you mix xticlabels for histograms and x-axis timedata.
this can not work. and, your column numbering is not
correct.
use following script and see if it does what you expect:

reset
set title "Database Connections"

set style histogram rowstacked
set style fill solid noborder
set boxwidth 0.75
plot 'latest-connections.dat' using 3:xtic(2) title "A", \
'' using 4 title "B", \
'' using 5 title "C", \

[Gnuplot-info] need help with stacked histogram

All the samples tend to assume that you are working from a data file 
where the header row contains the labels for each piece of the stack.  
That is not the case in my situation.  I want to supply the labels from 
each stack in the script.

My script is as follows:

#set terminal png transparent nocrop enhanced size 900 600
#set output 'latest-connections.png'
set title "Database Connections"
set key below
set xdata time
set timefmt "%Y-%m-%d %H:%M"
set format x "%H:%M"
set style data histogram
set style histogram rowstacked
set style fill solid noborder

plot 'latest-connections.dat' using 1 "%Y-%m-%d %H:%M", \
'' using 2 title "A", \
'' using 3 title "B", \
'' using 4 title "C", \
'' using 5 title "D", \
'' using ($6-($2+$3+$4+$5)) title "other"
------------------------------------------

Data File is as follows:

2009-10-17 10:15 5 0 0 22 27
2009-10-17 10:17 5 0 0 8 13
2009-10-17 10:19 5 0 0 8 13

Error message is:

 "connections2.gplot", line 17: Please use between 1 and 7 conversions, 
of type double (%lf)

Not sure what this means or what I must do to correct it.

Hello,

is there a way GNUplot to write y-values at places where the y-value is a
(local) extreme?

- Let's have a datafile with x and y values:

# x y
1 5
2 6
3 8
4 4
8 11
10 10

Than the y(x) plot of these data will have local maximum at [2; 6] and [8;
11] and the local minimum at [4; 4].

And I'm looking for a way that GNUplot would write "6" and "11" above points
of local maximums and "4" above the local minimum.

Is it possible somehow?

- I know special cases should be solved - e.g. data:

0 5
2 6
3 6
4 6
5 2

It should be decided whether the [2; 6], [3; 6] and/or [4; 6] are extremes
as well; but this is not the main question.

Or, is it possible the datafile to contain a special mark at points where
the y-values are wanted to be written? E.g.:

[Gnuplot-info] gnuplot and animation

Dear all.

Can anyone with experience on how to create animation based on outputs from
gnuplot please show me how to do it.

My problem is as follows:

1) I have multiple gnuplot files that represent a specific point in time.
2) Each file can be indepedently viewed using gnuplot, or otherwise be
written to a postscript (ps) file to be viewed using an appropriate program
such as ghostview.
3) However I want to join all these files together to one single animation
file, but I'm not sure how.

I've previously tried to convert the ps files to gif files, and then created
an animation out of these files. Unfortunately the quality is very low.
Probably during the conversion from ps to gif, alot of information is lost.
Anyone with a better solution please let me know.

In excel I do a trapezoidal integration sum(i)
((x(i+1)-x(i))*(y(i+1)+y(i))/2) . How can I do the same wiht gnuplot on a
data set?

there are many new features which haven't been backported from
4.3 to 4.2.x.

so you may
- wait for gnuplot 4.4
- ask somebody at macports or fink to compile 4.3-cvs
- compile it by yourself

'labels' is a plotting style taking the same arguments like the
'set label' command.

No, I did it the easy way and installed the most recent version  
available using macports.

As I'm not really an expert I'd be quite happy not having to try very  
special things. Installing development versions seems to be possible  
by macports, but:

"However, fetching via CVS may cause non-reproducible builds, so it  
is strongly discouraged"

So - can we do it on the 4.2.5 as well?

[Gnuplot-info] traffic plotting

Hello,

months ago I issued a request to visualize the traffic of a small bus  
network. At that time that was preparation for a project ahead, which  
now has to be worked upon.

The task is this:

I have a list, each line contains a pair of bus stops, represented by  
cartesian coordinates and a number of passengers travelling between  
these two stops. Thomas was so kind to propose a solution for this  
issue, unluckily I could not make it work up to now. The suggestion  
was the following:

set terminal aqua font "Times,5"
number_of_busstops = 271
plot "FGZ.xls" using 2:(my_lw=$1, 0/0) every 1::0::0 notitle, for  
[i=1:number_of_busstops] "" using 2:(my_lw=$1, $3) every 1::(i-1)::i  
with lines linetype 1 linewidth my_lw notitle

Using gnuplot 4.2.5 on a Mac I get this result:

gnuplot> set terminal aqua font "Times,5"
Terminal type set to 'aqua'
Options are '0 title "Figure 0" size 846 594 font "Times,5"  
noenhanced solid'
gnuplot> number_of_busstops = 271
gnuplot> plot "FGZ.xls" using 2:(my_lw=$1, 0/0) every 1::0::0  
notitle, for [i=1:number_of_busstops] "" using 2:(my_lw=$1, $3) every  
1::(i-1)::i with lines linetype 1 linewidth my_lw notitle
                                       ^
          ')' expected


The "^" points exactly at that place:

plot "FGZ.xls" using 2:(my_lw=^

I'd be grateful for any support to make this little script work.

you get exactly what you request:

plot 'data.plt' using 1:4, '' u 2:xtic(1), '' u 4 title 'error%' with lines

in detail:

uses column '1' for x and column '4' for 'y'
your x-values are in the range [0:1]

uses the datafile-linenumber for 'x', column '2' for 'y', and column '1' for
xtics labels.
now your x-range is [0:11] because you have 12 datalines, the xtic labels
are
re-named '0.05' to '1.0' (taken from column '1'). the y-values are all '150'

here you plot the data like in the 1st plot but stretched because the

I want the y-axis range to have the range of the data in the fourth
column for a plot of the first column on the x-axis and the fourth
column on the y-asis.

And example of the data:

0.01 150 7.0 4.666666666666667
0.05 150 5.0 3.3333333333333335
0.1 150 11.0 7.333333333333333
0.2 150 18.0 12.0

But whatever I try I always get the y-range to be [0:
max-of-the-second-column]. Apparently GnuPlot takes the second column as
y-axis. Is it possible to make GnuPlot take the fourth column as the
range for the y-axes?

'set label' doesn't have any effect on the plotting style 'with labels',
and a 'set style labels ...' isn't existing up to now, so you have to
give the rotation angle within the plot command:

plot 'file' u 1:2:3 with labels rotate

I need to ask anyhow. Is there a way to place a 2D plot on one of the planes
formed 
by two of the three axes used in a 3D surface plot? I would like to create
such a 2D 
plot simultaneously with a surface plot in 3D.

Incidentally I just purchased the book "Gnuplot in Action" by Janert. It is
excellent
and has already saved me hours of searching the web. The book, however, does
not appear to address the question I am asking in this post.

I wrote a script to read from protein data bank and to draw
molecular graphics in 3D based on Gnuplot.  The molecular
structure can spin on screen.  It is pretty cool, but
sometimes an object in the background may cover other objects
in the foreground.  I know this is stretching the capability
of Gnuplot, but if something can be done about this, Gnuplot
will perform at a different level.
