The only backwards-compatible method to extract a version number from gnuplot is to run echo show version | gnuplot and parse the resulting multi-line text. |

Or it works only in vers >=4 ! In fact, I have a Debian-stable system, with gnuplot 3.7. gnuplot --version don't work here. Hi, When you load in a file you generally have a set of number - two columns, in particular, for plot. But you can multiply them by any factor you want... plot 'data.dat' u 1:($2*2) ...for example, will plot the data in columns 1 and 2, but will double the value of the data in the second column. You can generate metric abbreviations in axis ticks (--> 'help set format specifiers'), but gnuplot can't read such data from a file. OTOH, I don't see how 100m is any shorter than 0.1 ;-) |

St=E9phane, I'm not sure that I fully understand what you want to do, but assuming that= =20 you are trying to plot a series of vectors (which represent stream lines?),= =20 then try someting like the following: plot 'stream.dat' u 1:2:3:3 w vector where the file 'stream.dat' contains=20 four columns of data corresponding to the x, y, delta_x and delta_y=20 coordinates of the arrows. I've used this to produce hydrological routing=20 networks (small example attached). It's also possible to drape flow lines,= =20 such these, over a 3D surface. None. Arrows are meant to be part of a plot, in gnuplot. That's why the command is "set" arrow, not "draw arrow" or whatever --- arrows are part of the description of the plot you set up with various gnuplot "set" commands, which will then get executed for all subsequent "plot", "splot" and "replot" commands. If you don't need an arrowhead, it may be that plot '-' w l 0 0 0.5 0.5 E is useful to you. See "help datafile special" to see how this works. |

Of course it's persistant --- your code *explicitly* asked for that,
see:

I did something similar from PERL. The hitch is that the pipe is buffered.
You can flush the pipe, but that only flushes the pipe's input, not it's
output. So gnuplot waits forever. My workaround was to call gnuplot in a
mode where it exits when it's done, using a file for the data and most of
the commands, rather than piping everything in. This requires a temp file,
of course, but you can re-use the same one if you don't plan on multiple
users of your app.
