If the modules are under /lib/modules/<kernel version>/kernel and if the output of modinfo is the same as with 2.4 kernel modules then I think it should work. Note: if modules are stored someplace else you could invoke gmodconfig with -m and pass it the new location. The previous release (0.3) had been packaged for Debian. But I wasn't able to contact the packager for the 0.4 release. I don't know if someone else packaged that release or not. Cyril |

Hello, I was Wondering if it is safe/possible to use gmodconfig with kernel 2.6? Also, are there any available Debian packages. Thanks, |

Hi, thanks for the pointer. A linux hardware database is a good idea. What have you got so far? I was looking at CLAN w.r.t automating the download, build and install of kernel modules: http://fc-solve.berlios.de/CLAN/ I'm also going towards using XSA to check new modules' versions. I haven't given much thought about automatic hardware probing in gmodconfig. I think Red Hat and others already have tools to do this, which could be leveraged. Some of you have experienced a compilation problem while building gmodconfig with libxml++ 0.21. I just checked in a patch (sent by Trevor Spiteri) into the CVS repository, which fixes this problem. Cyril |

Though we haven't gotten as far on the actual development side of things I started working on a project similar to the one you are working on now (and ended up not finding much support). I have a domain name that you are welcome to work with if you wish and even some resources. I'd love to help out if possible. I was hoping for a more simplified interface, (ie automatic hardware probing and checking against a database on the server) but you have a good start. I think there is definitely need for both sides of the project. You can see the beginning of what I had thought about at www.linuxrepository.org -- Chris Tooley <ch...@to...> |
