I expect that this printer would work with the LaserJet 4250 driver in
Gutenprint 5.2.14 or 5.2.15-pre1.

I have a HP Laserprint 4250n printer and MacBook Air Mojava 14.3 and they are not linking.

I need the printer driver software and HP do not have it available.

I read in a forum you maybe able to assist??

Your printer is not a piece of junk. 

I think there are several fairly easy solutions.  The first thing to try is to make sure the G4 is set to wake on Network Activity.  You can make sure that is enabled by going to System Preferences -> Energy Settings.  There is a checkbox there to set that option.  Then make sure you have a print queue set up on the machine that runs 10.12.x.  Sending a print job should wake up the G4 and send it to the printer.

Second.  You mentioned an Ethernet network.  That would most likely mean either a switch or a router.  You should be able to attach the printer directly to the network.  All printers on the network would be able to access the printer then.

I know you are busy but I am at a loss.

Whom do I ask to potentially solve my problem? I want to know if I can print from a newer mac OS 10.12 to an HP LaserJet 4M. Or is it junk now?

Please direct my email or send me in a direction to where someone might be able to help me.


Here Is My Question.

I have a working HP LaserJet 4M. I had it paired with my Mac G4 with the latest Gimp Print Driver from 2012-09-20 on the G4.
Connected via an ethernet network.
I can see the printer and select it from OS 10.12 - only when the G4 is on and awake. I can print from 10.12
However, The printer appears off-line when the G4 goes to sleep.
I think the printer sees the G4's Gimp Print driver so it can print.
I downloaded and installed onto the OS 10.12 the newer GutenPrint-5.2.14.pkg. This doesn’t help. 
I want to retire my old G4. Is there a way I can communicate between a mac with OS 10.12 and the HP LaserJet 4M printer?
The printer still works fine. I just don't want to trash it if I can help it.

Please apply the attached patch to CUPS to make it supporting AirPrint 
as a server. In addition, run Avahi on your Raspberry Pi. Now the

A logical first step.  I hope you release a native Linux driver for
folks who want to drive it directly from Linux, preferably in
redistributable open source form so it can be bundled with Linux
distributions.

The short answer is that CUPS is intentionally not capable of acting as 
an airprint server [1].  With some elbow grease you can get it to at 
least get recognized by an Airprint client, but the moment you step 
outside standard paper sizes (eg Letter or A4) things fall apart 
quickly.  Despite nomially being based on IPP (a standard Apple helped 
create) airprint heavily relies on proprietary custom extensions.

You can request access to the AirPrint specs from Apple, and should be 
able to hack your print server's IPP-handling code (eg in CUPS or by 
directly building your driver on top of the ippserver example) into 
being complaint with AirPrint, but I've been told that Apple places some 
tight restrictions what you can do or release using that documentation.

(AFAICT Apple seems to be most concerned about someone inadvertantly 
 combining it with an F/OSS license that includes copyleft or patent 
 grant provisions...)

I am wondering if you have heard of our recently-new photo printer, the Impressa IP60:

The IP60 is currently a Windows 10 and (almost) Mac USB printer, but we are getting some inquiries from the iPad world, and want to support AirPrint, and the option we have started with is to use a Raspberry Pi as a wireless print server.

We have developed a basic CUPS filter and drv/ppd for this printer, but there is clearly more involved in supporting AirPrint.  The basic printing is working, but we are struggling with controlling orientation and scaling.  Would you have any recommendations about how best to approach supporting iPad fully?

This is a driver issue.  It's missing the codes for all of the feed
sources; that will need to be fixed.

Dear SC-P800 Devel Team,

i bought a new P800 after my R2880 and have a problem to print Fine Art
Papers into the "Manual Sheet Guide". Following Problem:

The Option "Roll Paper" is missing in the Cups-Gutenprint Driver
Options, It has only 3 Options "Standard", "Manual Sheet Guide" and
"Manual Feed (Front)".

Standard works fine. When i select "Manual Sheet Guide" as source, the
printer expects a Roll Paper and advices me to reload Roll Paper or
cancel. So i cannot print via the Manual Sheet (Fine Art Papers).
The "Manual Feed (Front)" Option seems to work, but this is only for
Poster Board.

Is it possible that there is a bug in the driver? Or do i do any mistake
here?

I don't know how Apple mail can lose an e-mail so quickly.  This message should make it to the list somewhere in the thread.
You need to use "Select Software" you can then search for the Generic Drivers.  See attached screenshot.

Hello Roberto,
The iP1200 is not supported in gutenprint (along with some other
similar models).
You should be using the latest available gutenprint, 5.2.7 is way out of date.

The HP LaserJet M604 is not in the Gutenprint supported printers list.  The same is true for the M605 and the M606.  The HP website shows that this printer uses the PCL 6 printer language, so the printer will probably work with one of the Generic drivers.  

Please try the "Generic PCL 6/PCL XL Printer" driver if it is a monochrome printer.  If it has the color option try the "Generic PCL Color Laser" or the "Generic PCL 5c Printer" driver.  Please post back as to which driver works for you so your printer models can be added to the supported printer list.

