Hi! Today I was quite confused with with ,---- | gnuplot -e "plot sin(2*pi*10*x); pause -1" `---- since it displays a sine with frequency of 1/10 and not 10. This is caused by aliasing (the sample rate is too low). That behaviour is very confusing to new users. Maybe it would be good to set the default sample-rate higher, e.g. 500 or sth? There's another thing I found out while examining the problem: With a sample count of 100 the plotted sine should actually have the frequency 0, which is a constant (follows from frequency domain considerations). Setting the samples to ,---- | set samples 101; | plot sin(2*pi*10*x); `---- gives a constant at 0, so I would think that the actual sample rate is one less than the set one. (I did not see throug the source). Thanks for your considerations, Max |

Hello You wrote exe file. So that I guess you are using windows. Gnuplot does not have automated installer. Therefore you have to install manually. Please open 'Readme.Window' by a text editor or a notepad. (Execute the notepad and drop Readme.Window to the notpad window.) Read the instruction in the file. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to ask again. Good luck! I have a data-set of 480 data points. Gnuplot automatically sets the xrange to 500, with xtics in 50 intervals. Next I explicitly set x2tics set x2tics ("A" 100,"B" 200,"C" 300,"D" 400,"E" 480) When I plot the data the x2tics do not align with the xtics. The A,B,C,... labels get their own tics at 103,206,... The xtics at the lower x-axis are repeated at the upper x-axis. This is especially obvious when grid is set. Once I explicitly set xrange [0:500] the x2tics align perfectly. I am using Version 4.2 patchlevel 4. Is this a bug or am I using x2tics incorrectly? Dear all, I am trying to use x2tics in logscale while plotting data from a file, and I think there is a problem if the user does not specify the xrange. I used gnuplot 4.4.2. (I was not able to put the current CVS current to draw anything in logscale.) Let's assume there is a file "test.dat" containing these three lines: 5 0.1 100 0.3 8000 0.03 Then we enter the following commands at gnuplot prompt: set logscale set xtics nomirror set x2tics 10,2,10000 # or whatever values. plot [1:10000] "test.dat" using 1:2 # that works ok. plot "test.dat" using 1:2 # That does not work good. The problem is that if no range is specified, then the two scales (top and bottom) do not match. Actually the bottom scale (x1) is slightly enlarged and goes from 1 to 10,000 to look nicer. On the other hand, the top scale (x2) is tightly bound to the extrema of the data, and starts from 5 to 8000. As a result, the x2tics do not match the data points. The workaround is to specify manually the range to be used. The current CVS version refused altogether to draw in logscale so I could not test if the problem has been fixed in the development version. Version 4.5 patchlevel 0 (Gentoo revision r0) last modified jeu. nov. 18 19:50:05 CET 2010 System: Linux 2.6.36 gnuplot> plot "test.dat" using 1:2 # that was ok. Let's try the logscale. gnuplot> set logscale gnuplot> plot "test.dat" using 1:2 x_min should not equal x_max! Best regards, Jérôme Borme |

"$1" is a shorthand for "column(1)", but for timedata you need to use "timecolumn(1)": plot 'timedata" using (timecolumn(1)):(($2)*($3)) on the other hand, plot 'timedata" using 1:(($2)*($3)) should also work. Hi, I have found out that when creating a plot with time format in the x-axis, using comands set timefmt "%s" set xdata time there is a difference in the use of the column specifier. There is no problem by using the reduced form. plot "timedata" u 1:2 works perfectly, however when using as plot 'timedata" using ($1):($2) the time data is not properly interpreted. This is a problem when somebody wants to create this kind of plot by producing a mathematical operation in the y-axis, as it could be ... plot 'timedata" using ($1):(($2)*($3)) cheers, Javier |

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hello! I just downloaded gnuplot 4.4 patchlevel 2 and am having the following weird problem: I have two variables V=2 and L=20 and if I try to divide V by L, the result is 0. I had to pick the whole script apart until I found it - the desired outcome of this command is of course the output 0.1. Here is the script: ####### set terminal png transparent size 1200,800 enhanced set xtics 0.1 set grid xtics ytics mxtics mytics set output 'U_vs_s.png' set key left top set key box linestyle 1 set xlabel 's' set ylabel 'U(s)' # Halfwidth of strip in m a=2 # Strip width in m w=2*a # Strip thickness in m d=2e-3 #Voltage in V V=2 # Width of simulation box in m L=20 # Speed of light in m/s c=2.99792458e8 # Permeability constant mu0=4*pi*1e-7 # Permittivity eps0=1/(mu0*(c**2)) # ANSYS fitting Kx=pi*(V/L)*eps0 KCorrX=7.293e-3 y1=(8*(c**2)) y2=(w*d) y3=V/L # Here this strange error occurs set label 'y1=%10.5e',y1 at graph 0.01, graph 0.87 set label 'y2=%10.5e',y2 at graph 0.01, graph 0.84 set label 'y3=%10.5e',y3 at graph 0.01, graph 0.81 # the former line outputs "y3=0.00000e+000" #Ky=y1/y2 KCorrY=1.413 plot 'Uac.dat' using ($1):($3) title 'data' w p 1 ####### Is this indeed a bug or am I doing something exceptionally stupid? Thanks in advance for looking into the matter. Kind regards, P. dear colleagues, only recently I came into much trouble with obscure looking plots generated automatically inside a code generating function tables and plotting them to *.png files: obviously in case of numbers with a three digit exponent representation e.g. from a standard format print in gfortran like 0.123-150 these are misunderstood by gnuplot (here as 0.123) , like for the file infquad.tab appended, although I did not change anything regarding ''set zero''. I found nothing in the documentation which gives a warning concerning this, maybe an oversight from my side. If you ''plot "infquad.tab" using 1:2 w l '' you get a completely erroneous picture near zero. My current version: Version 4.4 patchlevel 0 last modified March 2010 System: Linux 2.6.32-5-amd64 best regards p. spellucci |
