Syriac, Tibetan, Khmer and others are also expected to work, but the KDE project needs people who understand these languages to help the translation and localisation teams by providing feedback. The NetVista A30 Linux desktop, targeted at the small and medium business and home offices, will be launched in non-metros such as Lucknow, Patna, Raipur, Nagpur, Bhopal and Indore. It is for the first time that a commercial desktop vendor has introduced an entry-level desktop that is certified on Linux. The NetVista A30 Linux desktop comes with a 3-year hardware warranty and would be sold through IBM's network of business partners. Two recent meetings were held on the subject of Indic Computing. 1) On 28th May, 2003, a group of Indiccers met informally at Delhi at the India Habitat Centre to discuss Indic Computing issues. As a result of this meeting, we expect closer coordination on developing OTF fonts. Osama and Sanjay of 4Cplus said that they would release OTF fonts under GPL within the next two months and Niyam has agreed to help them. Vijay will send a synopsis of this meeting across. 2) On 24th May, Prof. Jitendra Shah and I organized a meeting at Prof. Shah's residence in Mumbai. The meet titled "The Future of Marathi in the Information Age" attracted a very good response. Despite the short notice, 12 people from different disciplines (Marathi cultural organizations, linguists, technologists, and free/open source software activists) attended the meeting organized by Prof. Jitendra Shah and Venkatesh Hariharan. Prof. Jitendra Shah's excellent contacts in the world of Marathi literature and information technology were a priceless help in bringing this eclectic, diverse bunch together. In addition the Shah family (Jitendra Shah, his wife and two sons) were excellent hosts for the meeting which was held at their residence. A big thanks is in order from the group to Mr. Shah and family for the warm atmosphere in which the meeting was held. A lesser reported part of President Kalam's recent speech delivered at IIIT, Pune focussed on Indic computing. Venky http://presidentofindia.nic.in/S/html/speeches/others/may28_2003_2.htm One of the ingredient for the country to become a developed country is that its languages must also be developed in a digital era. That means we must have search engines, word processing tools, optical character recognizers. Speech recognizers, automatic summarizers, and machine translators. I am aware about the complexities of the problem. I suggest that I2IT Pune need to contribute in the development of Language Technologies particularly Indian Languages. Knowledge Management, Information extraction and retrieval pertaining to English and Indian languages have to be developed in an integrated way. Civilisation that does not have the knowledge of technology or the technological nations without experience of civilization, cannot innovate newer economy. |

Sarovar.org is a Compaq machine running Debian Woody and a customized gforge. It is hosted in Trivandrum and connected to BSNL, VSNL and SingTel. All the traffic from it should come without leaving India. We are also planning to mirror some important sites right here, including Linux kernel and mail lists. Hi, OO.o 1.1 Beta (644) incorporates some major changes in implementation, and includes a generalized framework for CTL-based languages like Hindi and Thai. The BharateeyaOO.o version that we have developed, (taken from the 641 source tag), has support only for Indian languages in general. OO.o 1.1 Beta (note: implementations are still in beta stage, and are being perfected for Beta2 and stable releases) provides good initial support for Indian CTL and locales; however, a stable release with complete support is our lookout. We are also testing some extended features like dictionary, Indian language templates and helpcontent, and you will be able to see these incorporated soon. We are planning to release BharateeyaOO.o ,*OO.o 1.1 Beta* and newer stable build localizations soon, specifically on Linux. We have started the first Indian Native Language Project on
OpenOffice.org - http://hi.openoffice.org/ which brings OO.o to Indian
users in Hindi. This will be the official site for our work, through which
we hope to represent and coordinate the Indian linguistic communities on
OpenOffice.org. The site has mailing lists, members and issue tracking,
which can be used to tackle Indian language support problems in OO.o, as well
as other language issues. The site is just in its initial phase... there will
be lots more to come soon.
We hope that this will mark a new beginning in the field of
indic-computing as well as Indian language representation in OO.o, and we
look forward to some comments and/or feedback.

It took me a bit longer than I originally estimated, but now all indic languages which I could test (mainly devanagari, bengali and tamil) seem to work just fine. Other indic languages should work, but might contain some bugs. Additionally Syriac, Tibetan and Khmer should work. As I do not speak these languages I would appreciate any feedback I can get. The font system uses open type and Xft, so these languages will only work if you install open type fonts for them. This also means that the language support we now have is mostly equivalent to what Windows can offer. Qt still misses a few things, as support for correct thai line breaking, but we're getting there. As an example, the screenshots below are taken with konqueror using Qt-3.2 http://trolls.troll.no/lars/konqueror_hindi.png http://trolls.troll.no/lars/konqueror_bengali.png All that is needed is to replace Qt-3.1 by Qt-3.2. I didn't change a single line of code in kde to achieve this. When using it, you will however notice, that some things (as e.g. selection handling) are still broken and will need fixing. At some point in time, we will have to start thinking of how we can interface with the Government. I wonder what would be an appropriate time to initiate such a process? The experiences of FSF in Kerala and KGP in Karnataka may be educative in this regard. Also, as recommended in point 15, working with groups like Agro-explorer at IIT Bombay that are funded by the Government would be very helpful. In my interactions with academics at IIT Bombay and IIT Kanpur over the last one year, I have found them to be quite open minded. Broadly the point is: How can we involve students, academics and the government in our efforts?
