives, and they will add info, and your 
offline data becomes obsolete.

Haven't noticed this mentioned or resolved in latest beta:

Hi Donna,

You need to turn off the "Require Visitor Authentication" setting by
going to Admin->Manage Gedcoms->Edit Configuration.  Then under the
advanced settings, set the "Require Visitor Authentication" to "no".

There are a couple of ways to add pictures to people.  If you already
have added the pictures in the genealogy application that you used to
create the gedcom, then you can just upload the pictures to the media
directory.

If you have not already added photos, or your genealogy program does not
export them in the gedcom, then you can add them using PGV by first
uploading the pictures using the Admin->Upload Media page and then
associating the images with people in your gedcom by going to their
individual record, clicking on the media tab, and then clicking the add
media link.

Hi Jens,

These errors mean that your Gedcom didn't get imported correctly.  It
looks like your gedcom index file at index/gedcom.ged_index.php is an
empty file.  You should erase that file from the index directory and try
to import the gedcom again. =20

Sometimes FTP doesn't transfer all of the files correctly.  If you still
end up with an empty gedcom index file, then you should upload all of
the files from the PhpGedView package again, and then import the gedcom
again.

Hi Donna,

I'm afraid you have set the "require users to authenticate" to yes.
You can change this setting in the option for your GEDCOM file.

I wouldn't know how to allow users to add pictures to their files, but
have you checked the docs? Maybe someone else can shed some light on
this one.

Is this the 1 PLAC line in the geadcom HEAD record?  Normally the place
hierarchy is specified there.  But it doesn't have to be, and most
genealogy programs, including PhpGedView, don't really care what the
hierarchy is as long as the commas delimit the hierarchies when you
enter in the places.  In other words as long as you are consistent with
entering 1 PLACE Street, Suburb, City, Country throughout your gedcom
then PhpGedView will keep them all in the same hierarchy level.  If you
don't know a level, then you should leave the space blank with the
comma.  For example, if the Street was unknown, you would enter=20
1 PLAC , Suburb, City, Country

And if you only knew the country you would put
1 PLAC , , , Country

I'm not sure why you have places with p_level !=3D 0 and p_parent_id =3D =
0.

The easiest way to reindex all of the places is to reimport your gedcom.
This does not mean that you have to upload it again.  Just go to
Admin->Manage Gedcoms->Import and reimport the gedcom into the database.
During the reimport all of the old data is dropped and the data is
reindexed.

First thing would be to make sure the places are encoded correctly.
After reimporting the gedcom, check to see if there are any p_level !=3D =
0
and p_parent_id =3D 0 places or if they only appear after editing.  Then
get back to me and we can work from there to figure out what happened.

I've been editing the place names of individuals for the last few days to get them into a standard format (street, suburb, city, country) etc, so that i use placelist.php to find events at a particular place.





Question 1...

There is no format specified at 1 PLAC in the gedcom, so its using/expecting/ignoring? the default, i.e. City, County, Stat/Province, Country.

Is it important to specify something after 1 PLAC?  If so, how do i specify my format? "1 PLAC Street, Suburb, City, Country"?





Question 2...

Checking the Place Hierarchy page, I noticed that the places that I edited no longer appear in the Hierarchy.  I checked pgv_places and can see a whole bunch of places with p_level != 0 and p_parent_id = 0.



Is there a way to get the places re-indexed?  I'm guessing re-uploading the gedcom will re-index pgv_places for me, but there's got to be an easier way?
