[Gnuplot-info] how to plot in new window?

Hi,

 

I'm using gnuplot (wgnuplot.exe) V4.1 on Windows7

 

Simple question - I use gnuplot to display basic data files, (e.g plot
"1.txt" with lines), each time I type plot or splot, gnuplot generates
the resulting graph in a separate window, however it always re-uses the
same window, discarding any previous content.

 

I really really really really want to display each graph in a NEW
window, so if I enter ten plot commands I want to end up with ten graphs
each in its own window.

I'm not bothered about interacting with the plots (like zoom, rescaling
etc), I just want to see more than one graph on the screen at the same
time.

Currently the only way I can figure do this is by running multiple
copies of gnuplot (i.e. one per graph), but this doesn't work well when
you need lots of graphs at the same time. 

 

Seems like such a simple thing I feel really stupid not being able to
figure it out...... all suggestions welcome

[Gnuplot-info] Fixing canvas size for 3d plots with pm3d.

Hi, everyone.

 

I want to control the size of canvas as well as that of figure. I found a solution for 2d plot and could adapt it to fit my need. But the same script does not work when I changed 'plot' command to 'splot' with pm3d. What am I missing?

 

I put the scripts at the bottom and eps files generated. First one is for 2d and is working well. The other is for 3d and is not working as I expected.

The difference between them is just:

+set pm3d map
 
-plot sin(x) ls 1
+splot sin(x) with pm3d

 

To run the script, perl is necessary. I'm using it to calculate the ratio, dimension of canvas and figure.

I'm using perl v5.12.3 built for MSWin32-x86-multi-thread (Strawberry Perl).

I'm running Matsuoka's MinGW build 4.5 patchlevel 0 in Windows 7 SP1, x64.

[Gnuplot-info] extract information from datapoint

Hi all, 

I managed to plot the data from a file using the dots style. The data is in
the format:

1 2 7
2 5 6
3 9 8
4 6 3

Is it possible to select a dot/datapoint in the graph with the mouse and
retrieve extra information? 
E.g. when I use the second column for the x values and the third column for
the y values, I want to be able to select a point (e.g. 9,8) in the graph to
find out which number (first column) it is.

I know I could use the label option and use the first column as labels.
However, this doesn't really work when using thousands of data points. The
labels become unreadable and I only want to know the number for the points
of interest. 

I hope it's possible and if not maybe there is a kind of workaround. Thanks

I just run into the same problem. To set a label on top, over or in front
of a surface or plot, use the "front" option of the "set label" command.

you can't plot the contents of variables by reading the variable
names from a file inside a plot command.
when reading from a file, the plot command expects numbers.

you may write the fit parameters to a file after each individual
fit and plot the data inside this file later.

before the first fit open a file to print the fit parameters into with

set print "some_filename"

after each fit, save the fit parameters (e.g. a and b) with

print a, b

after the fits are done you have a data file containing all the fit
parameters which you may plot

plot "some_filename" using 0:1

I have the following problem:
After a series of fits I want to summarize my fit results in a seperate plot
with every result of the parameter of the various fits depicted as a point.
Say my parameters are named a1....a7 for the fits I have (all have only one
parameter of interest)
I tried the following:

plot '-' w p ls 2 
1 a1 
2 a2  
3 a3  
4 a4  
5 a5  
6 a6  
7 a7
e

However, gnuplot just plots the points (0,1),
(1,2),(2,3),(3,4),(4,5),(5,6),(6,7)

If I explicetly write 

plot '-' using 1:2 w p ls 2 
1 a1 
2 a2  
3 a3  
4 a4  
5 a5  
6 a6  
7 a7
e

it says ' Skipping data file with no valid points'
The same happens if i don't try to draw my fitparameters, but explicetly set
the parameters befor, e.g. a1=3, a2=2, a3 =0,...

So basically the questions: how do I plot parameters as data points?

As a workaround I could also print the results into a table file and load
this again. How do I do that?
Using the logfile of the fit is not an option for me as there is too much
additional information which I would have to delete manually.

I am using gnuplot 4.4 patchlevel 4 on a windows system.

More to the point, comments inside a continued line won't do what you 
expect.  gnuplot behaves the same as just about every Unix-style command 
line scripting language supporting '#' comments and '\' line 
continuation does: first, line continuation is resolved, resulting in a 
single long line.  Then comments are evaluated.

So comments inside a continued line will turn off everything following 
the '#', including stuff on later lines.

But it complains "invalid character \" at the end of the 4th line.

This seems to me that comment within plot statement cannot be recognized,
is this really the case?

[Gnuplot-info] How to change histogram colors

Hi!

I am new to Gnuplot and I try create a "stacked" histogram from some 
output of my application.

Currently I use the following code:
> set boxwidth 1.00
> set style fill solid 1.00 border -1
> set key autotitle columnheader
> set key invert reverse Left outside
> set yrange [0:*]
> set xrange [0:*]
> set auto x
> unset xtics
> set style data histogram
> set style histogram rowstacked

I then plot the histogram via the following command:

Now my question:

How can I change the colors? I can change the order of the columns in my 
.dat file, yes.

But ideally I would like to assign each column (and thus each part of a 
histogram bar) a specific color.

Is that possible with Gnuplot?

Also, I would also like to create a "grey-scale" version of the stacked 
histogram, using different patterns rather than different colors.

If possible, how would I do that?

in a two-step process it's possible.
after plotting for the 1st time (e.g. into the 'dumb' terminal) set
the ytics (here: 8 tics):

I have tried
 echo plot x | gnuplot -p
on cygwin. 
The plot remained after gnuplot was finished.
Did you really use cygwin version gnuplot?
If you use windows native gnuplot, gnuplot will close immediately.

I'm trying to show a plot by feeding gnuplot from stdin using libggi (using
display-directx) but gnuplots immediately closes the plot window even if I
use -persist. Any ideas?

My gnuplot version is 4.4 patchlevel 4
I'm using cygwin, libGGI and display-directx

Example:

./derivate | gnuplot -p -e "unset logscale y; plot '-' using 1:2 every::2"

gnuplot shows the plot window but immediately closes it and ends.

Also with pause:

./derivate|gnuplot -p -e "unset logscale y; plot '-' using 1:2 every::2;
pause -1"

The same problem persist. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

when starting gnuplot, some information is printed.
the last line tells which terminal is used.
what's written there? 'unkonwn'?


After I enter the splot command into the linux terminal, nothing happens.
I'd expect a new window to open with the plot? Is this related to the
configuration of Linux (ubuntu, on my pc), or do i need to enter a different
command for the plot to actually appear?

It's possible, but not automatically.  What you can do is, e.g.

	set label '* 10^5' at graph -0.05, graph 0.95
	plot 'data' using 1:($2/1.0e5)

I.e. divide the data by the power of ten you need, then indicate the 
rescaling by a text label.

plots a data point, while

5000 ls 1 lt rgb "#FF0000"

plots a (constant) function.

please be aware that "," is a bad separator since other countries
use it where the english use a ".", more over it does not improve
readability of the files.

define the data separator if it's not a space.
enclose the filename in quotes because it's a string.
use 'splot' for 3d plots.

There is a hack described in
http://gnuplot-tricks.blogspot.com/2010/02/parametric-plot-from-file-ii.html If
you are really pressed for it, you could check that out.
