Andy:
Have you looked at the python class/module that Doug White wrote
as part of the IPMI for FreeBSD project. He talks about it using
inb and outb types of access. Do you think this would work on a
Linux system too?
BTW, great job on the panicsel web page and the design doc.
Lots of good info there.

Steve,
Bummer.
I saw that during testing, but it looked like it was fixed on my
STL2 system. You will have to re-run the FRU/SDR diskette to fix
the FRU header, where the checksum is.
The command from that diskette will be:
Select Exit to DOS.
a:frusdr -fru xxxxxx.fru
Then you can run the diskette with normal options to customize the
settings like they were before.
Some output that would help me debug it is:
fruconfig -x >output.txt
This will show the bad/good FRU header (before/after).

Yes, I tried it out on my STL2 system here and it did work but now I'm
getting
a checksum error when it does a verification of the SMBIOS. Any idea how to
fix that?

Steve,
Yes, Corey and I and several other open-source IPMI folks have started
talking about synergies. I'd like to see him include more of my code with
the driver, but we may want to wait until the next cut.
BTW, I added the fruconfig utility based on your request. It does set the
asset tag, so you can use it for uniquely identifying systems in a cluster.

Andy:
One suggestion... Have you and Corey discussed somehow merging your
BMC panic handler driver code somehow? You said your's has some added
functionality that his is lacking. I would hate to see the kernel "gods"
who make decisions about what gets merged into the kernel have to pick
one over the other just because there are two patches.
It might also be beneficial to include some info in your README with the
panicsel stuff to talk about what kernel options to choose in the case
where Corey's IPMI driver code is being used instead of the Intel IMB
or San's kcs drivers. The choice of which BMC panic handler option to
choose is confusing so additional clarification would be helpful.

I have also tested with Corey's driver (including the imb emulation), and
found that it performed well, so far. There were a few build/config issues
in the older driver version I tried that are probably resolved by now.

Subject: [Panicsel-developers] FYI, panicsel utils work with Corey's driver
Just in case you didn't know your various panicsel utilities
(showsel and sensor) seem to work just fine with Corey's driver.
I wasn't sure you knew that since it wasn't listed in the UserGuide
or README as a working configuration.
Also on the STL2 board I have panicsel correctly indicates that
the system does not support PEF records since the board only
implements IPMI 1.0 and BMC 1.14 versions.

Steve,
I got ipmi_ctl to build, and I think I got some basic functions to work a
while ago, but I can't remember what changes I had to make to bring it up.
I did notice that there is an unrelated bug in ipmi_ctl.c (line 680,
set_asset) s/IPMI_09/IPMI_10/. I'll try again with the latest version.
Corey's driver took some of the code from bmcpanic, but didn't implement
several of the requirements we had from telco sources. I recommend using
his driver with that module turned off in the config, and turning bmcpanic
on. Corey's panic handling only does the basic SEL record, but does not:
- include any info (like panic string) defining what the panic is in the
SEL record
- include any attempt to set alarms panel LEDs, if present
- have an option to do a chassis reset or power down after panic (since
soft reset may sometimes fail)
bmcpanic does support these features, plus the utilities set up the
configuration that it needs for the SNMP LAN alerts (via pefconfig).

Subject: Re: [Panicsel-developers] Intel STL2 board capable of IPMI
functions?
OK, the STL2 board seems to be capable of some IPMI functions.
I was able to list out the SEL so far using showsel from the
panicsel package and the linux-ipmi-2.4.19 driver from Corey
Minyard. I tried to use San's ipmi_ctl software (I pointed
you towards this the other day, Andy) and it keeps failing
in the report_device_id function with an error of:
report_device_id(): failed (Invalid argument)
Andy: Did you get ipmi_ctl to work or not?
If you did was there any code modification you had to do
to the various source files for ipmi_ctl?
The dmidecode tool that comes with the ipmi_ctl package seems
to work fine on the STL2 motherboard I have so at least
part of San's old tools work.
I see Corey's driver supports generating an event on a panic
like the bmcpanic.patch does. Any idea if only one or the other
is needed to use panicsel or will both patches co-exist OK?
Or will either patch work with panicsel?
I notice that one conflict with the patches is that both add
panic_notifier_list to the list of exported symbols in ksyms.c
My guess is that only one or the other of the patches is needed
but can anyone confirm that?

I have tested with STL2 motherboards using panicsel utilities. This
motherboard supports IPMI 1.0, which supplies some/many of the functions.
Showsel - works
Hwreset - works
Pefconfig - full functionality needs IPMI 1.5, so exits, but there actually
could be a subset of these functions that would work on IPMI 1.0.
Tmconfig - needs IPMI 1.5
Sensor - works on IPMI 1.0 with STL2, although there are 2 as-yet unparsed
sensor types returned.

Andy or Tariq:
Can either of you tell me if the Intel STL2 motherboard I have here in
a system has any circuitry to let me do any IPMI testing?
I seem to recall San (VA's ipmi_kcs developer) having a lot of problems
trying to get any sort of IPMI or other management access to work
correctly with the STL2 based systems.

Hello all:
I was just speaking with Andy a few min. ago so I thought I would
introduce myself here. I was the technical and production guru
for the cluster department at VA Linux systems. Currently I am
one of the core development team members of the OSCAR project
and I am writing articles for the cluster foundry on Sourceforge.
Ever since VA (San Mehat and others) did early versions of the
VACM tool I have had a strong interest in IPMI functionality in
Linux. I helped VA's cluster customers understand the power that
IPMI gave to their cluster admins. I'm still very interested in
promoting additional development in this area to this day.
That said I will be most likely asking a lot of questions here
about how the current 1.5 spec works.
That said is there an archive of the posts thus far available or
is this mailing list so new that there has been anything of
interest to archive?
