Hi all, 1st cut of first localization newsletter is available at http://www.indlinux.org/wiki/index.php/NewsLetterVol1 At present it has sections Editor speak, Headlines, News Bits, In Focus, Team Watch, Help! 'In Focus' could have articles or stuff on a particular theme, eg. fonts, input method etc. 'Team Watch' would be info on a active localization team/ project, could contain interview with volunteers/developers active in localization area. Structure is still crude, idea on how to better it or section names are welcome. You can add content directly into the above link or send a mail to <karunakar at freedomink.org> for time being. ideas n suggestion on structure/format/content etc can be added to http://www.indlinux.org/wiki/index.php?LocalizationNewsletter Once the newsletter is finalized, it would be well formatted and released (volunteers welcome for that). I think first newsletter could be out next week. Hi all, for those not always online, below is first cut of newsletter. ------------------------------------ Localization Newsletter Vol 1 (March 15-31, 2004) *--- Editor speak ---* So finally a rough cut of the first issue of the Localization newsletter is ready. First on why bring it out. Our basic goal is to collect all info on whats happening in localization scene in India and around, Who is doing what? , Latest/recent developments, events etc happening . Mainly to publicise widely localization activities, so people get the whole picture rather than bits-n-pieces. This newletter would serve as a mouthpiece for all localization teams & their volunteers. Since this is first version, its not much structured, & content written in very informal way. Everyone is welcome to give their comments on it. You can add them to LocalizationNewsletter wiki.(TBD - add more blah blah ). *--- Headlines ---* * Bangla becomes first supported Indian language in Gnome 2.6. As on 21st March it stood at 82%, thats about 14828 strings translated in Gnome 2.6 essentials. * Stats for other languages in Gnome 2.6 - Punjabi (72%), Hindi (63%), Tamil (36%), Malayalam (33%), Marathi (17%), Kannada (5%). See full statistics at http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gtp/status/gnome-2.6/ . * KDE Hindi is now 80%. Thanks to tiring efforts of Ravishankar Shrivastava and fellowship support from SARAI, KDE Hindi is now 80% complete, thats a record of 50,000 strings translated in span of 3 months. Tamil is ahead at 91%, with Bangla at distant 34%. *--- News Bits ---* ** Oye Balle Balle Amanpreet Singh Alam and Gursharn Singh recently started off Punjabi localisation work, they have created a Gurmukhi Unicode font and doing Gnome 2.6 translations at rocket speed completing about 16,000 strings in a month. See http://www.geocities.com/punlinux for more. They along with Jaswinder Singh, Narinderpal Singh and Sushil Kumar are working Punjabi live CD based on GNOPPIX. ** World's first distro with Indian language support PCQLinux2004 bundles IndLinux Pali release, with its March 2004 issue. This makes it the worlds first linux distro to have Indian language support enabled by default. PCQLinux2004 is based on Fedora, with a lot of customization to users for home and office needs. There are some glitches though, read http://www.indlinux.org/wiki/index.php/PcqLinux2004 for more. ** Indic Input tool for Windows 9X. Abhijit Dutta informs about a tool for entering Unicode-based Indic text from older Windows machines. This could be killer app for people using Windows 95/98 and want to type Unicod in Unicode enabled apps like Internet Explorer (5.5 or above) , Mozilla / Netscape 7.0+, OpenOffice, etc. Visit http://www.alphaworks.ibm.com/forum/indicime.nsf and also post you feedback on it there. ** Taming The Dragon Jungshik Shin of Mozilla team announced of Mozilla binary built with Pango for enabling complex script rendering. This build can be used to browses Indian language websites using Unicode by having the right fonts. It's available at ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mozilla/releases/mozilla1.6/contrib/mozilla-i686-pc-linux-gnu-gtk2-pango.tar.gz He says "It's compiled with gtk2, xft and my patch for mozilla bug 215219 (http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=215219). Please, spread the words so that as many people as possible can benefit from the build. If you use a type 1 postscript font for Western langgroup, you may have a trouble with Latin letters. There are two ways to solve the problem. One is NOT to use type 1 postscript fonts and the other is to upgrade Xft, fontconfig and Pango the latest. Please, refer to the following README file for more details. ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mozilla/releases/mozilla1.6/contrib/README-pango" ** IndLinux-Hindi 0.73 (Pali) released This is a updated release for Gnome 2.2 including Gnome 2.4 . It also has the necessary fonts, keyboard settings and scripts to ready your distro for Indic. Supported distros - Redhat 8/9 , Fedora Core 1, Mandrake 9.1/9.2 . Morphix Gnome / Debian unstable with Gnome 2.x . Download it from http://www.indlinux.org/downloads/ *--- In Focus ---* (TBD - feature articles come here) *--- On Watch ---* (Dates/deadlines/future events to watch for) *--- Team watch ---* ( log of activities of ny localization team, interviews, etc) *--- Help ---* Your language needs you - Do you have some time to spare & good at your language, then you could help out with translations for your language. Hi list, This is by far the best quality OpenType font for devanagari known till now. Built by Ulrich Steihl. For a screen shot and download link please see http://devanaagarii.net (refresh). Perhaps it would also be freely distributable and can therefore be included in linux distros. One has to check with Herr Steihl about this. Hi all, I was thinking for sometime to bring out a weekly or twice a month newsletter on localization. basic goal is to collect all info on whats happening where, who is doing what , latest/recent developments happening etc. It could be a small one 2-3 pages when printed, much on the lines of Fred's bytesforall newsletter. newsletter posting would also be done on a mailing list (to which people can subsribe to recieve the newsletter - or some other form much like many sites which take email ids & send newsletters. maybe when someone is registering for the newsletter we can have them fill our a form taking their details relevant to localization - eg language, profession, ny interest in languages etc. Another goal (or primary goal) of the newsletter would be to publicise widely localisation activities happening , so people get the whole picture rather than bits-n-pieces. Some views on how it should be are posted at http://www.indlinux.org/wiki/index.php?LocalizationNewsletter Suggestions can be added in here. First edition of it is in writing at http://www.indlinux.org/wiki/index.php?NewsLetterVol1 You can add news bits and other stuff to it. Once finalized it will be converted to html and other formats for easy viewing & distribution. Hi to start with I think you should try yudit (www.yudit.org). it is the simplest way of typing in Marathi. You can also check out a HowTo on yudit in HowTo section of www.indictrans.org Bye Swapnil Hajare www.indictrans.org - "Dr. U.B. Thanks; i got the whole thing installed and got started. Looks neat! However, what is the typing skill needed to do this? I can barely type one word in a few minutes. I guess after practice this might improve but still it would be better if a "ta" can relate to "t" for instance, or else one is perenially seaching for the letters. Also, I am having some trouble with what are called in Marathi as "jodashars", that is a letter that is made up of two split letters. Is there a faq or a developer who can answer for instance how to write a "t-ya"? It should be a a split ta and a split ya. Great work though. We Indians should be writing full-time in our languages. Pity we dont, and still we call ourselves an IT power. Shows the level of our self-esteem. regards, Samir Kelekar alo...@so... wrote: Samir Kelekar writes: > > PS: Specifically, the following lettter addressed to the Goan CM > needs to be given to the Marathi press in > Goa. Due to their hard work, we have a release to be truly proud of. Thanks very much to each and every Ankur Bangla project volunteer out there - you all rock!! But hey hey hey!! This is just the beginning. The Live CD is designed to be just a *preview* of what Ankur has in store for Bangla speaking people from all over the world. We promise much much more very very soon. Already our hackers have started work on KDE - and you'll be seeing Bangla localized version of Evolution within a few weeks. Now about this release... This release is basically a highly tweaked version the previous version (beta3). Updated packages include xine-lib (now at 1.0-rc1) and Gaim 0.72 (with support for the newer avatars of MSN and Yahoo! protocols). The documentation has been updated, and with this release, as soon as you pop your CD into your Windows box, it autoruns with a nice HTML page coming up with info about the CD and directions on how to boot from it. Moreover, I have included TightVNC in this release of the Live CD. That means that you can do some really cool stuff with it. (Bangla Desktop in a browser - anyone?) Many of you may know that Ankur is not only restricted to GNU/Linux. Quite a few of its projects have ports for Windows. This CD contains some of the Windows software from Ankur. For example, Lekho is a "plain text" editor designed to take in phonetic input from a standard US keyboard and convert (transliterate) it online into bangla text. Also included is the Probhat for Windows package, which lets you use the Probhat Bangla layout (from Ankur) in Windows XP/2000. Moreover, we have also included a wonderful piece of software which is not from Ankur, but is heavily used by the Ankur developers. It is called Yudit, and if you are not using it - install it today!! Yudit works in both Windows and GNU/Linux. The ISO image and its MD5sum can be downloaded (approx 408 MB download) from http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=43331&package_id=96784&release_id=205011 Bugs should be reported at http://www.bengalinux.org/bugs Mailing list for people interested in the LiveCD is at http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/bengalinux-distro Screenshots are available at http://www.bengalinux.org/screenshots/gnome/ A round of special thanks goes out to Indranil Dasgupta and Malay Mitra for helping in the production of the CD. Also, the people who have been most helpful in the Live CD project are the beta testers - and a HUGGGEEE thanks goes out to them. ..and thanks also to Sankarshan Mukhopadhyay - for carrying out the hard work of distributing the Live CD to the beta testers who don't have a high speed internet connection. -cheers and Ho Ho Ho!!