Hi,

I have gnuplot cvs installed but dont seem to be able to redo it.

I dont have tetex so I did:
./configure  --without-tutorial

make runs fine but make install craps out:

More to the point it's not meant to be used like this.  Pseudo-column 
zero is for counting data points in non-matrix data files.  In matrix 
mode you get pseudo columns 1 and 2 instead.  1 is the x coordinate 
(column count), 2 is the y coordinate (row number).

It says so in the documentation, too, although it's not overly clear. 
See 'help matrix'.

It is not meant to work like this, is it?

No.  You just don't understand about sampling and finite resolution.

You're plotting a function that only exists in for -1 < x < 1, but over 
a range from -10 to 10.  Which means that you're wasting 90 percent of 
sampling points on nonexistent values.  The remaining 10 points at which 
the function actually returns a usable value come nowhere close enough 
to +/- 1.0 to generate the huge y amplitude you expect.

And how do you suppose infinity would fit onto a finite range of display?

I suggest you run an experiment: find the biggest number that's smaller 
than 1.0, and compute atanh() of that.  Explain why the result is so 
much smaller than infinity.

Hello -- I just downloaded gnuplot version 4.2
dated March 2007 to run with Windows Vista.
The help pages are not available with Windows Vista.
Are you working on this? -- the help pages
are very informative and most useful to consult --
so this is a valuable user feature.

sin(x*y)'. And after I hit enter a large number - probably infinite - of
such messages appeared:

XFCE4? New windows get focus : off; focus follows mouse. Keep mouse over  
terminal calling gnuplot. If gnuplot  window pops up under cursor it gets  
focus, otherwise it does not get focus.
