I agree that the rendering in Firefox is worse than either Opera
or Konqueror (ksvg).  However both Opera and ksvg have at least one
annoying bug that can be seen in the vertical positioning of the expression
inside the integral on the test page.  It should share a baseline with
the integral sign itself but instead it shows up level with the
superscript '=E2=88=9E'. The bug is that if a text chunk
contains positioning information, but the text consists only of=20
spaces ('\040'), then the vertical positioning is ignored.
This leaves the "current position" in the wrong place vertically
for any following text chunks.

Opera also fails to render transparent pattern-fill correctly.

No I have Opera 9.20 and dont have any special plugin for svg. Download  
fily type info clearly shows this as a file type handled internally by  
Opera.  I do see "Enable gif/svg animation" in the prefs. (Advances -  
Content , checkbox). I dont know if this has any bearing and dont recall  
if this is on by default.

Opera certainly scales SVG well and make a better job of rendering my  
gnuplot output than firefox.

That page seems to come up just about the same in Opera and firefox for me  
(running Gentoo linux untested on win) except that Opera scales fonts  
continously and smoothly. Opera maintains appropriate font size for the  
axes lables as display gets bigger. FFx quickly makes a mess of it with  
huge fonts that overwrite each other and spread onto the graph itself.

FF 2.0.0.3 , seems to render your test page and scale the fonts with  
cntl-+ although not
in a very linear fashion. Code part and fancy stuff on the graph are fine  
but axis labels quickly get too large.

In both the graph gets dumped on top of the script text. That is what I  
have always seen in gnuplot docs and demos so I dont know if it  
intentional or a common bug in things not getting rendered as you intend.

It seems that the page is not well tested for different sized screens. If  
I make the text illegibly small I do get the graph to the right of the  
script text. But at readable font sizes they overlap almost completely.

Thanks for your improvements here. Anything that can help accelerate the  
recognition of this format is good news. We've been stuck with bitmaps way  
longer than was technically necessary.

OK guys.  I've modified the svg terminal to avoid using 'em' units for
horizontal spacing.  This degrades the horizontal positioning on 
compliant viewers, but it means that firefox etc do something reasonable.
I've also corrected a scope error on the text path components, which may
improve the vertical positioning on some viewers as well.  The change is
in the cvs trees for both 4.2 and 4.3.

I have opera 9.20 installed, but it has no native svg support at all.
Is there a more recent opera, or are you using some 3rd-party plugin?

I made that change, but I'm having second thoughts.  It doesn't seem to
change the behaviour in ksvg at all.  But in firefox, adding the "pt"

最近、私に投資系の情報商材の話で、知人よりよく相談がきます。

I understand that.  The SVG output by gnuplot is admittedly very ugly.
If I were starting from scratch to implement a  program with SVG output,
I would put a priority on using the most widely supported subset of the
full standard, and design it with XML-like syntax in mind.
But in the case of gnuplot's text formatting, the basic infrastructure
was already in place, based on the original PostScript implementation.
It was possible to map the current set of operations [most of them 
anyway] onto legal SVG output, so that's what I did.  Unfortunately,
it turns out that some of the operations are not well supported by the
common browsers.

In the case of the mozilla/firefox SVG code, this has been listed as a
known issue in Bugzilla for about 3 years now. I see that some progress
has been made just in the last couple of months, so maybe we won't have
to wait very much longer for better native SVG support.

I started sending my gnuplot output as svg , which is an ideal format for  
this sort of thing. When it caused more problems than it solved I dropped  
back to png which is not at all good for this but works.

If you hope to see svg adopted, producing output that challenged renderers  
can get right would help it spread.

Opera is one of the better renderers I know but it does get this leading  
wrong because it is not using 5pt font.

I just sussed the font rendering issue relating to the following use group  
post but it failed to post so I'll put it here:

I dont see any mention of the default unit. It may be that Opera is  
correctly ignoring this if it does not parse correctly.

this is not a leading problem, gnuplot very specifically defines the  
position of each line of your comment (on the basis of getting 5pt font)

This issue seems to be it is not correctly parsing font-size desciptor  
produced by gnuplot and thus is correctly ignoring it.

BTW you may find your output is more protable if you use generic names  
like serif or sans-serif , rather than proprietary names for specific  
fonts. That will give the rendering agent more chance of finding a correct  
match in the fonts available on the taget system.

without looking at the details , why not just make your 2D data 3D by  
adding a fixed Z coord where you want it to appear?

[Gnuplot-bugs] gnuplot 4.2 gets Xwindows down

Hi,guys

There's a big problem with my gnuplot 4.2 patchlevel 0 on Linux
2.6.11-1.1369_FC4. When I drag and rotate figures with mouse in the
figure window (terminal X11), it often gets my Xwindows not respond.
What I can do is just to kill and restart X. :-( 

I can't figure out where the rub is, so wanna get some help from you.

Here's some information I can give:
My gnuplot is compiled from gnuplot-4.2.0.tar.gz with gcc 4.0.2-8.
OS: Linux 2.6.11-1.1369_FC4
Arch: i686 (Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.60GHz) with 1G DDR RAM.

I have just tracked some spurious results down to the fact that plot see=

to be processing comment lines or rather it is getting called once and  =

once only on a file that has only comment lines (and no blank lines).

The short answer is dont use Vista.