- Sayamindu Dasgupta (Release Monkey of the Ankur Bangla Project) ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Known issues ------------ * GNOME Terminal does not work (use xterm instead) * The CD by default boots into the Indian Bangla (bn_IN) locale. Bangladeshi users may want to use the bn_BD locale by typing Ankur_BD at the boot prompt. * The volume is set to mute by default in the CD. Please change that by clicking on the speaker icon in the panel towards the lower right corner of the screen. * Do not try to drag and drop files/folders with Bangla names into floppies and Windows partitions. The results are not predictable, and we are trying to solve the problem. It may be an issue with the GNOME VFS package. * The dial up networking wizard has been removed due to stability issues. It will be added in the next major release of the Live CD. However, experienced GNU/Linux users may try out the text based wvdial dialer software - which is included in the CD. * In Epiphany (browser), Bangla characters followed by hashanta are not rendered as expected. This is an issue with Pango. Work on a fix for this has already been started, and this issue is expected to be resolved soon. * Some users have reported that the Live CD fails to load further after the X Window system has started, and the initial bootup sound has been played. This seems to be an issue with ESD, and manually switching to a terminal and killing esd (killall esd) seems to work. One may also want to boot with the alsa=off bootoption (note that this disables all sound). ChangeLog --------- * Updated Documentation * Added TightVNC * Upgraded to Xine-lib-1.0-rc1, GAIM 0.7.2 and Epiphany 1.0.6 * Added autorun feature for Windows users * Added Lekho, Probhat.zip, Muktinarrow.ttf, Yudit for Windows users * Misc. translation updates * Added support for correct autodetection of Intel 815 chipset based motherboards * Timezone is now Asia/Calcutta * Mounting subsystem now works - though support for supermount has been disabled * Cleaning up and tweaking of the init.sh script (which loads up the Mainmodule) * Added the Morphix Derivative-Distribution License into the Live CD. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ -- Sayamindu Dasgupta [ http://clai.net/sayamindu ] ===================================================== .: GNOME India :. http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gnome-in-list Let's extend the footprint !! ----------------------------------------------------- |

---------- Forwarded message ---------- Below is the text of a question raised in the Indian parliament: Government of India * Ministry of Communications and Information Technology * Departemnt of Information Technology * Rajya Sabha unstarred question No 976 * To be answered on 11-12-2003 Promotion of Free/Libre and Open Source Software Will the Minister of Comunications & Information Technology be pleased to state:- (a) what steps have been taken since the announcement of the Linux India Initiative by Government on the issue of promoting free/libre and open source software within the country; (b) the level of usage of FLOSS products in Government and semi-Government organisations; and (c) whether the research benefits of publicly-funded computing institutions would be made sharable to all, by placing the same under the General Public Licence (GPL) or similar licences that do not restrict sharing of knowledge due to copyright restrictions? ANSWER Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology (SU Thirunavukkarasar) (a): Two more consultative meetings have been held since then for in-depth discussion on projects and policy positions to be taken -- one with the Government and associated agencies and another with NGOs/Civil Society. Various related initiatives, as planned, under Linux India Initiative exercise are also being pursued. (b): They are growing. (c): Research benefits of publicly funded computing institutions are being shared wherever appropriate. For instance, Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) had added components relating to a number of Indian languages for Linux available under General Public Licence (GPL) in September, 2003. Similarly, open office solutions have been provided for Indian languages under GPL developed by C-DAC, CollabCAD software developed by National Informatics Centre (NIC) package has also been put in a limited sharing mode within certain agencies of Government. C-DAC has also put its Indian fonts in public domain. Wherever appropriate, software developed under public funded efforts are being shared under GPL or similar licenses that do not restrict the sharing of knowledge due to copyright restrictions **** Forwarded through: -- Frederick Noronha : http://www.fredericknoronha.net Ph 0091.832.2409490 Freelance Journalist : http://www.bytesforall.org Ph 0091.832.2409783 http://fredericknoronha.blogware.com Cell 0 9822 122436 |
