in the PC in the University I will upload them on my site on Monday.

now available on SourceForge.  Windows binaries will appear over the 
next few days.

I have prepared gnuplot 4.4.3 binaries (Windows, Cygwin, and DJGPP) using source 4.4 branch.
As I have told, my help file system does not give correct hlp file.

Therefore I have uploaded gnuplot.rtf generated from gnuplot.doc.
Could someone compile it to wgnuplot.hlp and send me an attachment file.

FYI: I have replaced the computer in my university from Win XP pro 32 bit to Win 7 Home 64 bit.
For 64 bit windows, the djgpp cannot be executed because it has 16 bit parts. Using Dox Box[1], I can
build DJGPP binaries on windows 7 64bit.

It doesn't.  Newer Windows (needlessly, IMHO) causes problems with the 
old help.  Those problems can be overcome a good deal more easily than 
by changing help file format.

It's just too new for that, right now.  A new feature like that needs a 
bit of settling-the-dust time before it makes sense to include it in 
what refers itself as a "patchlevel" update.  Basically, those shouldn't 
contain any new features, just patches.

My approach has been that nothing non-trivial gets added to the 4.4.x tree
unless it has already been demonstrated to work well in 4.5.
Since I'm still seeing lots of discussion about issues with the Windows help 
system in 4.5, I don't want to touch it in 4.4.

You need to make sure that:
- you have TikZ version >= 2.0 (you may check the file
/usr/local/texlive/2010/texmf-dist/doc/generic/pgf/ChangeLog or
equivalent; mine starts with "2010-10-25 ... Released version 2.10")
- you have regenerated the style (if you have created the style files
in past and put them into your TeX tree, you need to generate new
ones)

There have been substantial changes in the terminal recently which
require new tex support files.

Yes. I suffered from the same sorts of problem.
Two things to check first:

1) The new code requires TikZ version 2.0 or better.  My linux distro (Mandriva) 
doesn't have this yet even though it was released in 2007.  So I had to 
upgrade it manually.  In practice this meant downloading a current
version of the pgf package from CTAN:
   http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/graphics/pgf/
I used it to replace the older version of pgf that I had in texlive-2007 and
everything worked with no problems.

If this is your problem, you should (I think) generate the following error message
when you try to process output from the new terminal in pdflatex:

  PGF/TikZ version >= 2.0 is required, but 1.18 was found


2) If you don't get that error message, it may mean that you are running an
old version of the TeX support code from the previous gnuplot installation. 
Make sure the TeX support packages for gnuplot were updated to match the
new lua terminal driver.  I.e. you may need to run texconfig after installing
the new gnuplot.

I compile a CVS version of Gnuplot (either development or stable) under
ubuntu. The compilation and the installation went right. I can generate a
tex file representing my figure. Everything goes ok until the LaTeX
compilation. I have a tons of error because xcolor does not recognize the
"new way" of setting the colors in the teX file. 

\gpcolor{rgb color={0.000,0.000,0.000}}

I checked with previous versions and the colors were not defined this way in
the LaTeX file...

\gpcolor{\gprgb{0}{0}{0}}

The second one is compiled without any problems... Can someone help me with
this issue?

I tried to patch AquaTerm, so it now builds as 64-bit, it does link to
gnuplot, but for a misterious reason it hans forever when I try to
plot something and I need to figure out how to figure out what goes
wrong.

(Somebody else contributed a set of patches that change all "int"s
into "int_32" etc. I will try to merge those patches as well.)

I need to explore why that happens since the version from macports
works just fine. There are many aspects of AquaTerm that I still try
to understand. I'm willing to work on fixing AquaTerm, but I'm still
learning.

AquaTerm may not be in the best shape, I know, but as long as it works
(if I can figure out how to build it for 64-bit so that it won't
hand), there is no reason to discard it yet.

I didn't follow other issues to closely, but since the old help
apparently causes problems on newer windows, I would vote to include
the new help for Windows (my preference would be without ActiveX since
that one is likely to fail in various situations, but that is not up

JFYI: I was working with Windows XP two days ago and it kept
complaining that ActiveX is not allowed, so all I got was empty help.

This depended somehow on whether I opened chm file or if I used "help
something" from within gnuplot. I think that in the second case I
wasn't able to follow links (most probably due to some internet
explorer permission settings, but I didn't have time to explore into
details).

All I wanted to say is that ActiveX might not be present/enabled
out-of-the-box on windows computers either.

iirc, aquaterm has no 64-bit support, in that it does not build 64bit if
you try. x11 does and gnuplot does. hence if you try to force aquaterm
build, you get unfindable objects. discard aquaterm or revitalize it; it
is a lamentable loss, but it is dead, imho.

My current plan is to tag CVS for version 4.4.3 next weekend, and upload the 
corresponding source tarball to SourceForge.   Windows binaries to be uploaded
when they are ready, as usual.  PATCHLEVEL is already set to 4.4.3 in cvs as of today.

I think you're exaggerating. Having just done "make pdffigures" on
the CVS source I see two cases where text spills onto a figure,
one case where one figure is partly occluded by another, and zero
cases where a float takes ghost space on the following page. I do
see several cases of orphaned headings for plotting styles. And
the footer looks too small for typographical balance, though that
presents a trade-off with keeping the file compact.

The problem with the (few) cases where a figure is partly
overwritten seems to be that picins defines the effective height
of a "parpic" paragraph by the typeset height of the text. If part
of a figure sticks down below the text it has to fend for itself
and will get clobbered by anything that sticks out far enough to
the right in the next unit of stuff on the vertical stack.

In typestting complex material with (any variety of) TeX it's
often necessary to make a few tweaks to get things just right. In
this case judicious insertion of \vspace would help.
Unfortunately this is not easy when the TeX is machine-generated.

Then you are doing something wrong. Seriously.
I have never, ever, seen gnuplot crash because of a library incompatibility.
Fail to compile or link - yes.  
But crash after changing a shared library version - no.

Static builds are terrible, because the slightest change to any one
of the supporting libraries requires that you go back and recompile
everything in sight.

Anyhow, are you seriously suggesting that you would prefer to have
cairo + pango + lua + libgd + cetera bundled with gnuplot?
No way that would it more likely to run on "12 different platforms"!

That would be perfect and something that I always wanted to have. (It
would be great to have that for other platforms as well, but for
windows it is much more important than for others.)

Out of curiosity: what don't these files (such as binaries for windows
compiled from CVS) simply end up on sourceforge, even if they are just
nightly builds and not official release yet?

consequently a trivial task for anyone who wants to build the sources.
We have several people building it on 12 different
platforms/architectures. All we/they need to do is run a single
command (so even beginners can do it) and it then works out-of-the-box
for anyone on almost any given OS and processor (except for ancient
operating systems). This is something that I really miss in gnuplot.
No matter what I do, it is always some incompatibility somewhere in
the long list of libraries that makes gnuplot crash in one way or
another.
