Thanks Marek for your reply, this is a good idea.

Now I'm trying to omit the first column. I've tried to add '?' to the points
of the first but Gnuplot seems to reject it ('bad number in matrix').

Do you any idea?

yes; one method is to write and read from stdin/stdout.
the code below (untested) uses this technique.

however, you should read up on piping to stdin reading from
stdout with perl: there are a number of issues to consider.
In addition, one must give consideration to security when 
deploying gnuplot on a webserver.

Kalispera!

I'm trying to 'splot' a ascii matrix created by a sql query omitting the
first row

I would like to omit the first row (which contains the necessary sql 'group
by' parameter).

I've read the documentation scrupulously, I have found how plot a single row
of a matrix but not how to omit one.

Does someone have a solution? or is it just not possible?

I've just done it in perl/cgi so I don't see why php couldnt do it!

I did it by saving off the data to a temporary .dat file, then running
gnuplot from my script using this file, saving the output to a png file
(jpeg might be possible...probably something like set term jpeg) and then
getting my script to write an html output displaying this .png file. Im no
expert in perl or gnuplot but it wasnt too tricky.

A question for anyone who might know........is it possible for me to by pass
saving off the temporary file and instead keeping a 2d array in memory and
sending it straight to gnuplot

You could add "<img src="/cgi-bin/plot.php?sin(x)"/> to your website and
  create a plot.php that calls gnuplot and make gnuplot output to
standard out. Something like:

print "Content-Type: image/png\n\n";

print `echo 'set term png; set output; plot sin(x)'|gnuplot`;

But there is a HUGE PROBLEM, assume someone enters something like "< rm
-rf" (with the  quotes) (or ;`rm -rf` or something evil you did not
think of yet). Assume futhermore you replace sin(x) with the input of
the user (in our case "< rm -rf"), your plot command (which looks like
plot "< rm -rf") would then delete files, so there is a HUGE SECURITY ISSUE.

The only way of which I know to avoid this is by letting the user select
between different functions to plot and have somthing like

if input==A then plot sin(x)
if input==B then plot cos(x)

which is useless since you could create the plots in advance.

it's not a problem of gnuplot, it's a problem you have with your x-server.
if you would start 'xclock' or 'xterm' inside a terminal window, you would
see
the same message.

it may be caused by a change of your network address after starting the
x-server, e.g. you start without connection to the internet and afterwards
connect via dsl. then your network address changes but the x-server
retains the old address and refuses connection because the client
(gnuplot_x11,
xclock, xterm, ...) now runs on a 'different' computer.

or

the user who started the x-server is not the user who started gnuplot.

Hi, my name is Gonzalo Vilella. I'm writing you because I've got some
problems with my gnuplot for Kubuntu. I had the 4.0 version and I
tried to ugrade it to the 4.2 version. It told me to install the x-11
package. Once I did that, it has started failing. Now, every once I
try to execute the gnuplot I have a problem: it says:

Hello,

The image style is a very useful new feature of gnuplot. Wouldn't it be even
more useful if there were a way to take into account missing data in the file?

Example: you want to render a function of longitude and latitude with undefined
values on some areas.

These undefined values could be represented with a special number or string in
the file (for example the one defined with "set datafile missing"). Just now,
data with missing values can't be plotted using "with image".

I would like to do a quick and dirty change in the gnuplot source in order to
render these missing values with a given RGB color. Is it easy to do?

Hi,

I'd like to get rid of the cross isolines when using splot to plot from a
datafile. Is it possible to achieve this when using matrix format in my
datafile? If I use blocks and specify each point by three coordinates I can
get rid of the lines by having unequal sizes of the blocks but what can I do
for matrix format?

[Gnuplot-info] Howto Draw PDF/CDF curve with Gnuplot

Hi All,

I have a dataset for which I would like to generate the histogram and
probability & cumulative distribution function (pdf & cdf) using
gnuplot.

In MS-Excel under Tools->Data Analysis->Histogram (with cumulative
option checked) produces the pdf & cdf. I would like to replicate the
same thing using gnuplot and if necessary some perl scripting.

The dataset is sorted.
The following is an example data set, it also can appear as integer
set.

Is there a way to do that with gnuplot?

Hi,

Sorry for the delay. The problem was: With epslatex terminal (and possibly other terms too) using 'cd' between 'set output ...' and 'plot ..' is broken. (see <http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_name=20071119141314.119800%40gmx.net&forum_name=gnuplot-info>)

The reason is that 'set output ...' opens the outputfile whereas the plot command opens the secondary outputfile via 'EPSLATEX_reopen_output()'.

In my opinion the best would be to open the 1st output file during the 'plot' command, but I don't know about gnuplot internals and can imagine that this is impossible.

What about saving the current working directory in the call of term_set_output and (temporarily) reset the path  in EPSLATEX_reopen_output while the 2nd file is created.

Thank you.  Now it is working like a charm.

My experience with gnuplot is quite short.  I think your library could help
a lot.  My advices :
1.- Add a complete gnujavaplot.jar for those (like me) that sometimes are
too lazy to compile from the sources.
2.- Configure a project website (maybe at gnujavaplot.sourceforge.net) with
the javadocs and, even more

3.- Don't use "JavaPlot" as the project name, as I think it is some kind of
common word that could make your project hard to distinguish from other
general java plotting libraries (gnujavaplot sounds fine for me :)

There is a simple README file, which tells you how to start.
There is also full javadoc, which should describe what everything does.
This library follows gnuplot naming conventions, so that the details =20

Yes.  gnuplot reads data in the standard format printed and accepted by 
the C programming language, i.e. 1.234e-56 style.
