Can anybody shed any light on the following please:-

When "zooming in" on http://rmhh.co.uk/tree2/pedigree.php?rootid=ID.510
Kenneth Frank VEARNCOMBE, Website is shown, but without a link. However,
when opening his page, http://rmhh.co.uk/tree2/pedigree.php?rootid=ID.510 ,
the link is now active. 

What, if anything can I do about this? This is only one example.

Thanks to Dan and Chris for your swift help!

Of course, it was right there staring me in the face - the ampersand
character!
Whilst they are OK for most things, it appears that they don't always
resolve in php.
All fixed now and thanks again for your help.

Rodney,

That is nice customisation of the pages - well done!

In my (limited) experience, missing images usually have to do with either of
the main or the thumbnail pictures not being in the directory where they are
supposed to be, or more often and more subtly, the extension is speicified
in lower case (or upper case) in the gedcom, whilst the extension on the
image file is in the other (wrong case).. Thus jpg is not the same as JPG.

The trouble is that some genealogy programs render the input all as lower
case (whatever the file name) whereas when you upload the image file it
carries across usually  as per the file name (exceot that some FTP programs
will allso send JPG as jpg (just to confuse you!)

In fact I can only see one missing file on the page under the media tab, the
first page seems to be OK.

The 2 files have "&" in their name, and that is a "special character". 
Try renaming them:

D:\GENEALOGY\LEGACY\PICTURES\po_ken&colleague.jpg

Can someone please help. 

Having just updated the site after a death, two images are not appearing,
although the thumbnails are there. The program reports the files are
missing, but they are definitely in the Media folder where they should be.
The names are correct - the thumbnails were created from them!

I have a lot of experience using LDAP to store and authenticate users, =
and it would be pretty simple to get PhpGedView to authenticate against =
an LDAP server.  But the user table is pretty dynamic as users login and =
out and change their settings, so I'm not sure that you could get away =
from at least some MySQL storage.

I have no idea if it would be possible to import the gedcom individuals =
into an LDAP directory and then run PGV from the LDAP.  The PGV devel =
team doesn't really have the time to experiment on this.  From my =
personal experience I would say that LDAP is slower than MySQL, but I've =
never used it for something like this.

I'm not sure what the GoDaddy tech support people are talking about.
Since the windows permissions are completely different from linux
permissions, changing the permissions in Windows won't have any affect
on the permissions once the file gets to linux... assuming you are using
a linux server.

These functions are enabled by default, using the bundled expat library.
You can disable XML support with --disable-xml. If you compile PHP as a
module for Apache 1.3.9 or later, PHP will automatically use the bundled

expat library configure PHP --with-expat-dir=3DDIR, where DIR should =
point
to the base installation directory of expat.=20

The windows version of PHP has built in support for this extension. You
do not need to load any additional extension in order to use these
functions.

You will probably either need to recompile PHP or upgrade to a newer
version of PHP. =20

You can skip the option to convert your gedcom to UTF-8 though, by
converting it manually before uploading it.  You can use the windows
notepad to do this.  Open your ged file in notepad and then choose the
save as option and select UTF-8 as the encoding.  Also change the 1 CHAR
ANSI line in your gedcom file to 1 CHAR UTF-8

The entry should be something like 'upload_max_filesize'

add your gedcom though.  FTP your gedcom to a location on the server.  =

form.  Then you will be able to continue importing the gedcom.

I had the same problem and it was fixed by asking my ISP to set up a MySQL
database. Now I can upload a file that is 10 MB. Somehow the 'index' format
is not conducive to large files and even if my ISP changed the settings in
the PHP.ini file, it wouldn't work. So, he set up a MySQL database and it
works wonderfully now. You really don't need to do much differently except
in your 'configuration settings, you have to say it is MYSQL instead of
index and plug in the name of the mysql database that you told your ISP to
make...ie., I called it 'phpgedview' without the quotes.

The time that is displayed on the welcome page is the server time.  When =
I go to your site I see 24 May 2004 - 9:23:11pm when my time is 7 hours =
fast for me.

When you login it will try to use the time from your local computer, so =
make sure that the local time on your computer is set correctly before =
you login.

1) Whether you need to change permissions or not depends on how the =
users and groups are setup on your webserver.  When Apache and PHP run =
the PHP scripts, they run as a user on the system.  If the PHP user is =
the owner of config.php then the "-rw-r-r" permissions are sufficient.  =
if the PHP user is in the same group as the file then 664 or "-rw-rw-r" =
would be sufficient.  If the PHP user is not in the owning group of the =
file, then you have to set permissions to 666 or 777 or "-rw-rw-rw".  So =
the answer is that it depends on your system.  When you start PhpGedView =
it will tell you if it can write to the config.php file or not.  If not =
then you will need to set more liberal permissions.

2) phpBB is a buletin board program and I have no idea why that would be =
of any help in changing permissions.

Most FTP programs have a way inside of them to set permissions.  The =
command is usually called chmod and takes a series of numbers which are =
a binary representation of the permissions to be set.  So usually you =
would run a command like "chmod 777 config.php"
=20
Most hosts also have some sort of control panel where you can change =
permissions.
=20
You can also put the following code in a PHP file that you can try to =
run to set permissions.  Many hosts also disable the chmod function in =
PHP so the file may not work, but it is worth a try.  Just paste the =
code between the ---- into a new text file called setpermissions.php.  =
Then upload the file to your server and point your browser to it.

I am doing a research project on "Fun and Software Development" in which I kindly invite you to participate.
You will find the online survey under http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/. The questionnaire consists of 53 questions and you will need about 15 minutes to complete it.

With the FASD project (Fun and Software Development) we want to define the motivational significance of fun when software developers decide to engage in Open Source projects. What is special about our research project is that a similar survey is planned with software developers in commercial firms. This procedure allows the immediate comparison between the involved individuals and the conditions of production of these two development models. Thus we hope to obtain substantial new insights to the phenomenon of Open Source Development.