I was just wondering why after downloading the Gutenprint.dmg and installing it, no Gutenprint
drivers are available to choose.  Please see attached screenshot. I'm trying to install the LaserJet M604. 

I chose USE and from the dropdown those are the available drivers. There is no Gutenprint
driver to select. Also, how do I find get to the list of all the
Gutenprint drivers from here. I can't remember.

Please try the newly-released Gutenprint 5.2.15-pre1, from

which should fix that problem.

Dear Devel Team,

For my FineArt Papers i did made professional ICC Printer Profiles. I
have now my gutenprint package on the ignore-list for updates to avoid
having any color changes because of a version update during a system
update. I'm on 5.3.1-2.
Is it generally required at all to do any future update? Or are any
updates to the package only to add more recent printers? How can i find
out whether the update is reasonable for my already supported printer?
Of course i like to avoid any updates to avoid any changes in color.
Or does an update not affect at all the colors?

Is it a difference in trhe backend between printing over cups-Gutenprint
and Gutenprint inside Gimp with the same Profile? Could there be color
changes if the profile was generated with the one method and used for
printing over the other?

In this case, the distribution was using the CUPS driver interface
rather than pre-generated PPD files.  The user has reported to me that
all is OK now.

i use your latest driver Gutenprint 5.2.15-pre1.

Many thnx for your effort in this, me (and i think
many other users) appreciate it.

I have a question or maybe a problem with that
driver. … or i have not found a solution yet.

I use a old Epson Stylus Pro 9600 printer, under macOS 10.14.3,
with the above descriped driver and roll-paper.

Often i have to print large PDF from Acrobat (DIN A1 and bigger),
but i can’t get the printer, print my horizontally orientated files
vertically (turned 90°).

Everything i tried fails (turning the files in acrobat in vertical orientation). 

The printer only prints horizontal.

Isn't a turning feature implemented in the driver?
… or maybe you can help me.

I don't know about the SliTaz GNU/Linux distribution
but in general the command line tool

# cups-config --datadir

displays the default CUPS data directory which is
in my case "/usr/share/cups" and therein the PPDs are in
the "model" sub-diectory and its sub-sub-diectories...

You need to find out what that directory is on SliTaz Linux.
Its value depends on how CUPS was compiled where that can
be set via the configure option '--datadir=DIR'.

When you know the directory where all PPDs are located in your
particular case, you can specify a PPD file by its full path via

# lpadmin ... -P /path/to/file.ppd

But catually you should not need to know the directory
where all PPDs are located because with

# lpinfo -m

you get the sub-path of the PPD files below that directory
and you can use only that sub-path in

# lpamdin ... -m sub-path/of/file.ppd

First of all, please update to Gutenprint 5.2.14; 5.2.8 is very old.

Since you're able to find the PPD file via the web interface, you
appear to have build Gutenprint correctly.  But in many cases
Gutenprint doesn't actually generate the PPD files; it uses what's
called the CUPS driver interface to generate them on request.

lpadmin has a '-m' option, documented as follows:

       -m model
            Sets a standard PPD file for the printer from the model directory or using one  of
            the driver interfaces.  Use the -m option with the lpinfo(8) command to get a list
            of supported models.  The model "raw" clears any existing PPD file and  the  model
            "everywhere"  queries  the  printer  referred  to by the specified IPP device-uri.
            Note: The "raw" model is deprecated and will not be supported in a future  version
            of CUPS.

You can use 'lpinfo -m' to get a llist of supported printers and the
corresponding PPD files.  Some of those might start with 'drv:///';
these are the ones that use the driver interface.  Find the one in the
list that's the one you want, and use the 'drv:///...' from the lpinfo
-m output as the printer model in the lpadmin -m command.

after a long fight I could make cups detect all printers on a slitaz OS.
I used the http://localhost:631 to install a printer. There were not many
choices, so I compiled the gutenprint 5.2.8 and everything was o.k.
The correct printer appeared in the corresponding window and the ppd-
file also in /usr/etc/cups/ppd. This is a very elegant solution. But 
sometimes
you can not use the web-interface (http://...), so you have to do with the
terminal (lpadmin...), where you have to copy the ppd-file by yourself. 
Inside this
file there is the location (/usr/share/cups/model...), where you should 
find it, but
this folder is empty, so up to now I could not find it. I thought, that 
the pro-
gram would get it from the internet, so I disconnected it. But in spite 
of that
it worked, so the files must be on the computer. Can you help me ?

This release primarily fixes some Macintosh issues, including the
uninstaller and a driver required for many dye sublimation printers
being inadvertently omitted.

Gutenprint is a suite of printer drivers for UNIX, Linux, and
Macintosh OS X systems (10.6 and above, 64-bit only) that use CUPS as
their printing system.  Gutenprint currently supports almost 3500
printers.  It also includes an enhanced Print plug-in for GIMP that
replaces the print plug-in packaged with the GIMP distribution.

Gutenprint 5.2.14 is currently available in source form; a binary
installer for OS X 10.6 and above (64-bit only) is also available at
