Hello everybody, I just made a quick hack, by grabbing some code from the keyring PC-Conduit, adapting it to win32, and building a little MFC GUI for it. It is not a real Conduit, but just a tool, that will read in the pdb file from the harddisk, display a list of records, and decrypts it if you select a record. Its not possible to enter data though. Is anybody interested in this? If yes I may clean up the code and release it. (Event though there are for sure a lot of security issues.) Btw., what is the status of the keyring project anyway? Is anybody still using this software? I and quite a bunch of my friends do. Has the latest release any serious security issues? Thank you, Stefan |

If you have that buggy version, there's a simple trick. Just change system time to a time before you entered the password. You should also set the password timeout interval to its maximum. Jochen |

If your password was generated by keyring itself I've done the very thing Martin mentions. Specifically, I modified keyring-link to brute force password by starting with ones that are randomly generated by keyring. You have to tip the program off in terms of whether you used mixed case, the length of the password, etc. I managed to brute force my password in under 42s on a PII-350. Of course this isn't a very good general-purpose hack. I only wrote it because I actually needed it. Thankfully, the new realease of keyring (whenever that comes) should close this backdoor (the reliance on the Palm SysRandom() function). Thanks goes to the individual who published the original strip(c) exploit on Bugtraq. I basically just borrowed their implementation of SysRandom() and went from there. I've attached the diff for anyone that's curious. To be a general purpose cracking tool this really needs to be cleaned up. For example I've hardcoded the "tips" above into the gen_passwd() routine. -Alan -- al...@ma... Sorry, there's meant to be no hope. :-) You might be able to find it using minor bugs in 1.0, but I'm afraid I don't have time at the moment (changing jobs, study, etc) to chase it. So, if you want to try, go ahead. Alternatively we could write a program to brute-force the password. You might be able to even do that with Perl based on the existing keyring-link program. -- Martin |

I couldn't find any in the documentation! The keyring application should just ask for the password when it is opened the first time. But in 1.1.pre2 that is broken. Best way is to remove keyring first, then install and run a different version and enter the password. Jochen |

Hi, I downloaded 1.1pre2 and installed on my visor. But when I want to create new entries, I'm asked for the master password. I haven't set the master password, so I don't know what it is. If I go to "set password", I'm asked for the master password before being able to change it (fair enough :) Is there a standard master password to enter, when the keyring software is first installed? I noticed on the GNU Keyring home page that the psedo-random number generat= ion on PalmOS is probably insecure (being that PalmOS really isn't ment for= high-security, this doesn't surprise me). Hello, Dell M. Garner noticed that the busy "encrypting..." form isn't displayed any more when changing passwords. I accidently removed that in my secure snib patch. Here is a small diff to add it again. It must be applied after the keyring.diff I sent to this list. I have put a big patch combining my three pending patches at the sourceforge patch forum. Jochen |

One suggestion is that you should be able to define "templates" for different types of information that you might want to store, and only one of them is "Name/Account/Password/Notes". However, this feels a little like overkill for a Palm application. On the other hand having no structure at all feels insufficient, because a lot of information does have headings in this way. I'll take a look this week. This was introduced by my 'secure snib' patch. I didn't noted that the SetPasswd_run function is also called when creating the initial database. I have solved this by moving the dialog code of SetPasswd_Run in a new function SetPasswd_Ask and calling that from CreateDB instead. Setting the initial password doesn't need reencryption, which is what SetPasswd_Run also did. I tested it only with pose. This patch should also fix the bug that keyring gets unusable if the master password wasn't entered on the first invocation. A minor thing is that you have to enter the master password a third time after a new database was created when you create the first entry. IMHO this is acceptable. I have attached the patch. Jochen |

If other people here would like to become co-maintainers on SourceForge (CVS access, ability to make releases, etc.) please raise your hands. The changes in 1.1pre2 should fix the snib hole. I'll be making a release of that when the recent patches and merged, and when I hear whether there are any bugs in the preview releases or not. =20 At the moment we seem to have the problem that not many people test the program until it gets to a final release, and then lots of people use it at once. So if there are bugs that I don't catch, a lot of people are hurt. > I'm also guessing that you could just grab 1.1pre2, and then later we > could cvs merge all our changes.=20 Yes, that's the way to go. --=20 Martin=20 |

Do you mean cut, copy and paste within the key edit form? If so, it's not working on my Palm Vx (OS 3.5.0), or in POSE with the same ROM image. Martin has said that it works for him, but it hasn't worked for me in the last two releases. My patch to make it work for me is still on sourceforge, and applies cleanly to the latest CVS source. I'm guessing that Martin is on vacation someplace. ;) I'm also guessing that you could just grab 1.1pre2, and then later we could cvs merge all our changes. patrick. +-- Patrick Haller +1 717 249 7270 Network Administrator PAdotNET http://www.pa.net |

Excelent.. Thanks for your code Patrick. I'm really interested in "paste" support. I wonder if someone is already working on that. If not, I'll tackle it here... --G On Wed, Jun 20, 2001 at 03:02:11PM +0000, Patrick Haller wrote: > Hello, > > I, too, just subscribed a few days ago, and there doesn't seem to be > much traffic on the list. Hello,
I, too, just subscribed a few days ago, and there doesn't seem to be
much traffic on the list. And it appears that it filters attachments
out, so I'll include code directly.
For Find support, I've added the code listed below after my .sig.
Also, there is a security hole in keyring-0.75 and keyring-1.0.
The snib is not completely destroyed and may be used by a hacked
version of gnukeyring. If you want to try it, either compile 1.0 or
earlier after commenting out the passwd check and run it on a palmos
that has 1.0 or earlier on it. You'll be able to get into all the data.
This is also available at:
