Hi, I am using GNUplot Version 4.6 patchlevel 4. I would like to create a "false" 3D graph: a 2D graph with a color as Z entry. I find that it could be done easily with "image" keyword (http://gnuplot.sourceforge.net/demo/heatmaps.html) But my data are not a perfect and simple matrix. In this case, GNUplot interpolate the data and graph sometime a parallelogram instead of a square... I would like that nothing is displayed when the point "does not exist" in the matrix. See 2 following examples, where the graph obtained are false ;-( How can I correct this ? Should I use something else than "plot w image" ? A file in that format is not in matrix form as understood by gnuplot.
Your data file format is not really usable by gnuplot as-is. If at all
possible, you should transpose it, i.e. make columns out of rows and
vice versa. Then a simple
plot 'filename' using 1:3
will display what you want.

On linux this normally results in the MULTITHREADED option being chosen.
Could you please try forcing the MONOTHREADED option instead and reporting

Plotting on the x11 terminal works, but it's very low resolution if compared to wxt. Any ideas why this might be happening? There are no visible error messages. I tried compiling from source manually, but the results are the same as with the homebrew install. Thanks, Cássio |

I am generating heat-maps and I'm confused as to how the color palette for the cbrange works. How does one set lower and upper colors including the nuances? I know there are preset values that I can set , but can I set these myself? If so, can I pick a color for lower-mid-upper range or a combination thereof? Also, how do I manipulate the tic size? that is to say can I fill the size of each area that a color shade occupies? the default is a skim line that stretches depending on the size of my x-range. In 4.7 you can provide named data blocks.
gnuplot> help inline
There are two mechanisms for embedding data into a stream of gnuplot commands.
If the special filename '-' appears in a plot command, then the lines
immediately following the plot command are interpreted as inline data.
See `special-filenames`. Data provided in this way can only be used once, by
the plot command it follows.
The second mechanism defines a named data block as a here-document. The named
data is persistent and may be referred to by more than one plot command.
Example:
$Mydata << EOD
11 22 33 first line of data
44 55 66 second line of data
# comments work just as in a data file
77 88 99
EOD
stats $Mydata using 1:3

Data block names must begin with a $ character, which distinguishes them from

Thank you for your explanations. That's a pity. I didn't want to attach a lot of small separate data files to the plotting file. Although it might be possible to somehow pack the different smaller datasets in one file but it will not be convenient for plotting. Another approach: Like the variable in gnuplot, can single column data be defined in an inline array? e.g. 'MyValue=3.141' and 'MyArray'=(10,20,30,40,50) Is this what you meant with "named data store"? The '' syntax re-uses the file name, not the file data. With a normal file the '' actually re-reads the file again, which is why when gnuplot goes to re-read from inline you must re-supply the data. To reuse the file's data, gnuplot would obviously have to cache it, and that is impractical or impossible for large data sets. I think I recall some discussion along the lines of implementing a named data store feature that would explicitly instruct gnuplot to cache a particular (potentially inline) data set, but I'm not sure whether it was completed. To only type in the data once, put it into a regular file with the appropriate format, and reference it by its file name. Hi there, if I want to include (for some special reason) data into the plotting file itself I can use the special filename '-' and write the data in the plot file, e.g.: plot '-' u 0:1 w l lc 1 10 20 30 40 e If I want to use the data twice and modify it in the second plot I thought that I can use the special filename '', which according to the manual should "...re-use the previous input file in the same plot command." The previous input file is '-'. As I understand this data should be re-used. Factor=1.234 Offset=9.876 plot '-' u 0:1 w l lc 1, '' u 0:($1*Factor+Offset) w l lc 2 10 20 30 40 e But it doesn't. The results are confusing and i have no idea what the problem may be
(me or gnuplot).
the x-axes i see is 0 0 1 1 2 2 3
but i expected to see the time difference in seconds.
note: yes i can preprocess that file and use seconds in the first place
but i would like to understand what is going on here

Ah. Sorry, I completely misunderstood the nature of the double-quotes in question -- I assumed they were in some shell command. In the past (and earlier versions of gnuplot) I've had trouble on occasion using single quotes and just emitted double-quotes for everything.

It is documented under "help enhanced" and "help quotes".

You have the options:
- Turn off enhanced mode
or
- Use single quotes and a single backslash to escape each special character
or
- Use double quotes and two backslashes to escape each special character
or

Just as the terminals are different in real life, so too are gnuplot's
virtual versions. (This is a feature, not a bug.) It is often the case
that they are somewhat similar, but experience with the different
terminals is the only workaround I know of.
' help set term' will show a list of terminals for your installation.
' help set term png' will show you the capabilities of the png term
Issuing 'test' for a number of different terms will allow your to
compare their renderings.
