Hello list, I am trying to use gnuplot to produce pdf figures on my mac. Here is the configurations: gnuplot: version 5.0 os: OS X EI Capitan Version 10.11.6I installed the gnuplot with brew install gnuplot --with-x11 But when I tried to produce figures with set term pdf .... .... I will receive the errors about the undefined pdf format. Actually when I try to print out all the supported format of gnuplot: $ gnuplot > set term .... I cannot find the pdf format in the list of supported formats. Here is my question, how can I use set term pdf with gnuplot on the mac? It is always workable on my Linux machines... very strange.. I even tried this stupid case: set mouse f(x)=x #set print 'temp_ch' a=3333 set term x11 bind all "Button1" "print a" bind "Button1" plot f(x) pause mouse I also tried using: pause mouse "Button3" ... Nothing to do: after the first click the x11 window closes and the value "3333" is not printed on screen… I suspect that something related to the mouse handling is missing in my (default) gnuplot installation.. Can somebody give me detailed instructions about the steps to do to reinstall gnuplot 5.04? And also a correct version of this simple script? Why my output is different from Ethan's one? Yeah, if you put those commands in a script and execute from the command line as "gnuplot script.gp" then it will exit at the end of the "pause mouse", so nothing written to file. Change "pause mouse" to "pause mouse button3" or "pause mouse close" and you should be fine. I am not sure if I have the question right. What I seek to do is plot an ellipse quadrant by quadrant. Say the range from 0 to 90? In explicit mode such as set object ellipse at 1,1 size 3,1.5 then polar and parametric. Simple code examples will be GREATLY appreciated. The ultimate goal is wide curves (not pi driven), ones with low curvature. Maybe there is a better way? I looked for "plot arc" that search was not immediately productive, \ ....but it's late...y'all know the rest, I'm sure. although there are a few examples at http://gnuplot.sourceforge.net/demo/ I still find it pretty confusing about plot, splot, matrix, with image, surface plot, contour plot or 2D/3D heatmap... Anyway, to my understanding if you have data which is not in a regular matrix, i.e. "non-gridded data" you first need to convert the data into a regular grid (see "set dgrid3d"). See example: non-gridded data Maybe the following code helps you? The file "RandomMesh.dat" consist of 3 columns with x y z data, so similar to your data. ####### Plot arbitrary mesh data reset set view map set dgrid3d 30,30,10 set palette rgbformulae 33,13,10 set multiplot layout 1,2 set surface unset contour splot "RandomMesh.dat" w pm3d unset surface set contour set cntrparam levels 10 splot "RandomMesh.dat" w pm3d unset multiplot ####### EOF |

Make sure you're using the newest gnuplot version. If you read "help size" carefully you will see that size of the plot is in relative units to the size of the canvas. This apparently was different in older gnuplot versions and/or terminals. reset set terminal pdfcairo size 17in,11in set output "test.pdf" # calculate the ratio of 8in to 17in and 10in to 11in # need to add . to force floating point division set size 8/17.,10/11. plot x**2 unset output |

It all sounds so simple and easy, so I must be missing something somewhere.
What I want to do is place a full scale 8 x 10 inch plot on tabloid sized

if the arrow length is reduced to small values towards zero the arrow
head is also changing. Actually, I would have expected that the arrow
heads stay always the same. But they are not as you can easily check
with the following code.

I guess that's not want you wanted for your arrow heads?!
So, I thought arrow heads can also be created by polygons.
set object 1 polygon from x1,y1 to x2,y2 to ... to x1,y1
The following code is a "workaround" just for fun...
It looks (and maybe is) complicated but basically it's just a few
coordinate transformations.
The necessary input parameters for the arrow heads are the following:
ax = 0 # x-value in x1-axis coordinates arrow head points to
ay = 0 # y-value in y1-axis coordinates arrow head points to
AA = 45 # ArrowAngle
HL = 0.05 # HeadLength in fractions of screen width
HA = 15 # HeadAngle
BA = 45 # BackAngle
There might be certainly a more elegant way to do it.
Hope there is no bug in it, but it worked for me on a wxt terminal.
The size and shape of the arrow heads do do not depend on the graph
scale but just on the screen.

Note that arrows can now (version 5) be specified in the form:
set arrow {<tag>} from <position> length <coord> angle <ang>
This is particularly useful for the case at hand.

You can make a really short arrow, this one points to the upper right:
set arrow from 0.98,0.98 to 1,1
See 'help arrow" to format it to suit.

Many thanks theozh! The way of assigning values from data to variables through empty plot commands was completely new to me. It works great for wxt (https://github.com/romangrothausmann/KursgleicheNG/blob/8c9eb5c69e77da7e9102beefa8c139d409717719/windrose.gp), but even though SVG supports rotated labels, the "empty plots" cause SVG end-tags for groups that have no start-tag which results in invalid SVGs. Is that expected?
