I knew about offset and as far as I know that's not what I was looking
for, when I wrote

The tics labels in LaTeX are typeset right justified, so that they are
perfectly aligned to the axis. By offsetting them I can slide them more
close to the ylabel. But the ugly gap I described will then appear between
the tics labels and the axis. Sorry if I did not describe it clearly
enough but the main problem is that there is too much space between ylabel
and the y axis itself.

I definitely know that Computer Modern fonts by Donald Knuth and their
modifications are proportional, so that it is a way harder to say what is
"character width". But as far as I know gnuplot allows me to use
coordinate system "character" e.g. for the mentioned "offset" even with
epsLaTeX terminal. I did not inquire if it takes "em" units or some
averaged width but I saw this system precise enough to reposition a key
full of control characters to the place where I wanted it.

Thank you very much for this suggestion. I tried it and it seems I don't
need to use extra backslash for commands any more, that's much more
comfortable.

[Gnuplot-info] information about a point in scatter

Hi all, 

I have the following problem and I hope you can help me with it:

I create 2D scatter plots from a text file, which works fine. But now I want
to retrieve additional information about a specific data point. For example,
I plot the weights of different design alternatives against the production
costs. Now I want to know the number of the design with the lowest costs and
the highest weight. Plotting the design numbers as labels is not really an
option, because their are to many points which makes the labels unreadable. 

I thought that it might be possible to retrieve data from a point by moving
the mouse over that point. But I'm not sure if that is possible at all. If
not or if you have other ideas, pleas let me know!

That version is from 2009.  Version 4.6 is just being released.  So I'll 
suggest you update sometime soon.

You may be better off using single-quoted strings for those, i.e. '{,}'.

That reasoning is based on the assumption that there is such a thing as 
"four lengths of a character" --- using proportional fonts in an 
advanced type-setter like LaTeX, that's not the case.

That said, the thing you're looking for would be the 'offset' option to 
"set xtics" et al.

Tested with firefox 3.6.13.
lines work fine (get fat once)
but no Zoom

Hello everyone,

I was using G N U P L O T Version 4.2 patchlevel 6 with epsLaTeX export. I
used set format "$%g$" as encouraged in gnuplot help. I wanted to conform
with central European convention of decimal sign and to prevent LaTeX form
making space behind such decimal sign I used set decimalsign "{,}".

The problem I encountered with these settings is as follows: gnuplot does
not recognise LaTeX control characters, so that it made space for four
extra characters in major tics labels of the y axis. This extra space
appeared as ugly gap between tics labels and axis label of the y axis and
the area of the plot itself was oppressed.

Gnuplot help tells the solution of such problem for the key using the
width setting with negative value. But I haven't found any solution for
tics. Is there any way to tell gnuplot to subtract that four lengths of a
character from calculated space for tics labels?

file in postscript ".ps" with some weird changes
but I need gif or png for my work.

Same here, very strange darkening of the gridlines on the re-entry of the
mouse cursor.
Also, I'm a linux laptop mouse, using chrome, and the zoom thing isn't
working for me
at all. Is it supposed to work?

10.0.2 or Chrome 17.0.963.79, everytime my mouse pointer enters on the demo
canvas area on the right, lines become thicker and thicker, while details
become more "pixelated".
Is this a problem of mine or of anybody?

I can only reproduce you picture by using:
set term jpeg x000000

So maybe you could try:
set term jpeg xFFFFFF

Maybe it's also worth taking a look at the background specification in a certain
WGNUPLOT.INI
or you could have a "pop-up menu accessed by pressing the right mouse
button or selecting ‘Options‘ from the system menu" where you can set
the background color.

These last two windows specific options I found by googling a bit (
http://www.manpagez.com/info/gnuplot/gnuplot-4.4.0/gnuplot_453.php ).
As I'm on linux myself, I don't think I can help further.

Hi, I modified the script as follow

gnuplot <<'EOF'
reset
set term jpeg
set output "hello.jpg"
#plot sin(x)
test
set output
EOF

and I got the attached picture. Still the background is black as well
as no x-y axis was drew.
I used the gnuplot 4.4 patchlevel 4 for cygwin on win7.

isn't elegant... but should work.

First thing is to include a "front" in your label command:
set label textcolor rgb "white" "HOLA" at -20,-20 front

Then, and here comes the ugly fix, you should edit the 'output.tex'
file and change the line:
      \put(2570,1600){\makebox(0,0)[l]{\strut{}HOLA}}%
to:
      \put(2570,1600){\makebox(0,0)[l]{\strut{}{\color{white}HOLA}}}%
as the gnuplot gives (at least to me) the error:
"Package color not loaded in conjunction with terminal option `colourtext'"

I don't have your data to test your specific example, but that works normally:

set object 1 rectangle front from -30,-30 to 30,30 fc rgb "black" behind
set label textcolor rgb "white" "HOLA" at -5,-0.5
plot sin(x) linecolor rgb "white"

You're sure the point -20,-25 is in your plot? If you put the label
outside the plot it'll be invisible, of course. If that's not the
problem, I can't think now of anything else.

I am trying to add a small text in the plotting area like this

  set object 1 rectangle front from -30,-30 to 30,30 fc rgb "black" behind
  set label textcolor rgb "white" "HOLA" at -20,-25
  splot "'$1'" binary record=384x128 format="%double" u
($2*sin($1)):($2*cos($1)):(log10($3)) notitle

but I cannot see the HOLA anywhere...

What is wrong?
