The key is the least of your worries with that plot.  It's quite 
completely unreadable.

You would need the development version of gnuplot for that, which has a 
'maxrows' option for 'set key'.  OTOH, you might be better of with just 
keeping the key out of the plotting area, where you don't have to worry 
about it occluding your data:

	set key outside

You're looking for 'multiplot' there.

[Gnuplot-info] how to break key and plotting

I have two things to solve and would highly appreciate if someone can help
me.

1. gnuplot default key is appeared "top to bottom" -wise. This is a problem
as in  http://old.nabble.com/file/p31089605/gnukey1.jpg  To avoid this, how
can I modify/break key something like this?

2. Like 'hold' in matlab, is their any equivalent option that allows to plot
two graphs on the same window? For example, instead the following two lines,

plot        “case097.cor” every 2 t ‘S1' w p, \

How can I plot like,

plot        “case097.cor” every 2 t ‘S1' w p # plot on screen
<is there any option?>
plot        “case097.cor” every 2 t ‘S1' w p # plot on the previous screen
without deleting previous plot

(Please ask me if my problem is not clear)

You're looking for the 'reread' command and its usages.  See also the 
'animate.dem' demo script.

You're looking for "help yrange", followed up by "help xrange".  See the 
"reverse" option.

I have a script which I call thus:

call 'plot_X' $100 1500

which plots 100 lines of a data file ending with the 1500th line How can I
"animate" this such that the line ending can be sequentially increased one
at a time without having to repeat the call manually? Is there some way the
call can be put inside a loop which increases the line ending or perhaps
repeated presses of, for example, the space bar could achieve this?

your data look like an energy loss spectrum of a particle detector.

in order to fit a gaussian you first need to do a background
subtraction. we assume an exponential function here.

background(x)=b0*exp(-x/bc)

we use only the two points at x=100 and x=700, resp. to determine
the background.

fit background(x) 'ts.dat' using ($1==100||$1==700?$1:0/0):2 via b0, b

and then we fit the gaussian

fit [90:800] gauss(x) 'ts.dat' using 1:($2-background($1)) via position,
amplitude, sigma

the complete script:

run the 'test' command (instead of 'plot') for a
specific terminal. if there are dashed lines - e.g.
postscript terminal - in the resulting plot, then
you may use them.
if there are none, you can only use solid lines.

[Gnuplot-info] Handling colors to visually analyze energy dispersion plots

Hi list,
I need to highlight the bands corresponding to a certain eigenvalue in my plots,
which means that I need to change the color of certain entries (rows in a 2D
matrix) of the data set to be plotted.
I.e.
Eigenvalue 1 -> green
Eigenvalue 2 -> blue
...
Eigenvalue N -> yellow
All the other eigenvalues -> red

Is there a way to do this?

define the gauss-function,

gauss(x)=amplitude/(sigma*sqrt(2.*pi))*exp(-(x-position)**2/(2.*sigma**2))

fit it to the data, 

fit 'datafilename' gauss(x) via amplitude, position, sigma

and then plot it:

plot 'datafilename' with histeps, gauss(x)

and try to set 'amplitude', 'position', and 'sigma' to reasonable
values before fitting, otherwise the fit may get lost.

[Gnuplot-info] problem with index use

 I try make a example of the use of index. I copy the file test.dat in
my folder:

And I writing:

plot "test.dat" index 0 using 1:2:3 with yerrorbars

But I get:

gnuplot>  plot "test.dat" index 0 using 1:2:3 with points
                                                        ^
         x range is invalid

gnuplot>  plot "test.dat" index 1 using 1:2:3 with points
                                                        ^
         x range is invalid

gnuplot>  plot "test.dat" index 2 using 1:2:3 with points
                                                        ^
         x range is invalid


Have you any idea?
